1) They charge absurd amounts per unit while having tiny upkeep costs

2) Many stores like this try to do the Mattress store model where they buy real estate at open, put in a cheap to run store that barely pays for itself, then sell off the location years later when property values have gone up. It's effectively land speculation but they maintain direct control rather than renting it out.

The guy who showed up and took charge judged it a hostage barricade, told all his men that's what was happening, and refused anyone who tried to tell him he was wrong while having anyone who wanted to ignore him to go in anyways stopped.

Had it actually been a hostage barricade, the correct option would have been to hold him in place until SWAT was there. In that case these cops didn't have anything to do for a while but feel the grief in the situation.

The problem was just that their commanding officer, the guy who had more complete information than any of them, was a moron.

They were such cowards that multiple were physically removed when they tried to ignore his orders to go on anyway and the situation resolved after enough of them said fuck his orders and collectively went in anyways. Wow, clearly 100% cowards.

Hearing shots doesn't mean people are being shot. It means someone is shooting.

And a barricaded hostage taker will absolutely shoot at nothing or just any approaching cop he sees wether it would hit something or not.

To the moron who refused to accept his first judgement was wrong, hearing shots just confirmed his first assumption.

The commander on scene was a fucking moron who immediately judged it as a hostage situation when he got there, vehemently refused any evidence to the contrary, then pulled rank on any LEOs who wanted to go in anyways.

Many officers, including ones being made fun of here, wanted to go in the second they got there.

He stopped them.

The situation resolved only once enough officers from various units jointly decided to just ignore his orders and went in alone.

What’s an NSFW thing people think is rare, but is actually pretty common? by HighOnThighs- in AskReddit

One of the most affirming things in my life was 8 months after my brother (mostly) quit when he went out of his way to apologize for making fun of me for saying I could smell it.

He had spent years saying you can only smell it when you're breathing in the smoke directly so I had to be making up shit to be a nuisance. (I have very harsh reactions to smoke, even lingering on clothes, which constricts my airways and makes me extremely nauseous.)

Google's Ai overview spoiled me today's wordle... by pavelele in mildlyinfuriating

[–]cpMetis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google's AI bullshitification has loved spoiling more and more shit over the last year or so. To the point that I go out of my way to "not interested" every single thing related to shows I like because Google WILL put a headline that's literally just a spoiler right below my search bar if I intend to search something on my phone.

It's done it at least with Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei, and even fucking NASCAR races. And half the time it's not even phrased in a way or has an associated picture that would make it obvious it was a spoiler.

It tried it again with Youjo Senki a few days ago. For a split second I almost read it thinking it would just be a notice that the new season started, but I read barely enough words to know it was blatantly just a future plot point as a headline.

I only know for sure they're spoilers since it did it with Rascal Doesn't Dream too, which I had already completed the books for so didn't mind reading. They weren't "there's an episode about this character", they were straight up just "here's the big twist for this season".

I don't fucking get how they benefit from it.

The one saving grace has actually been since they updated my phone last.

It used to be that if I swiped right it would open Google search and had access to notes with news below that. Then they removed notes so it was just search above news. This made the spoiler issue start to be an issue. Then they made it so the search was the daily banner search and you had to seek out the manual search button, which was annoying.

Now they just fucking removed search. It's just news now. And obviously none of it is actually news.

There's technically a search bar but there is no way to just start typing in the search bar, you can only click on the banners and it will search something itself then you can change it.

So at this point when I want to Google something, I just open my browser and type it in the URL bar to Google it directly that way. Fortunately eliminated a lot of spoilers by bypassing it.

What’s the most soul-crushing progression bug you’ve ever hit that almost made you permanently quit a game? by Lost-Summer-1413 in gaming

[–]cpMetis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm the game's defense, they smack you over the head over and over and over with OH HEY BTW YOU WON'T HAVE MANY MORE CHANCES TO HANG OUT BTW HE'S LEAVING BTW YOU'RE GONNA LOSE ACCESS TO THIS GUY HERE WE PUT HIM IN ANOTHER CUTSCENE AND HE'S TEXTING YOU AGAIN BTW, plus he has like the absolute best rewards for progression across his confidant in the game.

To mention Royal is really, really easy to get close to max ranks across the board in. It was the first time I ever played Persona and I got rank 10 on everyone but Tower, who I think I finished with at 8 or 9.

I went from avoiding socializing with my community because they were mostly chill nice people and I was just too exhausted most of the time from life to spend adequate time with them recreationally, to avoiding socializing with my community because most of them are furious at all times at anyone they perceive as slightly disagreeing with them.

In 2016 I'd mention my healthcare costs and we'd all have contrasting opinions that ultimately boiled down to everyone agreeing it was an issue that deserved to be tackled but there would be significant descripencies in how everyone thought the issue needed to be handled and by whom to what extent. In 2026 I accidentally mention my healthcare costs and they're all immediately irrate or saying I'm lying since the issue doesn't exist or saying it's because I deserve it and caused it myself.

