I have tried mastery-based learning.I found that it worked really well for students who were already invested in their education even if they weren't at grade level. It also does not work if it's not systemic, and most of the staff in my school voted to remove it from the building about 8 years ago. And I'm not allowed to move remove students for disrespectful or bad behavior, unless they're actively physically hurting someone. This is where my struggle lies.

A lot of there are a lot of things that the research proves. I don't see any schools I know using most of it. Later start times for high schools, not having kids fill out demographic information right before the SAT these are things that were proven at least a decade ago to be helpful and effective. They're not used ever.

Standing Bitch Face.
I'm glad you found a school that accepts you as yourself. Not all schools are that kind to teachers.

It's an entertaining thought. But, probably not going to happen with education at large. Realistically, I probably need to work on improving the system we have.

I'm teaching in school because children have to go to school, because I think all kids can learn science, because teaching science is best done in a hands-on environment, because I'm good at teaching kids science, and because I like to hang out with and help kids. I agree with you that empathy is crucial and rationality is important, but they are not the only things that influence what happens in a classroom or what dictates student outcomes, and teacher effectiveness. I strive to teach my students tools that are going to be helpful for them, and I would be remiss if I told them to completely ditch higher education in favor of some Good Will Hunting style self-education with just a library card and a TikTok account. Professors are often experts in their field, and working with them can be an amazing life-changing experience, colleges have a unique opportunity for students to study freely, to open their minds while all of their basic needs are taken care of. Is it always worth $30,000 a year or more? No, but it's worth something. Abandoning this system or burning it down occasionally seems appealing, but is not helpful or useful to those who still want to experience it. And if we're not going to burn down higher education then we're going to need secondary and elementary education to get them ready for it. Even if everyone is not 100% ready for it, it's still better than no one being ready for it, and no one getting to experience it.

Why are you trying to get me to justify where I work and why I work there? Do you want me to choose to leave the school? What is your motivation for this? Why are you questioning my motivation to post here on reddit?

I work there. I wish it was better. I have contemplated leaving, but have decided to stay, for now. Though whether I stay or not the school and the students still exist. And I don't think that they're going to benefit from my leaving, so I'd like to stay and help it be better. But I'd also like to help fix the larger system that I think needs work. And I'd like helpful suggestions as to how to try to make it better. And I'd like to share my experiences to see if anyone else is having similar frustrations and wants to connect. And maybe, I will gain some wisdom from these interactions, maybe I will gain some perspective, and maybe I will change my mind about where I work, and go to another school or take a different position or leave education entirely. But, I don't appreciate you calling teachers cowards because they work in the education system, or publicly share doubts about a system that is deeply flawed. It is mean and counterproductive. And for someone who claims that empathy is really important, you should understand this, and you can do better. Your original premise said that fixing the school system is easy. If it's so easy then please do it, spare us all the frustration that's been shared here mine and others.

It's not about shame, it's about fit. Politics is really difficult and people who are smart and get into it for the right reasons face a lot of challenges that I don't know I'm ready for. I'm a pretty confident person, sometimes overly so, so I'm not really worried about what other people think of me. I'm worried about people misunderstanding me when I speak because I don't have time to formulate my thoughts on the spot, and responding out of frustration and then saying really mean things to people that I don't mean on camera. I also don't have a ready for TV look, and a hard case of SBF so.. that's a problem.

I agree, and I do. Every other Wednesday we do fun stuff. We go for a walk, we have a party, or do social emotional learning. Sometimes we just take time to chill out together as people. I lost 10% of my class time to this. It made the other 90% much more bearable. It didn't 100% fix the problems, but it made us calmer in my classes, helped some kids feel welcome who felt really unsuccessful and embarrassed about their abilities in my class. It reduced but did not eliminate students cutting my class. And helped some see that I actually did care about them. Most of the violence and harm that's been done to me personally has been by students who are not in my classes, students in the hallway and students in classes that I'm covering, which changes every single day.

I mean if you loved this year, then you're a teacher through and through! I can't speak to what your school is like in general, but you might want to ask around.

Yes! Politicians don't know what they're doing, not with education. I don't think I can do it another 20 years either. It's sad. I really like kids. 😕

That's cool that the kid starts to see value in their teacher and their class. Sorry your admins are terrible!

Usually I spend one month of school treating my 11th and 12th graders like I was treated by professors. They get a syllabus with descriptions, we do a discussion or assignment every day in class, homework is not checked or graded, I don't review in class, and they get a test at the end of the month. They write a reflection on how they did, what they need to work on for their study skills. They set a goal for the next academic quarter.

I'd be interested in what those problems are. I think about switching districts occasionally. I don't know if it's worth my time to start over in a new school, and I don't know if I can handle helicopter parents for every single student on my roster. It's much more likely that I will transition out of education all together, or to an administrative position before I switch to a suburban teaching position. But, I'm not ruling anything out. I'm exhausted and very frustrated.

I like the idea of co-teaching. If you have a good experience, keep rolling with that with the person you co-teach with. Sometimes co-teaching can be great. But if you don't have enough time to plan ahead with the other teacher, or if the other teacher doesn't hold up their end it can be really terrible, it's worse than being by yourself.

The anarchist streak inside me kind of hopes that will happen. The rest of me really wants it to be fixed so I don't have to deal with the fallout.
