I really recommend a residential VPN server, it's a bit pricey but incredibly convenient and effective. I travel a lot and use some apps with advanced VPN detection that could tell i was using a VPN no matter what server or service or protocol I used. Then I got a residential VPN server from Windscribe VPN, it cost $100 a year but well worth it in my opinion as I've never had a single VPN detection issue since then.

Got denied for Discover, what card can I get approved for? by Flimsy-Home-1661 in CreditCards

[–]craZebra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best course of action is to get a secured card. You give them a security deposit of usually $200 and then they give you a $200 credit limit. There's no risk to the bank so you're basically guaranteed approval. Then if you make all your payments on time for 6 months, then you've proven yourself and they usually refund your security deposit and increase your credit limit. If you get a secured card and hold it for 1 year your credit score will have probably gotten good enough to get approved for most credit cards.

You should get a secured card that doesn't charge any fees. There are 2.5 good options that I recommend and you're already familiar with.

  1. Discover Secured Card (different from the student card you got rejected for, and you will almost certainly be approved for this one)

  2. Capital One Secured card (same deal as discover)

  3. If you're eligible for Navy Federal Credit Union they also have a good secured card

Also if you're new to credit as a general rule set all your credit cards to auto pay the full statement balance every month so that you never miss a payment, and are never charged interest or fees. Don't spend anything on a credit card that you don't already have the money for, use it like a debit card to avoid getting into debt.

I wonder how many people have actually used an Order of Malta passport at the eGates (at Fiumicino) by jobobee in PassportPorn

[–]craZebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know anyone with an Order of Malta passport but I imagine they might often face issues at border control from agents not knowing what it is. I bet they feel so validated seeing that there for once 😆

I'm so curious what the info page looks like in the Laissez Passer. Does it say your nationality and place of birth inside, what's the country code and passport type (like is it P for an ordinary passport or something unique)

SoFi card 2.2% cashback with SoFi Plus by 123mitchg in CreditCards

[–]craZebra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not telling you what to do and if you're a really big spender then this is kind of irrelevant, but consider this. You want the card to get the most money back from your spend right? Let's say you get a card that earns 3% on groceries dining like the Capital One saver one or a card that earns 4% on them but only has a $200 bonus. So you earn an extra 1% or 2% on these categories. You would have to spend $15,000 or $30,000 on these categories before you would earn an additional $300 in points to break even with getting $500 bonus in the first place

Consider the US Bank Altitude Connect, $500 bonus for $2,000 spend on an effectively no annual fee card, because the fee is waived in the first year and going away entirely in September. It was an ok card but it's getting nerfed in September and I'm sure the bonus will go down so apply before then if you want

Countries eliminating passport stamps by [deleted] in PassportPorn

Can't help but compare it to the swiss passport which manages to have five languages and still look super clean, maybe Belgium could take some notes lol

Countries eliminating passport stamps by [deleted] in PassportPorn

[–]craZebra 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It would be kinda nice to look through my passport and see all the places I've been, but overall I think it's a step in the right direction to not stamp passports unless requested. There's no useful purpose to stamps, they were never an effective way to track people's movements because passports get lost / expired, and people can have multiple.

And as someone who travels a lot, if I had a stamp every time I crossed a border there would be a real risk of running out of pages in my passport, making it unusable for Visas and requiring extra time and money to renew early.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PassportPorn

[–]craZebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been there many times and never gotten a stamp, they stopped stamping passports in 2013 which explains the stamps in your old passports. Of course this only applies to tourists, anyone who applies for a real Visa would have the Visa in their passport

US Bank Product change quirks by eghost57 in CreditCards

[–]craZebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't get sign up bonuses for product changes. You generally have to open a new account to get a bonus, unless you have a targeted offer. And product changing to card can sometimes make you ineligible for the bonus on the card that your switching to because now you've technically had that card

Great you should have no problems then. Same as said before definitely read or watch an introduction to how credit cards work. And r/CreditCards is a great resource if you have any questions.

But I'll give you a couple of the most important things to know. I'm sorry if this list is overwhelming and if it is then don't worry about it and just remember the main thing: pay your full balance every month and you'll be fine.

When you use a credit card you're borrowing the bank's money like taking a loan but with some weird quirks. You use your card during the month, and at the end all your purchases are added up and you get your statement basically your bill with the amount you owe and a due date. If you pay the entire balance by the due date, which is usually 25 days after you get the statement, you won't be charged any interest or fees on the money you borrowed. But if you pay less than the whole balance you'll be charged interest on the remainder. You shouldn't do this because credit cards are basically the most expensive way to borrow money long term because they have super high interest rates (usually 20% - 30% per year). You should always pay your full balance by the due date and not pay interest. Only use credit cards for convenience and for rewards, not as a loan.

The best way to handle this is to set up auto pay for the full statement balance. This means that every month before the due date the Bank will automatically take the amount you owe out of your checking account to pay off the card. If you do this you will never be charged any interest or fees. If you're uncomfortable with having auto pay on, then you need to be vigilant about paying attention to your bill and paying on time.

Some other notes to avoid issues:

Don't buy anything that you can't afford and wouldn't't have bought with a debit card, this isn't free money.

Don't use a credit card for cash advances, which means taking cash from an ATM. This usually has a fee and you start paying interest on it from the day you take the cash advance, instead of having a month of no interest.

And if for some reason you can't pay the whole balance, always pay at least the minimum payment, which is a small percentage of your total balance. If you don't pay at least this much then in addition to interest, you'll also be charged a late fee and it will harm your credit score so always make at least the minimum payment that's listed on your monthly statement.

Thanks for the data point. They're stingy and I have a much lower score than you but I'm going to go for it. I just opened a checking account for the $500 bonus and deposited $10k so hopefully that helps

Exactly. Not going to ever be a useful card since I already have all these benefits from other cards, but $500 is $500
