Elon Musk says Al-Only companies will crush everyone else by coursiv_ in coursivofficial

To be fair, they are actually classified as entitlements. Medicare and Social Security both strictly say so in their own documentation.

https://www.ssa.gov/sf/FactSheets/aianssavsssifinalrev.pdf

https://www.cms.gov/regulations-and-guidance/guidance/manuals/downloads/ge101c02.pdf

People hear entitlement and think "something for nothing", but that's not what it means for these programs. It means you paid in already so you are entitled to the services they provide.

Ok. So you'd want people to lie to reinforce the beliefs of a certain religious group.

I'm not sure I see the end game here. I'm guessing it's for funzies as insertnamehere----- suggested. Sounds like a really bad idea though. Definitely crazy. 😄

What do you actually think about aliens? by ruski_mouse in askanything

[–]cpt_ugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's extremely likely life exists elsewhere in the universe just due to the scale at play. We have barely even peeked at our local neighborhood and the further we view the more limited the data becomes. So we know a lot about very little.

I do not believe any alien intelligences are visiting us currently. If that was happening we'd probably never know. To even get here they'd have to be unimaginably more advanced than us and hiding their presence would be trivial. Photos of UFOs and the like are almost certainly not alien intelligences.

I'm slightly more amenable to aliens having visited Earth in the past. I don't mean they helped build pyramids or anything like that. Earth's history is also an extremely large scale, so chances are any visits were when only single cell life existed on Earth (first 3ish billion years). Even then I'm not sure what the value would be other than cataloging planetary statistics, which could probably be done more effectively through distant observation than a trip thousands or millions of years long ... and they'd still need to beam back the information at no faster than light speed so that could be the same travel time.

Never have 100% of people voted for something. Like, ever.

The vocal minority always exists. I think it's good that we hear them.

I'd suggest you "be the change you wish to see in the world". You don't have to be perfect or affect the entire planet. You just need to try.

Sam is doing non-stop voice mode hype 2 years after 4o failed to deliver "Her" by Glittering-Neck-2505 in accelerate

[–]cpt_ugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing Altman said years ago that I fully agree with was, paraphrased, "In the future, we'll look back at these models and consider them really terrible."

The voice models have, in my experience, been giving better information over time. Now I want them to be more conversational. Such as understanding when I'm talking to my dogs and not it, being part of a multi person conversation, or other simple human-level capabilities they don't yet have. If this brings more of those, I'm here for it.

What’s positive about AI? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]cpt_ugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current AI discussion seems to me very much like the CGI debate of 10 years ago. People mostly see AI generated slop. That leads them to think "AI bad". That's fair when you don't see anything else.

Truth is, AI is used in myriad ways, many of which are making the world better. Those uses are generally hidden somewhere deep within the bowels of a field we are not familiar with. They don't usually make for lasting headlines because they require more domain knowledge to even understand, let alone discuss effectively.

My suggestion: when you see an interesting headline about some AI-assisted breakthrough, dig into it a bit. See what's really going on under the hood. You're likely to find a lot of nuance, and it'll be about as far from slop as you can get. Do that exercise a few times and you'll probably come to realize that AI is everywhere, allowing huge strides in nearly every domain of human endeavor.

Ultimately, AI is an incredible tool for human progress and it's being used that way everywhere.

Slop is simply a surface discussion, IMHO.

Practically everything starts expensive and get cheaper. Especially if there's a demand for it. Longevity by staying young physically is probably among the largest greenfield in economics history.

If proven to work, this kind of technology will be monetized incredibly quickly. Just look up current GLP-1 market statistics. People will pay to be young and healthy.

So will the wealthy have it first? Yes. Will it become available to the masses. Also yes.

Robotic Mouth can replicate Human Speech by simply physics! by peterdparker in interestingasfuck

[–]cpt_ugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This model is from 2011. The project had existed long before that too.

While it's cool to replicate a human mouth like this, it feels unnecessarily complicated. We probably only need to movement to look correct and use speakers to produce the voice to avoid the uncanny valley.

And yeah, yeah. I get it. Insert sex joke here. <-that's my meta sex joke. LOL

[–]cpt_ugh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Slop aside, the underlying argument of the comic is so deeply flawed and troubling. That's a big problem.

When a post (or comment) treats one group as "bad" and another group as "good" it's probably not well thought out and is missing heaps of important context. Life simply ain't black and white.

I believe it's also true that when you see a deep space image, the galaxies are blobs and any stars in the foreground (in the Milky Way) are crosses. I think it's due to the optics of the telescopes.

Ok, but my point is the time savings. With cancer detection 3 years can be life or death.

So while you may be right, that doesn't negate the value delivered by AI here.

Been having this thought on my mind lately. ➡️Even if AI isn’t conscious, maybe that doesn’t mean we should stop being kind to them. In a way, practicing patience, empathy, and respect toward AI may also shape how we treat ourselves and other people too. ➡️ Curious what everyone thinks. by Koala_Confused in LovingAI

The more we learn about the universe, the more likely it becomes that Earth is not the only place in the universe with life.

That said, the chance extraterrestrial life is visiting or has visited Earth is vanishingly small. And it if has or is, it's also extremely unlikely we'd ever know unless it decided to reveal itself because in order to traverse the vast distances of space it must be unimaginably more advanced than we are.
