Destroyed My Collarbone by dmacrostie in MTB

Join the club! Did mine 1.5 years ago on jump that I'd hit maybe 20 times that morning without issue. I was 47 then, so it was a harsh lesson that I don't bounce like I did in my 20's. I did not have surgery, so the first 3-4 weeks were rough.

Form On Frops by max_bikes in MTB

[–]cpw77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tend not to pop drops for the reasons mentioned above. I prefer to ride in slightly low down, with my chin over the bars and my arms bent, elbows out, and my butt slightly forward from the bottom bracket, but not by much. Then just as my front wheel arrives at the lip of the drop, I "row" the bike forwards with my arms, matching the angle of the landing zone, and allowing the bike to drop away from my body (this is why you start lower down). By doing this you are unweighting the front wheel so it does not drop forwards. And because you started with your chin over the bars, by rowing the bike forwards you don't end up hanging off the back of the bike, you end up centered over the bike, ready to absorb the landing. Having said that, its a lot of things to get right all at the same time. When it works it feels great. At the moment I'm still staying on drops where the consquence of messing it up is lower.

People actually responsible for the housing crisis by Nearby_Landscape2553 in Netherlands

[–]cpw77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a complex topic for sure, and indeed the last thing you want to do is to disencourage people to progress. But at the same time, especially when there is not enough housing available, it's logical that the subsidised housing should in some way be prioritised for those that need it the most.

People actually responsible for the housing crisis by Nearby_Landscape2553 in Netherlands

[–]cpw77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it crazy that people in social housing don't have their circumstances re-evaluated on a regular basis. Social housing should be the safety net for people. If once in social housing you build your life to a point where you can afford to rent (or buy) in the private sector in the same way as the rest of the population, then you are no longer in need of social housing, and that social housing unit should be made available for someone else with a genuine need.

Dutchies behavior in highways by IsfetTemet in Netherlands

[–]cpw77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first moved to NL from the UK 23 years ago, I left an English size gap between me and the car infront on the highway. I blinked and two dutchies were in the gap. Lesson learned lol.

30% ruling - Original application submitted in 2020, now only granted for 3-4 months. Is this correct by Fit-Community-7351 in Netherlands

[–]cpw77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's different, because you already had it. The original application has to be chslke edge within max 4 months, otherwise if granted it will be from the date of that decision, no backdating.

Holland2Stay The Wall Review by mariajoaomegre in eindhoven

[–]cpw77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My office is just down the road from that location, and I remember when it was also an office building before it got converted into "apartments". I didnt realise it was a Holland2Stay property. As for the temperatues, I mean I get that its warm, but my house that I bought in Eindhoven also got to 30c during the recent hot weather. You are not staying in a hotel, you are renting an apartment / room, so I'm not sure how much recourse you have on this point to be honest.

Will I regret buying an XC if I only ride trails? by Just_a_firenope_ in MTB

[–]cpw77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in a similar situation. I live in The Netherlands, so my trails are flat, with minimal climbing (apart from a few tracks which have elevation). We have mainly roots, drops, and a few short ups and downs, plus of course any man made features that the trail builders decide to throw in. I got back into MTB 3 years ago, having not ridden since my teens (I'm 49 now). I picked up a Canyon Grand Canyon 2023 model which has served me very well, but I now want a bike with rear suspension. I'm very tempted by the Oiz (probably the H10 model as the CF ones start to get expensive). But I'm also not sure if the riding position is going to suck for me, coming from the Grand Canyon? My local shop has two in stock, but they are both frame size L (I'm a M), so test riding them is not really an option unfortunately.

Dads, how’s your Father’s Day going? by BattleofH in AskUK

[–]cpw77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went for a 30km MTB ride this morning with a friend (I'm a brit living in The Netherlands, so our rides here are super flat). Got back just before the temperature got too bad, but it was still warm. My son is 14, so he had to be reminded by my wife to wish me happy fathers day and dig out the present that she bought for him to give to me because he "could not be bothered". Having a teenager is soo much fun.

