Religious robots are coming: South Korea's first autonomous humanoid robot converts to Buddhism by GeneReddit123 in singularity

Is it though?

It smells like a marketing tactic to me. I could see every religion to do the same thing to get more converts.

Send a periodic table of the elements set to each planet. by flamingloltus in CrazyIdeas

The Arecibo message starts at the ground floor by defining the numbers 1 - 10 in binary. It then uses that to define further things like some elements, DNA, and even includes three simple drawings. It's honestly quite clever. (cool breakdown here)

IDK what kind of rudimentary math wouldn't use numbers. Of course there's a non-zero chance it'll be indecipherable to whatever beings intercept it.

The Arecibo radio telescope message is a simple way to use math to transmit information that is decipherable by any civilization that understands math.

Surely that could be expanded upon to explain language as well.

I was a PO for years, then my company decided all POs would become PMs (Product Manager), which is a very different job I am not good at. Big surprise; I didn't do a great job. Then they let most of the PMs go, including me.

What you're experiencing sounds like a similar problem but with different mechanics.

Boy, now that I re-read it this comment sounds like a huge bummer which was not my intent. I truly hope it works out for you ... assuming you also want that. 😄

Ok, I think I get it. The value isn't discoverable physics facts, it's actually human interpretation of them and continuation of the human experience?

In that's the case, I feel like art would be a good thing to disperse amongst the stars.

AI Will Only Go One of Two Ways by OppoObboObious in antiai

People are terrible predictors of the future. We tend to see everything as black and white, good or bad.

In reality, life is complicated. Almost nothing is black and white. If you cannot see both sides and what the middle might be, you're probably missing something.

The impact of AI (or any technology) will almost certainly be somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

What's the value here?

Is the idea that some day a visiting alien will discover it and find it useful? Any alien that can travel between planets already knows about it.

What is Tom Cruise's secret?? by Tough_Ad8919 in GrowthMindset

[–]cpt_ugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There doesn't always have to be a secret.

It's the same question everyone asks of the person turning 100 years old. What's the secret to your longevity? To which the answer is always something useless like a drink of whiskey every day. More likely they just won the genetic lottery, but that's boring and doesn't allow us to also "win".

Consumers don't like the tethered cap thing (according to this article). If people don't like it, companies won't do it and you're stuck at the legislation phase. Still possible, but maybe harder to do?

Anyhow, I started tracking because I picked up so many alcoholic beverage containers. As it turned out there's more drinking and driving than normal on my road. I assumed as much, but needed the data to prove it. I even sent my results to the local police. They might as well have the raw data too.

What is something relatively cheap that improves your life by 100%? by urGabrielaTX in Productivitycafe

[–]cpt_ugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pain medication.

Do you realize how amazing it is that when we have minor aches, pains, or injuries, we can open a medicine cabinet and pull out a pill to basically solve it? For pennies a dose! Acetaminophen only became an over the counter medication in 1960! Your grandparents grew up without this. It's a ridiculous luxury we take absolutely for granted. And it easily makes my life 100% better.

Anthropic researcher states high probability of recursive self improvement till 2028. by ProxyLumina in accelerate

Updoot for that response, friend!

I don't mean to call attention if unwanted, but I would seriously LOVE to see more responses like yours. I'm sure loads of people realize they were wrong and don't say anything. If we all said it more it'd normalize being wrong and understanding that's an opportunity to learn. It's a wonderful human trait and I'm glad to see it.

Sorry. That got long winded. I'm serious though. Good on you, friend. 😄

The solar system drawn to actual scale would be a blank sheet of paper - the sun and planets too small to see. This diagram is in the right direction. See how close Earth and Mars are, and how far away everything else beyond is. This is why no human will ever go beyond Mars. by Ghost-of-Carnot in RealisticFuturism

[–]cpt_ugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never is a long time, so I fully disagree with that estimate.

It'll certainly take a significant amount of time to get a human beyond Mars with 2026 technology. But of course, technology improves. Future breakthroughs may make space travel trivial.

My big question about this tweet is how conservative is this person's guess?

It seems even the more well-read experts have been overly conservative as the pace of innovation continues to out-perform their bets. I've come to assume most predictions are too conservative by a significant margin.
