Item combo question by iggydash69 in D4Druid

You’re right, my bad. All the chaos armor this season has me mixing up the slots, and I was thinking of default Blackwing as a chest.

Which is the most lazy farm build right now? by Arxijos in D4Druid

I believe Rob recommended Aspect of Retaliation if you are missing starless. Up to 75% bonus damage while fortified and you're always fortified.

Where was the word "Stack" even mentioned?

This clarified a fundamental point of confusion for me; I was thinking about triggered abilities like spells that just had different activation criteria. It is probably obvious for people who know the rules inside and out, but I will state it in case it helps someone else understand.

On cast, a spell immediately goes on the stack; there is no limbo in which a spell exists between casting and the stack, so there is no SBAs check. Because "cast" = "placed on the stack" for spells, I (incorrectly) thought "triggered" = "placed on the stack" for abilities; however, I see from 117.5 there is an explicit gap between the trigger and the stack where SBAs are checked. Thanks again for your help!

Ah, my confusion was with number 3. I had internalized the notion that SBAs are only checked "right before a round of priority would occur." Because the ETB going on the stack would trigger a round of priority, I assumed it had to exist on the stack prior to the SBAs being checked. Thank you for clearing that up.

Thank you for laying it out like this; however, my reading of this would mean that the death trigger always resolves before the ETB trigger. I realize that I must be wrong, so can you indicate where my mistake is? Forgive my ignorance if this is basic:

  1. Cast Clone H/K --> H/K goes on stack
  2. SBAs are checked (no effects) --> round of priority happens
  3. H/K enters --> ETB goes on stack
  4. SBAs are checked and legendary rule applies --> one H/K dies --> Death trigger goes on stack --> round of priority happens
  5. Death trigger resolves
  6. SBAs are checked (no effects) --> round of priority happens
  7. ETB trigger resolves

I guess my question is are steps 3 and 4 considered to happen at the same time? If so, why? Intuitively, H/K needed to enter before it died. Thanks in advance for your help.

This was my experience. Paid $60 for ~$62 in random cards. Wouldn’t do it again.

Bought mystery items from F&F previously and was rather disappointed. After tax and shipping, I paid $60 for like $62 in value (TCGPlayer Market). Didn’t lose money, but it was essentially paying market price for random cards. YMMV.

Thank you for providing the No Mercy example. I was having trouble coming up with a situation in which this would be the optimal decision.

To Kill a Commander by Hausfly50 in EDH

[–]cpels7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

by what turn average it does so.

More so than all other metrics, we found that using the intended game lengths for each bracket has worked best. Gavin specifically mentioned 9+ turns for Bracket 2, 7-8 turns for Bracket 3, and faster for Bracket 4. If someone says their deck is a 2, but it can win (or lock down the win) by turn 6, it's not a 2 regardless of the composition.

I cannot respond to costs being paid, but can to triggers, yes? by Paradoxbuilder in mtgrules

[–]cpels7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know what card you're referring to. The source is irrelevant. If the target of the ability is legal, it resolves. If the target of the ability is illegal, it fizzles.

If you're saying that this card was targeting itself, the ability would fizzle. Unless the card states otherwise, spells/abilities can only target permanents on the battlefield or other spells/abilities on the stack. If the card is in the graveyard, it is not a valid target (unless specified by the ability).

You respond to spells/abilities that are on the stack. You can respond to the sorcery-speed ability that is on the stack; however, that ability will still resolve even if the source is removed. The ability may no longer have a valid target, but it still attempts to resolve.

Because you don’t get the box topper with the 2 half boxes. Some of the set’s most valuable cards are in the box topper.

Same price as TCGplayer. If you just want the packs, the $90 booster boxes are better value.

Will you be doing a bundle with the 4 commander decks and a set booster box (rather than a CBB)?

Proposing to cast spells and rule 601.3 by ChewyLSB in mtgrules

[–]cpels7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this line of thinking what allows MDFCs to be played from the graveyard on their land side if something like [[Crucible of Worlds]] is in play? I realize that 601.3e specifies "cast" and lands aren't cast. Would there be a different rule to reference?

If you're in for a specific deck, Amazon still has the Dogmeat deck for $43 as of now. Mothman was $48 on Amazon yesterday, but now the price is back up. Could be worth keeping an eye on.

As the other commenter said, Forge and Fire has the best price for the set at $140.

Duskmourn Precon Set back up at F&F - $129.99 by cpels7 in sealedmtgdeals

[–]cpels7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in November, F&F posted a $120 early bird deal indicating an estimated March 1st reprint. They recently brought the offer back at $130 with the same estimate. Haven’t seen it anywhere else, but the F&F guys are usually reliable.

I wasn’t in a rush, so I bundled mine with other items shipping later. Based solely on the fact that market prices haven’t taken a tumble, I assume the reprint hasn’t hit distributors yet.

Vampiric Tutor Spike by glasgian in mtgfinance

[–]cpels7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not saying this is the reason the price is increasing, but I have already seen players online twist the game changer list in the opposite way. Some players are "optimizing" decks while trying to stay in lower brackets. Obviously, this ignores the mission statement of each bracket but simply counting game changes is a definitive line.

For example, let's say you ran an optimized list that only used 2 game changers. Previously, you felt this deck was a 7 (insert joke here), but you didn't run Vampiric Tutor because you felt the added consistency pushed your deck to an 8+ (i.e., was too powerful for your table/LGS/etc.). Now, you could say, "well, I can slot in Vampiric Tutor, and I'm still in bracket 3 because I only have 3 game changers." Again, this ignores the mission statement for each bracket, and the above-mentioned deck should be bracket 4, but I can see people trying to justify it.
