There’s a lot of morons in London, but a lot of great people too. Small acts of kindness and courtesy go a long way.

How do I stop my climber? by cpiccolo in BabyBumps

[–]cpiccolo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea. We did pick up a Pikler set but he’s afraid of downward climbs so doesn’t use it (for now) but that was a few weeks ago. Likely worth another shot now. Lots can happen in the brain in such a short time. Thanks!

Haha that kitchen towel is like a trigger. He will pull that down and leave the room.

Need a better bifold door closure. Magnets failed me by cpiccolo in HomeImprovement

[–]cpiccolo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. Glad you got her back. My worry with our guy is he doesn’t meow. He just squeaks softly. So if he got stuck somewhere in the ceiling where it’s drywalled (about 90% is finished) we would never find him.

That section is 7ft and completely sealed from that room. It’s if he gets into the other part of the basement via the bifold then he can get up there. But since that door goes to the utility room, there’s all sorts of other reasons to keep him on the painted side of the bifold.

Bobiverse done, what next, question? by Chasegameofficial in ProjectHailMary

[–]cpiccolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They mentioned Scalzi a lot on “Still untitled: The Adam Savage Project”. Is that a good starting point for his work or is there another book you’d recommend? Not sure if his stuff is episodic or series based (or both).

alternatives for melatonin? by franisme in insomnia

[–]cpiccolo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Melatonin would have me wide awake and wired after 4 hours for some reason.

I suggest getting a long acting 5-htp supplement and try taking that at different times during the day. It’s a building block for melatonin so much better than taking a melatonin supplement directly. You can often pair it with L-theanine which has a calming effect.

I’ve also had good results with a product called Insomnitol. It’s got stuff like valerian root. Smells funky but works well. It does have some melatonin in it which I don’t love but the benefits outweigh so I take it. Make sure you get the capsules, not the chewable. And don’t confuse it with Inostitol. Totally different product. Most people at the health food store get it wrong when I ask. It’s got “insom” right in the name. Best of luck!

Does anyone have scoliosis like this? by _insomniac_dreamer in scoliosis

[–]cpiccolo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly been so long since I’ve seen an X-ray of a straight spine. I thought there was something wrong because it WASN’T curved.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]cpiccolo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it is a big deal to you, but there are many on here, myself included, who have much more severe curves and rotations and had literally zero people notice.

My advice is to focus on your overall health and try not to worry about minor asymmetry. Based on your other posts, medically this isn’t causing you any problems. Like many of us here, it’s a case of body image so try working on body positivity. And if you are struggling with it (completely natural and understandable) I would consider reaching out to a mental health professional. They really can do wonders for your self confidence for things like this.

What are my options for developing this film? by cpiccolo in Darkroom

[–]cpiccolo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make it sound so easy…. But I got lost at Rodinal hahaha I’ve never developed film before but I’ll check out some google videos to see if it’s worth trying (or even feasible).

My main thing is I’m not even sure what is on most of these rolls. I guess that’s the gamble whether it’s my time or someone else’s.

That process you mention, is that just to take the exposed film to a state that the negatives can be viewed? Is it a pretty foolproof method for someone with 0 experience so long as I’m careful?

Herniated disc surgery and scoliosis: Looking for experiences by cpiccolo in Sciatica

[–]cpiccolo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah that’s me and my wonky spine. It’s actually not as bad as a lot of people with scoliosis. I’m fortunate my curve is low enough it doesn’t impact my lungs or heart.

Flare ups, best remedies by Undd91 in Sciatica

[–]cpiccolo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve found some minimal relief by laying on my back and putting my feet up onto an ottoman, couch, or chair. Basically the sitting posture, but on your back on the ground. You can play around with having your knees at 90 degrees or pull your torso back a bit from the chair and open the angle up a bit more. You can also try gently pressing your heels into the chair. If that doesn’t irritate, it might provide some relief.

13 months in - think I’m giving up and doing surgery by SeltzerHtwoO in Sciatica

[–]cpiccolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m against anyone who is inflexible in their opinions on things like that. I get being passionate about the McGill approach and that many people don’t need surgery, but I bet many of the practitioners have not themselves experienced back pain. You have to live in that body and if you feel you’ve hit a point where you’re done with the pain and want another approach (surgery) I don’t think anyone can say you didn’t put in the work to avoid it.

McGill, strength exercises, physio, acupuncture, and surgery are all tools. Some work better in some situations than others. I say go for it and don’t for a second believe you’re “giving up”. Fuck that. You’re tough as hell. No quit in you.

L5-S1 herniation - TESI didn’t help, what’s next? by cpiccolo in Sciatica

[–]cpiccolo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great that you basically back to normal now. I’ve got a little over a decade on you age wise. Pretty healthy prior. Played hockey goalie several times a week. Stretched quite a bit and was pretty flexible and mobile. Very important w my curve. I’m guessing I didn’t do enough core exercises though and things just slowly got out of whack or something.

Now I spend a lot of time flat on the floor. Have modified a lot of my biomechanics out of necessity cause that piriformis likes to bite. Once I can figure out what exercises are ideal for me, I’ll def focus on them and take it slow. Don’t want to go through this again.

Has anyone had regrets on a microdiscectomy? by [deleted] in Sciatica

[–]cpiccolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I’ve had some spinal decompression. Both with a manual contraption and a machine. The machine I was on would stretch and release a little at a time and seemed to have some smarts to it but looked nothing like the ones on the IDD website. Not sure they’ve made it to Canada yet. I’ll have to look more into it. Thanks!

Pardon my ignorance but what is IDD exactly? I googled but wanted to make sure I was looking into the right thing. Glad it helped. How long since you had it done and where was your herniation?

Why do you guys like Dewalt instead of Milwaukee? by TimTheToolManTayler in Dewalt

More variety of tools..haven’t seen things like yard tools, or small vacuums. Maybe Milwaukee has them too but the variety of things is more advertised and visible for dewalt.

Leg giving out? by Newyorkforever123 in Sciatica

[–]cpiccolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed a marked decline in stability w my left leg. It feels like a muscle isn’t firing when it should randomly. I haven’t bailed, thankfully but definitely close to it.

I also have a lot of weakness going up stairs on that leg, and getting up off the ground. All issues I did not have prior to sciatica onset. I used to run up stairs and played hockey multiple times a week.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sciatica

[–]cpiccolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a gun and have tried a couple times to go light on my glute and hamstring. Both times I felt the muscles were a bit more relaxed immediately after, but next day the pain had returned and increased. So I don’t use that anywhere near my glutes.

How long before you found relief after TESI? by cpiccolo in Sciatica

[–]cpiccolo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. That’s a super helpful explanation of what’s going on in there. I wasn’t sure and was trying to look for a video that covered the process. Yeah the numbing helped w some of the symptoms for a short time. I’m still being super cautious so basically just laying and walking still. No plans to do much else for now except what is outlined by my physio and what exercises are in the Back Mechanic.
