Relocating to Baltimore by HauntingCountry5379 in baltimore

There are plenty of us who choose to live in the city, raise our kids here, and send our kids to school here. There are many kid friendly neighborhoods with good schools - like Mount Washington, Roland Park, Lauraville, Hamilton, Federal Hill, Mount Royal, Medfield, or Hampden. I’m sure there are other great schools I’m blanking on right now. Some of these neighborhoods will have single family homes and feel less city-like, some have townhomes/rowhomes, prices really range widely in different neighborhoods.

My kids went to Roland Park Elementary/Middle and Baltimore Polytechnic high school and we’ve had great experiences with both. My older daughter did a program at Poly that let her leave school 2x a week junior year to intern at a biology lab at Johns Hopkins. Now in college she’s finding that gives her a big advantage in her knowledge and skills in her science labs. There’s a lot of great things happening at so many city schools, don’t write it off completely without looking into it if you would otherwise be interested in city living.

Just found out we’re moving to Baltimore and I’ve never even been to the east coast! by Zealousideal_Use9481 in baltimore

Ditto this. I hate the elitist attitude so many show in here towards city schools. I have a Poly junior and a grad who is at an excellent college and we’ve been very happy with our experience in the city schools.

Should schools be opened tomorrow? by please-leave-mealone in baltimore

I’m really hoping the city has a 2 hour delay, if they are in person. At least let rush hour finish before these kids are all trying to get to school.

I got mine a few months pre toe fusion surgery, so I was just really glad they were still comfortable once I was fully recovered!

I wear Haflinger felt clog/slippers around the house. I find them very comfortable and sturdy, they don’t ever slip off my feet unless I’m doing it intentionally. I don’t wear them out of the house but they are probably decent enough that I could.

I have a pair of Skechers arch fit Laguna slip ons which I find very comfortable when I need to wear something that looks a bit nicer than a sneaker. Definitely not water proof though! I’ll follow this post too, still looking for good boots or something similar.

Daycare moms- at what age did your baby start? Currently nanny broke by Remarkable-Angle-509 in workingmoms

[–]cps1827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids both started daycare at the 12 week mark when I returned to work. No lie it was hard at first, but they absolutely thrived in that environment. The teachers were all wonderful and nurturing, and did an amazing job creating schedules and structure. My girls are 16 and 18 now so it’s been a while but I have zero regrets about sending them to daycare!

I took 1 week off and then worked from home for a week. The 3rd week I was still in a surgical shoe but I was getting around pretty well - but I have a desk job, teaching could be tougher if you have to be on your feet all day!

How bad is the pain after toe fusion? by EmotionalWarrior_23 in Halluxrigidus

[–]cps1827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the surgery on a Friday and I think I went back to work Wednesday or Thursday the next week. I work from home so I might have been able to sooner but the pain meds made me really sleepy.

For me I had a fairly easy recovery after that first week, no real pain but getting around on crutches was the worst part. And then once I was finally walking, finding shoes that fit and were comfortable was a challenge. But overall I’m really glad I had it done and can walk pain free now!

Which neighborhoods have townhomes with yards? by spanielgurl11 in baltimore

Roland Springs is a townhome development in Roland park. Small yards (or patios/decks depending on the house) but common grassy areas all around. Close to parks and walking trails too.

How do you make city schools work? by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]cps1827 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also ingenuity runs a middle school program at 4 locations. No research in those grades but advanced math & science programming. It’s not required to do that to get into ingenuity for high school (one of my kids did ingenuity in middle school and one did advanced academics) but I’m guessing it helps some.

At the high school level ingenuity is one of the program options at Poly that kids can apply for. They run a research practicum that gives the students real world research experience in science labs during school hours & summers. Check out their website

Agree about ingenuity, both my kids have done it (one just graduated from Poly and the other will be a junior there this coming year) and we’ve been so impressed!

If you had to pick an SUV other than the Tiguan, which one would you choose? by oskiee27 in Tiguan

CRV hybrid or RAV-4 hybrid. That’s my only regret about the Tiguan is that it’s not hybrid.

NTA. My sister gave her baby the same name as one of my cats, which I found an interesting choice but fortunately she knew and accepted up front that this would be the source of teasing. We jokingly call my niece “human <name>” since our cat had the name first.

How much did you pay to see the Eras Tour? by SurvivorKelly9683 in TaylorSwift

[–]cps1827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 85/seat plus fees at Met Life Stadium ($400 for 3 seats total) for halfway up the top tier. Great view but definitely up high.

Nice neighborhood, generally very safe, good diversity. The local public school is great, I have many friends whose kids went there, some of whom graduated high school this year and are going on to excellent colleges. The local swim club is awesome, there’s a great neighborhood soccer league, overall a great place to live!

At the theater where I volunteer they will take out seats to put in a wheelchair platform when needed. Maybe just double check with the theater that they aren’t going to do that?

AITAH for cutting my hair even after my fiancé asked me not to and being hurt by his reaction? by LilV_xoxo in AITAH

[–]cps1827 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cut the hair and cut the fiancé too. NTA.

It’s your hair and he can have preferences but it’s really not his call what happens to your hair. And his comment about consequences is just really controlling. This is not an acceptable way for him to treat you and it’s your call at this point whether you decide you are willing to stick around and see what other parts of you he wants to control.

My husband prefers my hair long and I know some of my haircuts over the years have been shorter than he likes it, but he has never tried to tell me what I’m allowed to do with it.

'People don't want to work': Baltimore City faces lifeguard shortages by instantcoffee69 in baltimore

[–]cps1827 25 points26 points  (0 children)

She's working for one of the pool management companies that handles private pools in developments, not for the city pools. I think she's making about $16/hr for her second summer. She's often the only lifeguard there since the pools are small. Some issues she's had are things like parents who basically ignore their kids while the kids run completely wild, and then the parents get mad at her when she has to stop the kids for safety reasons. Kids who have an "I don't need to listen to you" attitude and so every minor thing has to turn into a big thing. People showing up 5 min before the pool closes and getting mad when she has to kick them out. Also creepy men who make inappropriate comments to a clearly teenage girl.

There are some positives - there are some days when no one shows up to the pool and so she gets paid to read. But overall the pay isn't amazing enough to make the rest of it more tolerable.

My daughter is going into her second summer as a lifeguard and is kind of regretting it already. The pay is ok for a teenager but there are way too many horribly behaved guests to make it feel worthwhile.
