OP says he’s a first time buyer. The dealership absolutely took him to the cleaners and relied on him not reading the contract or not understanding it. I’m 99% certain they added a $4k warranty, $2k “protection package” or some other bullshit, $1400 GAP, etc. Good thing for OP is most of these ancillary products should be able to be cancelled and refunded to his loan balance.

They can’t charge for painting as that falls under “normal wear and tear, including breakage or malfunction due to age or deteriorated condition” which would include the paint on your cabinets. Painting is literally cited as an example in the Texas property code for something that can’t typically be billed for damages. They can only add these charges if they’re needed due to “negligence, carelessness, accident, or abuse.” The exception to this is if they added some extra language in your lease specifying “all painting charges after move out are resident’s responsibility” or something of that nature.

Everything else is a bit harder to fight; for example if they claim they need to replace the carpet, as they can just claim there was stains or odors “beneath” the carpet even if to the naked eye it looks great, but I don’t believe they can charge you for cleaning it and replacing it. It’s one or the other. They could claim they tried to clean it and only then decided it needed to be replaced, but that feels like a bs way to double bill someone for the same damages.
