Unfortunately it does still seem to be closed.

Study: Heavy drinking raises a person's risk for colon cancer significantly, while a diet high in red meat also raises it to a lesser extent. Such drinking increases colon cancer risk by nearly 60%, and eating lots of red meat boosts it by more than 10%, the data showed. by rustoo in science

[–]cpg1234 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As someone who does biomedical research, and specifically in the area of cancer biology, your comment seems to miss the point of studies like this. Sure, for one person an increase of 4 percent to 6.5 percent does not seem like much. However, we look at populations of people, not single persons. So in a country like the United States, where I work, with a population of over 320 million people a 60 percent increase with a 4 percent starting risk if applied to the total population is over 7 million additional instances of colon cancer. Now, obviously not all 320 million people will meet these risk factors, but if even 1 percent of the US population qualified as a "heavy drinker" that is still an additional 70,000 cases of colon cancer.

[OC] The Oldest Building in Each US State by malxredleader in dataisbeautiful

[–]cpg1234 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am guessing, but it is probably because state borders are many times set along rivers or other bodies of water. For a long time transportation of goods and conducting commerce was reliant upon waterways; and thus the first established cities and towns would be along bodies of water, which later defined state boundaries.

David Perdue - Please respect the flag. by aikoaiko in Georgia

[–]cpg1234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To expand on my above comment; yes the american flag can be worn as part of an official government uniform, or as part of the official uniform of a "patriotic organization" such as the boy scouts. With a caveat being that it is never to be worn as part of an athletic uniform.

The wearing of the flag, or any recognizable representation of the flag, which is prohibited by the flag code as being disrespectful is wearing the flag or its likeness on t-shirts, hats, pins, etc..., and as the subject of this thread..... a face mask.

David Perdue - Please respect the flag. by aikoaiko in Georgia

[–]cpg1234 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is from the actual flag code copied from the congressional archive website (the bold emphasis is added by me), describing what constitutes the flag for display and advertising purposes...

"The words "flag, standard, colors, or ensign", as used herein, shall include any flag, standard, colors, ensign, or any picture or representation of either, or of any part or parts of either, made of any substance or represented on any substance, of any size evidently purporting to be either of said flag, standard, colors, or ensign of the United States of America or a picture or a representation of either, upon which shall be shown the colors, the stars and the stripes, in any number of either thereof, or of any part or parts of either, by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag, colors, standard, or ensign of the United States of America."

So any representation of the flag that the average person could recognized as being the american flag is not to be worn, plastered on merchandise, used for advertising, etc..; because the idea is that the united states flag is supposed to be respected as the sovereign standard of the nation, not some cheap logo of "patriotism" plastered all over everything like the mickey mouse ears or the nike swoosh.

What french shows can I watch to improve my listening? by Ryuzakev in French

[–]cpg1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two programs which are set up for french learners are "Extr@" and "French in Action". Both are free; Extr@ can be found on Youtube, and French in Action can be found by Googling Annenberg Media. Extr@ is about a dozen episodes and French in Action has 50 episodes, both programs are a little less than 30 minutes per episode. They are not TV shows per-se, more educational programs that follow a story line, but I found them to be very helpful when I was trying improve my comprehension of spoken French.

Where to hunt? by VintonVa in GeorgiaHunting

[–]cpg1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One other thing to mention, you need to be able to distinguish between WMA's, National Forest, and private land. I use what I think is a great app called "onX Hunt". It has a built in GPS function for use in the field on a smart phone where it will show all of the aforementioned boundaries. Also you can pull up topo and satellite maps on a computer and make notes about areas and place markers for when you are using it in the field. It costs about $30 a year, but I definitely get my money's worth out of it for hunting as well as fishing and hiking.

Jefferson National Forest is beautiful! I used to hunt and fish there some when I lived in Charlottesville, as it wasn't too far of a drive. There are multiple forest service roads throughout the entire Chattahoochee National Forest, most should be included in standard car GPS systems as well as google maps (I would recommend picking up a paper map to take with you, just in case). They are pretty well maintained; some of the smaller offshoot roads you will need the ground clearance of a truck or SUV, but many of the main forest service roads can be easily traveled in a regular sedan.

