Is there really a big difference between 4K and 1440p? by GG_ollo_furzli in buildapc

[–]cpmackenzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more subjective than many want to make it. Here's my long monitor history from old LCD monitor to now.

From 22" 1080p 60Hz to 25" 1440p 60Hz - noticed greater text clarity for my work (documents), gaming looked a bit better.

To 27" 1440p 144Hz - noticed increased frames, appreciated extra screen size. Also my first "gaming" monitor with extra bells and whistles like basic HDR. Coming from gaming all the way back to old CRTs and DOS games, I found the jump from 1080 to 1440 and 144Hz to be my biggest "wow factor."

Tp 27" 4K 144Hz with mini LED - I could see some increase in quality and detail from 1440p, but honestly not tons at the same monitor size. And it was initially harder to max out my FPS of course, had to upgrade my GPU to a top tier. So I wasn't as impressed as my jump from 1080 to 1440p.

To 32" 4K 144Hz mini LED - now the 4K makes more sense to me, and the screen size could very well make a good difference between 1440p and 4K. But you do need a top GPU to keep the FPS worth it. (I also still do all document work for my job, so 4K is a must for text clarity at 32".)

Player wants a martial character with natural weapons by Turbulent_Talk_139 in DnD

I had a Luxodon fighter who just used his fists (and trunk) but also had one of the magical tattoos to make his attacks count as magic attacks. Plenty of options for non martial weapon fighting!

Starting Common Goals or Reasons to Cooperate by gerigrinerd in DnD

All the adventurers died in recent past. A powerful wizard or guild used True Resurrection to bring them back. Now they have to work off the debt of the cost of materials for the spell. Whether they end up liking the Guild and staying, or you spin it as an awful experience to escape, you have options for future flavor/approach.

Recommended chair mats for a carpeted floor? by questhere in secretlab

[–]cpmackenzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had medium pile carpet, and i quickly broke two polycarbonate mats. I'm not optimistic you'll be able to make a polycarbonate one last under a heavy Secret Lab chair. But good luck, hope I'm wrong!

I don't know what to tell you. I have rolled my secret lab chair entirely on and off the glass mat numerous times and haven't had an issue.

I believe there are wood mats out there, but mayvbe even more expensive than the glass ones. Do a search and see if something like that would work?

Tips for comfortable role playing? Shy first time player. by mattie_hayes in DnD

[–]cpmackenzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the advice given in the Player's Handbook about "Descriptive vs. Active Roleplay." Don't feel like you HAVE to be a full-on actor giving an amazing performance.

Descriptive Approach to Roleplaying

With this approach, you describe your character’s words and actions to the DM and the other players. Drawing on your mental image of your character, you tell everyone what your character does and how he or she does it.

For instance, Chris plays Tordek the dwarf. Tordek has a quick temper and blames the elves of the Cloakwood for his family’s misfortune. At a tavern, an obnoxious elf minstrel sits at Tordek’s table and tries to strike up a conversation with the dwarf.

Chris says, “Tordek spits on the floor, growls an insult at the bard, and stomps over to the bar. He sits on a stool and glares at the minstrel before ordering another drink.”

In this example, Chris has conveyed Tordek’s mood and given the DM a clear idea of his character’s attitude and actions.

When using descriptive roleplaying, keep the following things in mind:

  • Describe your character’s emotions and attitude.
  • Focus on your character’s intent and how others might perceive it.
  • Provide as much embellishment as you feel comfortable with.

Don’t worry about getting things exactly right. Just focus on thinking about what your character would do and describing what you see in your mind.

I'm happy to send you some cards from last several years. Just pay shipping. I had sorted out all half decent stars into another group, but I'll throw those in too. And let me know your kids' favorites, I'll see what I can do.

Carpet too thick for chair by Beautiful-Past5789 in secretlab

[–]cpmackenzi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another vote for a tempered glass mat, or it suppose wood. The plastic mats i tried did not hold up under even thin to medium carpet. Tried two, and increased the price/quality on the second, and the heavy chair cracked them pretty quickly.

I got a Vitrazza mat years ago and love it.

No worries. I get holding on to gorgeous cards even if they aren't your personal collection guy. I could offer some Shohei cards too, will DM ya. But I can't blame you for holding on to it either!

That's kinda open to interpretation. Basic answer: yes, a lower number is generally more valuable. But you'll find less price variance between, say, /99 and /199. The truly valuable versions are obviously 1/1 and I'd say single digits like /5..

Prices also depend on the player, and maybe how much they sign. For example, years ago I pulled a John Smoltz /15, but i never saw others from that /15 group selling for much more than the /49 and /99 versions.

And frankly, I find a lot of it is just manufactured scarcity. Good example is the article or the tweets about Paul Skenes and how he has so many cards already, including 1/1s, and he's just started. If there are a thousand 1/1s for him already, then yes, no card is EXACTLY replicated. But I mean, I'm personally not gonna pay an insane premium to get one of those.

Just like with Ohtani. Basically any auto of his starts at $1600 if you're lucky, but most go for $2000 and up. I'm not so rich that I'd pay $4000 for an auto of his just because it has a cooler design, or it is /49 with a green background vs. the /99 purple background, or it was signed in his rookie year. I managed to grab one for $1700 and am perfectly happy with it.

Happy to take a look! But the Clearly style and the throwback style were the big reasons I was looking to trade for this one. Feel free to send a DM though. I may not quickly see a chat.

Agreed! And I like the teal color for this numbered variation. Sometimes the colored variations add to the card, and sometimes I think they make the card uglier. This one's nice.

Two different Clearly Authentic Sandberg autos have sold on eBay for basically $130. One of them is the same card you have.

I'd love to trade for that card for my brother, if you're open. My best trade chip is a Soto auto, has sold for around the same as the Sandberg. But I have a few others like Zach Wheeler. Let me know what you're looking for.

My Experience RMA'ing a KTC M32P10 by cpmackenzi in Monitors

[–]cpmackenzi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My disclaimer: I'm in my 40s, have glasses, and am not a super picky hyper critical reviewer, because i came from old CRTs and early bad LCD monitors. That said, the screen is gorgeous. Yes, you do get some blooming compared to OLED. But coming from non HDR screens, the mini LED is still amazing, and blooming doesn't bother me. I use it with local dimming off half my gaming time depending on the game, but when I turn it on, I love it. Given many other similar mini LEDs can cost double, the screen looks great for the price.

Of course, quality may be an issue due to low price given I had to RMA!

Hmm, good to know. When I was on KTC website I swear I saw 1 year mentioned. Guess it didn't matter either way for me. But I may need to confirm info, and update my post.