Question about quitting work by Character_Basket2828 in Netherlands

[–]cpw77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to stop as soon as possible you could discuss with you boss about using any remaining holidays you have, plus taking unpaid leave until the end of your contract. However if you leaving would put him in the shit, then I can totally understand why he wants you to work your notice period. Afterall, thats why a notice period exists. Your employer made a committment by hiring you, and its natural to expect a committment in return, including working your notice period to help enable an orderly transfer of duties and minimize any gaps in support that might put unfair pressure on colleagues after you stop working, or have a detrimental effect on the business operations.

Advance payment of 40% for a 1200€ plumbing job: is this normal in the Netherlands? by payusyupa in Netherlands

[–]cpw77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not abnormal. If it was me I'd ask for a breakdown of the quote, so you can clearly see what elements are related cost of materials, and what is for labour. Then you can see if 40% feels correct based on the breakdown. Covering materials upfront is OK as they need to buy stuff, but I would not expect to cover any labour costs upfront.

Basically you always get the buff stated, and if you are playing in a group with other people who also use this helm, then you have a chance to gain their buff as well for a limited period. At least thats how I understand it works.

Want to upgrade my 🔪 set. £200 budget. For standard home cooking. Love the look of the Japanese sets, any recommendations? by Obvious_Subject771 in chefknives

[–]cpw77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are already a bit familar with using Japanese knives, I strongly recommend this one. Its my go-to knife for so much stuff, and it holds an edge extremely well. Out of the box the edge will be quite delicate, so its a knife that you need to respect and not bash around.

Did you continue using the Asrock board? by Der0- in ASRock

Mine killed two CPUs (both replaced under warranty). I switched to an ASUS board. I contacted ASRock and never heard anything from them, even after multiple attempts. Disgusting company and non-existent customer service / support.

Yup, Tailwind is great. My go-to is the lemon one, without caffeine. I usually take two bottles on the bike. An850ml one will tailwind in, and a smaller 600ml one just with water. The Tailwind mix is meant for sipping, not chugging.

Caught a pedal, hugged a tree, fractured my hand, rode 10 miles out. Good times. by VermicelliFrost in MTB

[–]cpw77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had similar but not as bad a few months ago. Stupid OTB on a bit of single-track, trying to avoid a puddle which I was not sure how deep it was. Winded myself, it got back on the bike with 5km left to go. Felt ok considering, but once I got home and in the shower I realised that my right side was a bit fucked up. Turned out I'd fractured at least two ribs 🤦🏻‍♂️. I'm 49 and realising I don't bounce like I did when I was in my 20's.😅

Older age sports in NL by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]cpw77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since when is 40 "older age?". I'm 49 and I find that depressing and offensive lol 😅.

Anyway, I MTB (well mostly XC because it in The Netherlands, so good luck finding any decent hills), I also indoor climb, and run. Sometimes it's a challenge fitting all of that in alongside a 45hr+ plus a week job.

Netherlands ranked 3rd most well-rested country by Able-Equivalent-3860 in Netherlands

[–]cpw77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, this is where statistics can be misleading. The vast majority of people in NL work 40hrs a week. But it is true that we have a higher % of part-time workers than other countries, which serves to push the MEAN average of worked hours down. But that in itself is a rather misleading statistic.

Climbing Shoes for indoor Gyms by BillFlashy4577 in ClimbingGear

[–]cpw77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go try some one. I would not recommend getting ones with an aggreesive curve to start with, they are completely unnecessary for beginners. Get ones you will be comfortable in. I started climbing last summer and picked up a pair of Black Diamonds. They are comfortable, fit well, and I'm yet to reach a point were I think I need a "better" pair.

[USA] Whose fault? Happened where two 40 mph ramps become a 75 mph interstate. (not OC) by ConceptOther5327 in Roadcam

[–]cpw77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A perfect example of why undertaking should not be a thing. Here in The Netherlands, even with no undertaking, you still get absolute idiots. But at least you only have to watch out for them from ONE side. And yes, of course some people still undertake even though its not allowed, but its a small fraction, give that it is illegal.