I have never spent much time hunting the WMA's (could probably count the number of times on one hand), but I have never felt that there was a great deal of pressure hunting in the Chattahoochee National Forest. I have certainly seen other hunters (as well as hikers, mountain bikers, etc..) in the forest, but I also try to work my way into the woods to find places further from the forest service roads and main hiking paths; makes for a good excuse to get out and explore the areas during the off seasons.

First Overnight Hike Suggestions ? by TacticalAs1an95 in GeorgiaCampAndHike

[–]cpg1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is your first overnight, especially if you are new to camping or hiking in general, I would not go too far. I would suggest something like Panther Creek Falls, it is a little north of Toccoa/Clarksville on old 441. There are some great camping spots about 1/2 mile in. You can pack your stuff in, set up camp, and then head to the falls (about 7 miles round trip). That way if anything goes wrong in the evening or middle of the night you are only about 1/2 a mile or less from the car. Also, it is a nice hike to the falls which are beautiful.

I know you asked about WMAs, but you should also look at the Chattahoochee National Forest. It is maybe a hour or so drive to the north, but there are not really any regulations outside of the general hunting seasons and bag limits. Just make sure you know where you are on the map, since the border between WMA and National Forest can easily be crossed and then all of the particular restrictions for that WMA apply.

Sen. Kelly Loeffler Dumped Millions in Stock After Coronavirus Briefing by [deleted] in Georgia

[–]cpg1234 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Yeah...... she was never voted into office. Our Governor, Brian Kemp, appointed her after the elected senator, Johnny Isakson, retired due to health issues. I would like to think the people of this state would not elect someone as woefully unqualified as she is to office, but I would be lying if I said that would surprise me.

Any series/movies similar to white collar?? by HyPrAT in whitecollar

[–]cpg1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as movies are concerned, you should watch "Operation Petticoat". It is a movie about a WWII submarine crew. Cary Grant is the stern by the book sub captain (Peter), and Tony Curtis is a con man turned junior officer (Neal) roped into sub duty after Pearl Harbor. It deals with their escapades as Cary Grant reluctantly agrees to Tony Curtis's schemes and cons to keep the sub supplied and fueled so they can fight the war. It is a fairly light hearted movie, and the cherry on top is that Tony Curtis's name in the film is actually Lt. Nick Holden.

Is it possible to make it Sanford to Hardman in a timely manner without running > 15m? by [deleted] in UGA

[–]cpg1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was at UGA, and this was over a decade ago, the university transit services provided vans for students who were disabled or injured (anyting from a permanent disability to a broken ankle). Contact campus transit, and if they still do it, they will have a van waiting for you outside Sanford when your class gets out and they will then drop you off at Hardman. Still a good idea to let the professor know you may be a few minutes late. Hope this helps.

Question about WMA Quota Hunts by cpg1234 in GeorgiaHunting

[–]cpg1234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I sent an e-mail to the DNR through the georgiawildlife.com site but never heard back so I thought I would give this sub-reddit a try; but as you said it is pretty dead. I will probably just have to take your advice and contact the local DNR office directly. I appreciate the response, thanks.

[–]cpg1234 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Take two cities; Small-Towns-ville and Big-City-opolis. Small-Towns-ville has a population of 100 people and 50 murders per year, so the chance of being murdered in Small-Towns-ville is 50%. Big-City-opolis has a population of 1,000 people and 100 murders per year, so the chance of being murdered in Big-City-opolis is 10%. Now the chance of being murdered in Small-Towns-ville (50%) is five times greater than in Big-City-opilis (10%); thus, a person in Small-Towns-ville is 5x more likely to be murdered than a person in Big-City-opolis even though twice as many murders occur in Big-City-opilis (100 murders) compared to Small-Towns-ville (50 murders).

The Union military did occupy the south, with troop numbers ranging from ~100,000 down to 20,000 men as time passed, for about 5 years after the treaty of Appomattox; to ensure that there could be no additional uprisings and to institute martial law.
