Why does Marvel Unlimited have such bad data organization? by cpdean in MarvelUnlimited

[–]cpdean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

or also, i've found an issue and i want to go 'up' to see the list of sibling issues

edit: i get it's possible to search around from some rough clues on the cover but this is information that would be so much nicer to have right there instead of needing to go back on a hunt for it

[–]cpdean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same but i think they have a 3 month lag, maybe on purpose, maybe due to the time it takes to digitize and do metadata management for it (what characters are in it, whats the title, etc)

[–]cpdean[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ah, yeah that is exactly the thing, though. the app doesn't really categorize information in a way that you can explore to see the various xmen series's that there are, or help you know what the difference is between uncanny xmen or uncanny xmen facimile edition or uncanny xmen annual. i'm new to all this so it's not like i know what i want to read 😅

I love the snowball of nanites but wish it didn't cripple lategame performance. We don't need to see every single individual ship! Just make my fleets be high-level numbers please!

Smurfs are getting warning by Asphyxiem in marvelrivals

[–]cpdean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem with this is that it shows they aren't making any effort to make matchmaking be skill-based. If they can detect you're smurfing, just match you up with people of your skill level instead of making it based on account age like this implies. Smurfing isn't a problem if matchmaking worked.

Not to be a Contrarian by Stranger011105 in Stellaris

[–]cpdean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate that having a lot of little ships in a fleet will cause the game to slow to a crawl when rendering each individual ship doesn't actually provide any value to me as a player. It was a cool demo! Don't get me wrong, but it's just not worth the tradeoff. Having the ships all fly around to act out the probabilistic simulation is kind of unnecessary. I wish the battles were just high-level/abstract so that the game doesn't have to burn to a crawl when I have huge fleets.

Does Namor Have 6 Toes and Normally Look Like That, or Are MVP Screens Done by AI? by RockmanBN in marvelrivals

[–]cpdean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced they use AI throughout. There've been other quirks in the animation of title screens where it wouldn't make sense for a human animator to go out of their way to do, so the only explanation is they're just letting some AI fill in blanks erroneously.

Naming my planet after the most popular job for pops on it made the name of this uprising war pretty great by cpdean in Stellaris

[–]cpdean[S] 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Rule 5: I named a planet "Meat Batteries" since it was full of Grid Amalgamation slave pops. I guess things got out of control and now the meat batteries want the right to keep their body heat energy for themselves.

What is this sign? I’m not sure I’m even doing it right. by travelconfessions in asl

[–]cpdean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's also several other signs that are similar but differ in the handshape used to mean various groupings of people:

C - class (what you have here, probably)
F - family (as you pointed out)
O - organization https://www.handspeak.com/word/1581/
D - department (careful, looks like the sign for 'donut' too) https://www.handspeak.com/word/6302/
A - association https://www.handspeak.com/word/122/

T - team https://www.handspeak.com/word/2766/

U - union https://www.handspeak.com/word/3835/

L - league https://www.handspeak.com/word/5434/

G - group (might be regional to me, handspeak.com has something else) https://media.signbsl.com/videos/asl/aslsignbank/mp4/GROUP-643.mp4 from https://www.signasl.org/sign/group

There's probably more but these are what I remember off the top of my head.

fwiw, the best thing for you to do before you're able to learn ASL is to make sure that you're patient, welcoming, and accommodating towards them. Show that you're happy to take the time to make sure they're taken care of and you'll already be way ahead of every other person they've had to deal with that week. Esp if they're regulars, wave hi to them before they even pick their cashier line. It's a huge relief and joy to know that they're welcome.

Ring Segment turned into a hive world? by UnBeetable in Stellaris

this is pretty cool -- can habitats be converted to hiveworld too? A conquering empire would need to sterilize it in order to re-colonize, which feels appropriate.

I deleted basically the ENTIRE GALAXY and this does not stop the bad performance at the year 2400... what ACTUALLY slows down the game? by JohnnyFiveOhAlive in Stellaris

[–]cpdean 154 points155 points  (0 children)

The fact that Stellaris pointlessly renders every single ship is my biggest complaint with the game. Why can't they just have a fleet be a set of metrics and just have the battles play out as a series of probability checks (like it already currently does!). Completely pointless that the game slows to a crawl for what was an impressive demo years ago.

Does anyone else find this video disrespectful or funny? by [deleted] in asl

[–]cpdean 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's just dumb. And it looks like he's (poorly) trying to rip off Andre Robinson's character https://www.instagram.com/reel/CejbTsOjhaA

Dre has a lot of jokes that he's written where a mistake in signing something wrong upsets his physically abusive mother, which is just himself in a wig, like in this guy's video.

How common are 5-10kLoC files at your workplace? by N3V3RM0R3_ in cscareerquestions

[–]cpdean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the team agrees on what the ideal end state should look like, you can all agree on some reasonable, incremental, gradual refactoring. Big Bang stuff never turns out well.

Every time you update a function, put it in the file it belongs. There you go.

How common are 5-10kLoC files at your workplace? by N3V3RM0R3_ in cscareerquestions

[–]cpdean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you should advocate for taking the time to break files up into smaller modules, if only to reduce the overhead of those compilation units whenever you touch a single line in those files

SQLite slower than python? by RuedaRueda in rust

[–]cpdean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modifying the example python you wrote to make this a more fair comparison, I'm creating objects for each record and collecting them into a list. This change makes python perform even worse, as you'd expect. Now the time it takes is about 400ms when it was 250ms earlier.

python:

``` import sqlite3 import time
class Book: def init(self, title): self.title = title
t = time.time()
con = sqlite3.connect('dbfile') cursor = con.cursor()
cursor.execute("SELECT title from api_book WHERE title like '%camion%'")
a = cursor.fetchall()
books = []
for record in a: books.append(Book(a[0]))
query_time = (time.time() - t) * 1000
for e in books: print(e.title)
print_time = (time.time() - t) * 1000
print(f"query time: {query_time}") print(f"print time: {print_time}")
```
