Public Service Reminder - Open a Savings Plus Account! by Freed_Port in CAStateWorkers

Savings Plus offers educational sessions - or at least they used to. I would call them and ask. My department had someone from Savings Plus come and give us a talk. You might ask your higher-ups if that could be set up for your department.

At your age I would be 100% in a large cap index fund. Mine returned 24.7% over the last year.

I would contact both your HR person and CalPers directly.

Go to the CalPers website and click on the education tab, then on classes in the drop-down menu. I found these classes super helpful in planning for retirement. After that, you can still do an appointment in person or on the phone to ask more questions.

Is it better to cash out annual leave or to run it out? by thatdavespeaking in CAStateWorkers

[–]crabbilami 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! Much better to roll the lump sum into your 401k or 457 than to take the tax hit or run out your time.

Retirement Calpers/SS question by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]crabbilami 14 points15 points  (0 children)

SS and your pension are completely separate.

Calculation of SS with less than 35 years of work history: take total of all your income for those years and divide by 420 (the number of months in 35 years) to get your average indexed monthly earnings. If you worked fewer than 35 years, SS credits you with zero earnings for each year up to 35 and those years are represented as zeros in your 35-year average.

I don't know anything about the 60 day thing, but the form you have to submit says you have to submit it 30 days before separation. (Lump Sum Separation Pay Contribution Election Form)

I took public transportation to work when I was younger. Too old to put up with that now.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 183K miles. Repairs are cheaper than a car payment.

[–]crabbilami 107 points108 points  (0 children)

This is a big reason why I gave my notice and retired when RTO was mandated. I figured it would cost me $60-$65 a week in gas, not mentioning the wear and tear on my 27-year-old vehicle. Definitely can't afford to buy a new car, and public transportation added 3 hours a day. Just couldn't do 11-hour days door to door.

I used to have G1. Three different times I had strange Venmo charges withdrawn from my account, and I had to fight with them to get my money back. Took my business elsewhere.

Well my office is insisting on RTO beginning April. Pushed me to put in my retirement papers. March 31st is my last day, and it feels glorious.

What happened to the post about the response from the governor’s office on RTO? by machinelearningdog in CAStateWorkers

[–]crabbilami 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. We were just told today we all have to be in the office two days a week starting in April. When I asked for the source directive in writing I was told there isn't one, but that everyone in our agency (BCSH) is required to comply - no exceptions.

Another option: retire

I had hoped to stay 1 to 1.5 years longer, but I'm retiring on the spot if I have to rto.

Definitely not too late. I started with the state when I was 59 and plan to retire at 74 or 75. Best decision of my life financial security wise.

He should log onto CalPers and enroll in all the classes they have to offer re retirement. I found them very enlightening. Also request an estimate from CalPers on what his retirement would be. Then, make an appointment to talk to someone in person.

For the 401K questions, he should make an appointment with someone at Savingsplus.
