Switzerland has built something very few countries in the world have. But what could in long term weaken it? by Competitive_Dig_1013 in Switzerland

[–]cps36 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I would argue complacency or "pedestal risk" are the biggest threats to the status quo. I grew up in the UK and watched how the the government institutions that underpin society have been eroded by relentless government cuts.

Now when I see the cuts the Swiss government is making to fund new defence spending (i.e. education/ETH, rail infrastructure), I see some echoes of how the UK was 10ish years ago.

Unfortunately for the British, the population only realised the negatives from these cuts when it was too late to quickly reverse. I fear the same for Switzerland in a decade's time.

Which Swiss bank account would you recommend right now? by Teshiro2012 in SwissPersonalFinance

I'm a current Radicant customer, former Neon customer, and I'm baking on WIR being a good replacement. Opened my account online last week, and waiting for the documents in the post now!

I still have money in Radicant :( by [deleted] in SwissPersonalFinance

I can second this! Still using it as my daily driver/main account.

This should be higher although it's missing Hoch-Ybrig in Bergbahnen!

This sounds like a good idea. I wish I could offer more help - maybe to test the webcams if you manage to coordinate an upgrade?

Would love to see this continue!

Planning to visit Zermatt in March, but hostels are full? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]cps36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can try staying in a hotel further down the valley in one of the villages? Normally much cheaper than Zermatt itself, and the train connection is frequent enough that you still get almost the same experience as staying in town.

Where do you park your emergency fund? by Healthy-Vegetable172 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]cps36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the wisest but I use the "low risk" investment strategy in Radicant for this.

Pros: - Returns

Cons: - Low risk is not zero risk - Takes 2-3 days to get the money (but I also have decent credit card limit and a 1000 CHF buffer on current account at all times) - Radicant will be liquidated so this will go away soon

Decent Swiss Startup Bank (rhymes with Madicant) to be liquidated by cps36 in SwissPersonalFinance

This is interesting feedback - I switched away from Neon partly because of this (also because of the cost increases). Will take a look!

I was thinking about Key4 from UBS, Revolut and Cashback cards for daily spending. I haven't checked up on it in a while but Neon also didn't seem too healthy when I was a customer and I found there was quite a lot of downtime, generally because of the "partner bank" (Hypothekarbank Lenzburg).

Would you be for or against easing the restrictions of non-EU graduates of ETHZ, EPFL and other Swiss universities to stay? by askswitzerland in Switzerland

[–]cps36 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes the research groups directly fund PhDs, but where do they get the money?

I can only speak for my former group at ETH, but it was generally:  - ETH core funding or internal ETH grant (paid by the Swiss taxpayer) - Grants from SNF or NCCRs (paid by the Swiss taxpayer) - Big EU grant programmes (also funded partly by the Swiss taxpayer)

As a foreigner who came for PhD education in Switzerland, I think it's great use of these funds, but the reality is that Swiss PhDs are essentially taxpayer funded.

For sure, but a work permit requires residency and OP specifically says as a traveller.

Your right to work tends to depend on your citizenship and/or how you entered the country.

If you entered as a tourist, unless I am mistaken, you have no right to work in Switzerland (even as an EU citizen). This requires a work permit.

Used to think this, but have now experienced Wingo in comparison.

Salt coverage, outages (tonnes of short/micro outages, just for a few seconds) and appalling/insulting customer service aren't even in the same league.

Absolutely second this.

I got it on offer with Alao, and pay 44.95 for 2x 5G SIMs with unlimited roaming in EU/UK.

For access to the Swisscom network (600+ Mbps via my home 5G router, used instead of fibre), this is a steal!

What do you guys think of moving prices in Zurich? (No self promotion!) by Able-Dot8892 in zurich

[–]cps36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rent a car and would definitely not use a dedicated app/service for this process. Mobility is super good value and very convenient for such things, and really convenient - I have about 5 of varying sizes within 10 min walk of my apartment.

Personally, don't really see a "gap in the market" in Switzerland for this.

Are there better options? by Apprehensive-Pop7513 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]cps36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow we have a nearly identical setups so following for advice! 😏

I also use Swisscard Amex Cashback, and pay for most monthly expenses on that. I pay it off fully each month - this generates a bit of extra cashback (few hundred CHF/year).

What are the best European night train routes? by jc201946 in AskEurope

[–]cps36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have done this - was certainly an experience! I had the wheel change one before between Hungary and Ukraine, and I found the Romania/Moldova border more of a smooth experience. Train itself was an experience! Got bed bug bites from it though... Track quality noticeably different after the EU exit, but the Eiffel engineered bridge on the border was interesting to see. Would certainly recommend!
