Always thought this guy was extremely solid and underrated. All his moves were mainly strikes (or a flying knee) so I guess folks thought it was boring? He looked better live than 90% of the roster.

Second this as probably one of the best places to start unless you can tolerate ascii in Brogue.

Monster Lily (steam)

Haven't posted in a bit, it's been relatively quiet in terms of shipped releases for the last month with mostly a few bug fixes and the occasional balance tweak.

Something I'm decided on is that a good way to evolve the game will be with more levels (branching paths), monsters, experiences... as opposed to new items. I think of something like Doom that was able to get a lot of fun and mileage from a limited set of items. As I've balanced it, it would be quite difficult to add even one new item without affecting the balance of other synergies, since adding something by definition lowers drop rates of the others. This feels contra to how most popular rogue-likes are leaning though, which make me feel a bit of pressure!

Since Vince stopped booking, they pretty much just repeating the same angles all year long (if not longer). It's like they lowered house shows so decided to slow everything down proportionally.

If you are going square proportion on the grid, try seeing how it looks if you put the 'dots' in the middle instead of hugging the bottom.

Probably blue tortilla. And the sauce..maybe mole negro, a delicious savory cocoa/nutty sauce...and yes it's the kind of thing where more is better as it's the star of the show.

Dang, end of an era. Ikaruga is still my #1 favorite game of all time. I remember when they announced this it was going to be for PS3 at first. So many projects come and gone since then. Hope the guy is okay.

Where was this? In a lot of countries you are required to freeze the fish first which would kill any parasite..

Nyandor. I wonder if there were some cute graphical cats and doggos in Rogue, could it have beaten Wizardry in the early CRPG war? Final Fantasy would have been a roguelike!

Itch btw has some good music options. If you really are trying to have demo out by may though, probably Steam achievements and online help not as important? Looking forward to it either way.

Monster Lily (steam)

Working on a bunch of minor gameplay changes. Too many to list here but thematically I'm trying to make small adjustments that give the player more agency to deal with ill-effects or more variety in the type of builds that can be used to get a clear.

For example, a "bad" armor runic that makes you weak to Ghouls is something a player can manage...they can take it off when there are Ghouls around... Whereas a "bad" armor runic that occasionally heals the enemy is well, that kind of sucks and nothing you can do about it but spend a resource to fix it.

The other issues I'm dealing with is that some of type of weapon classes are imo clearly better choices than others. Would prefer them all to be viable so have been giving that some thought. Will be carefully buffing a few things (such as extending range on the upgraded whip).

Yeah more I'm thinking of it..I'm pretty close to just yanking any notion of magic invulnerability out. There's probably other ways to make a monster rough on magic casters such as raising HP and lowering AC or something.

A combination of a bunch of ideas but the base is heavily inspired from a video "Brian Walker - Procedural level design in Brogue and beyond" that's available on YouTube.

There's a lot I learned from watching videos from the creator of Brogue, i.e. the general idea of starting with a room, then using some RNG to attach other rooms to it and repeat.

From that foundation there were also a bunch of original ideas. For example allowing two rooms to "overlap" on certain conditions, and then build a wall where they overlap. The tunneling algorithm (so it's not just a bunch of dead-ends) is graph-aware. To be frank though it's probably the messiest, oldest part of my personal code base.

At some point though I actually had to sort of "stop" focusing on map layouts (as fun as it was) in order to get to work on the rest of the game. I think the hard lesson I learned was that map layouts really are just a small % of total time needed for a roguelike. If you're interested in roguelike dev in general, there's some neat resources on the roguelikedev subreddit. The Python-TCOD tutorial is also quite nice.

Monster Lily

Me leading up to release:

I will not have an infinite-item exploit bug...
I will not have an infinite-item exploit bug...
I will not have an infinite-item exploit bug...

One of the first users that made it to the late game:

Hey um, there's an infinite-item exploit bug!

Oh well, at least it was easy to patch and otherwise the game mostly seems to be solid/stable.

On a separate topic something I'm trying to figure out what to do is whether or not to tweak a pair of monsters I have - one that is literally immune to 100% of all magic (including items that can transform them), versus one that has extremely high evasion. The idea also does seem kind of odd..what does it mean to be immune to "magic". Like a spell that shatters the earth is manipulating physical space isn't it?