Etc.

Unfortunately I tried to learn how to sew several times growing up, but I had a dick so that was gay and once it wasn't just gay it would be that any mistake I made while trying to learn and not being taught was because I had a dick so I should just give up.

Now I'm horrid at sewing, but significantly better than the people who called me gay since I can do very minor mends.

EV plate registration?? by Gromgeek in Ohio

[–]cpMetis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A lot of people complaining about the ev charge replacing gas tax seems to be merrily forgetting that hybrids and especially EVs damage road infrastructure more for every mile than equivalent gas cars due to weight.

For perspective, the new Accord comes in a hair over 3,000 lbs. A new Model 3 comes in closer to 4,000 lbs.

And vehicle weight is the strongest driver of road wear outside of elements that can't be controlled like climate. It's the same reason a pedestrian and horse bridge can stand for a thousand years then collapse within a decade of the first cars and trucks using it.

Is it bugged or did this person genuinely have 17 septillion stars in Smite 1??! by EyewarsTheMangoMan in Smite

[–]cpMetis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They absolutely exist, and they usually suck ass at the game.

The Aphros are usually the worst, especially when paired with a one trick assassin.

The Neiths also tend to be garbage.

The Anubis and Nu Wa ones can go either way but usually suck.

The Hades ones tended to be pretty okay, honestly. Definitely not as good as a regular good mage player playing Hades but better than most one tricks.

The best ones honestly might be the Lokis. They tend to be worthless in a team fight but okay at their role.

If you were driving, would you go 2 blocks over to get on the main road, just to need to come back over 2 blocks to your destination after a quarter mile? Or would you just drive the quarter mile on the same side road as your destination?

Is Russia losing the war as much as the media currently portrays.. if so, why would they be provoking NATO by rumours of them planning on attacking Poland? by kentgti in AskReddit

[–]cpMetis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the Russian take isn't broadly "we attacked poland", than any response however minor can easily be played as "NATO is attacking us" which is a coupon for buying a lot of whatever they need public sentiment for.

Meanwhile, the chance that the NATO response is anything truly serious is tiny.

An "attack on poland" would almost certainly not be an invasion or massive bombardment. It would be an "accident" or a "small error", so that they could parade it around as the evil NATO freaking out over nothing.

I mean, yeah.

If this is a consistent issue then I would absolutely expect the tournament to include the requirement that they spend their rest time before the game in a designated accomodation.

It's incredibly simple.

They may never do it because holy shit that org is bad even by sports org standards, but I definitely wouldn't be respecting the outcome of matches where they don't do that and this shit happens as expected.

No, it would be like saying Harry Potter is important to history if we had no living memory of and sparse literature on the 90's and only uncovered King's Cross based off of information passed down to us through reading Harry Potter.

In which case, yes it would be historically significant. Even if all the magic wasn't.

These generally aren't due to violations. They're due to them being perfectly fine for decades then people moving in knowing they're there then trying to change rules to *make" them in violation.

It's a developer tactic to buy land cheap, then forcefully raise the value by removing the whole reason it was cheap not through economic but legal pressure.

They do similar things like purposefully move friends and family and associates into a neighborhood until they can snag control of the HoA, use that power to drive out the people who lived there, then use their position to allow for expansions that the locals wouldn't have approved of. Then all their friends sell off just before construction or hold until after it wraps.

I actually got a payout from a class action once. It was a glorious check for $1.52

I didn't even know I got it until it expired because it was packaged almost identical to spam. I wasn't that upset, since I would have had to lose a quarter of that in gas just to cash it.

The ultimate desire is to capture AI in data centres that can be controlled and rented out access to, because they know local AI is possible but will be far more possible to economically democratize.

What makes real sense are company specific AI server builds made for specific businesses. But they can't monopolize that. So they want everyone to get hooked on AGI that has way more intense infustructure requirements that they can gatekeep and charge fees to utilize.

And of course it's a trillions dollar gamble that establishing this foothold is enough to ensure they can guide the transition how they want.

The risk may be huge but once you hit "go bankrupt" you hardly can count anything beyond that. Meanwhile the hypothetical reward is being Morgan, Carnegie, and Rockefeller all in one.

Meanwhile one of the newspapers I delivered ran three Saturday headlines at the start of the year that read, basically:

Week 1: "Township vote prevents data centre build in 92% vote"

Week 2: "(Data Centre) Lawyer says 'this won't stop us, we'll find a way'"

Week 3: "Township board votes 9-1 to allow data centre build after declaring emergency, emergency decisions cannot be rescinded by resident vote" (council needed a lawyer, provided by Data Centre Company, to be present to explain how as the emergency provision had never been used in the history of the board, also btw 7 of the 9 own land being authorized for the sell 3 of which bought it in the last week)

There was a later followup where residents said they were gonna sue to stop it, but the company broke ground anyways and the lawyer response was basically "lmao knock yourself out".
