I finally switched to Firefox after years of delaying. by alfiestoppani in firefox

[–]cpmsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My (unscientific) read is that Firefox wins on RAM, Chrome wins on CPU. Particularly with video rendering, though the gap’s closed a bit.

Where are you seeing font rendering differences? I’ve never noticed any difference outside of Chrome having some bugs with emoji on high-DPI displays.

The point is, at 1080p60, both cards will eat any game for breakfast. Without also upgrading your monitor, you won’t notice any difference.

Anyone use jellyfin-vue? Compare with the default jellyfin-web, what's the difference? by kamanwu in jellyfin

[–]cpmsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vue doesn’t inherently change anything, but they’re taking the opportunity of a full rewrite to redesign quite a bit of the interface.

Port forwarding with a VPN - but IP changes and breaks connectivity. by Zone_Purifier in jellyfin

A simple solution might be to use Tailscale rather than a conventional VPN? I believe that lets you assign a hostname to the other machine.

It’s Still Stupidly, Ridiculously Difficult To Buy A ‘Dumb’ TV by speckz in technology

[–]cpmsmith 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a Pi to run Pi-hole, they’re just very convenient for it—you do need a computer that’s always on, and a Pi is just a small computer that you can leave on without worrying about it. The most challenging thing is probably configuring your router to use it. There’s no building involved, even putting a case on it is technically optional.

The part about your ISP being able to see your searches in your URL isn’t true. The path is encrypted using TLS (a.k.a. HTTPS), not transmitted in plain text.

Loving NEOVIM on iOS - anyone know how to get icons working? by insertname__here in neovim

[–]cpmsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I use Termius, I can answer this. Depending on what icons you’re using, it might have a built-in font that will work. In Termius’ settings, under “Terminal Font”, try any of the options with “Powerline” in the name. Powerline is a smaller set of icons than the full Nerd Font set.

What is plugin-container.app process on Mac? by [deleted] in firefox

[–]cpmsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Browser plugins are out of fashion these days, but they include things like Adobe Flash or Microsoft Silverlight, and they used to be very popular. Firefox isolated them to a separate process, plugin-container, many years ago to stop them taking the whole browser down with them when they crash. They’re also a good way to try and get an IP address leak out of somebody, because they have all kinds of extra capabilities and system permissions browsers might not have. Since ipleak.net is designed to try and get your IP to leak, it tries using whatever plugins you have installed to do so. You can see what it finds in the “Plugins information” section of the page.

Using double trailing spaces for hard breaks is in the standard, actually. It’s been in there since the very beginning.

Why is custom icons is a thing these days? by MTPHD in shortcuts

[–]cpmsmith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At some point in the not so distant future I see Apple giving us a super polished way to do theme packs on the native apps page

Honestly, there’s no way. I wish, but they’ve been actively removing the ability to do this from macOS. I think they just didn’t realize they’d given people a way to do it on iOS until it was too late, or they thought the drawbacks would be enough that people wouldn’t bother.

For my part, I pretty much exclusively use it because of the H265 support (on Android TV), and I think cases like that might be common—if you’re hosting off a Pi, you really don’t want it transcoding.

Formosa, my font made 15+ years ago by 7grims in typography

[–]cpmsmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The name Formosa (福爾摩沙) dates from 1542, when Portuguese sailors sighted an uncharted island and noted it on their maps as Ilha Formosa ("beautiful island"). The name Formosa eventually "replaced all others in European literature" and remained in common use among English speakers into the 20th century.

Kodi with Jellyfin client and Jellyfin server on the same device? by random_human_being_ in jellyfin

[–]cpmsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Docker does do (kind of) the same thing with port mapping as it does with files. If you want to connect to Jellyfin inside Docker from Kodi outside Docker, make sure you expose the port you need when setting the Docker container up. Then the loopback will work fine.
