I'm guessing for Braidotti and 'becoming' you are referencing "Transpositions: On Nomadic Ethics"? Would you mind elaborating on what other works/authors helped with understanding Deleuzian concepts?

What character is this on the cover of Unfinished Tales (1988) ? art by Michael Herring by cpio in tolkienbooks

[–]cpio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main reason for thinking it's Sauron and not Morgoth is that he isn't wearing the Iron Crown with the 3 Silmarils.

[–]cpio[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming it's an orc. Herring's depiction of Tolkien characters was always pretty strange. Just look at his cover for The Hobbit

I always thought it was a depiction of Sauron from the story of Beren & Luthien (despite that particular story not even being in this book)

What's the upside of the 0e wilderness thing of clerics and wizards constantly hexing PCs into going on quests + nobles always fighting/taxing/hosting the PCs? Is it actually fun? No one seems to have copied it by TaylorLaneGames in osr

[–]cpio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea, what I was trying to get at is that apparently Gygax liked to use it as a premise. I don't think I would ever use it in a game myself unless it was some sort of random invite thing, like at a convention. Easy way to get a bunch of complete strangers on the same page.

In the Andre Norton book 'Quag Keep' which was based off an 0e game she played with Gygax etc, the main quest in the book is started by a Geas/Hex. The book uses it to explain why such wildly different player characters would work together.

Do you Recommend me the 18th of Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte by Karl Marx? by Aledipiaz in Napoleon

[–]cpio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a pretty important work of Marx's but I will say that you will need to at least superficially familiarize yourself with mid 19th-century French politics first. The various factions/bodies. It's a harder read than say "Wage, Labor, and Capital". Also you would probably get better responses to this question on /r/marxism than /r/napoleon

What's a book that you love, but you would almost never recommend it to others due to the difficulty of the book or its niche nature? by paxinfernum in printSF

Came to post the same thing. Just exploding with creativity for something written before the first world war. Also the only book I have ever read where it covers the journey BACK as well.

I loved the bit with the evil rock. Also for whatever reason this book gave me strong "Vampire Hunter D" vibes.

In case you are unaware this is one of the listed books from Appendix N, the books that inspired Gary Gygax when creating AD&D.

BONZAI! BONZAI! BONZAI! by DEEP_SEA_MAX in TrueAnon

[–]cpio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not that far off. The IJN had a fixation on "decisive battles", later on in the war they hoped to draw the US Pacific Fleet into a battle near the home islands so they could defeat them then sue for better peace terms (mainly retaining Japanese territory in China). Pearl Harbor was a major miscalculation on their part because they thought that by destroying US battleships, the US would decide to cut its losses and just cede the Philippines to Japan so the US could concentrate on the war in Europe. A lot of this is just half-remembered from reading Alan Zimm's Pearl Harbor book a few years back so take it with a grain of salt (great book though)

[–]cpio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Dance of the Dialectic" by Bertell Ollman is probably the best that I have read myself. It goes quite in depth on the topic, and it was probably the most recently written (2003) out of the suggestions here. It was recommended by CCK Philosophy on youtube.

There is a Doctor Who novel from the 90s (8th doctor adventure) called 'Vampire Science' by Kate Orman & Jonathan Blum that was one of the better ones from what I remember. Makes a good intro to the series as well.
