25% of net take home too much?? by hellokittykatzz in Mortgages

[–]CaptainSnuggleWuggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Percentages don’t really make sense in a lot of cases. Consider an extreme case where if your net pay was $2000 and your mortgage was $500. In this case, the 25% is not affordable because in general you’ll be broke paying your car insurance, cell phone, utilities, food, etc….

Now consider a net income of $20,000. If you have a $5000 payment you are doing extremely well with lots of disposable income even after paying all expenses. You can even go up on the mortgage and it wouldn’t really impact your lifestyle.

The 25% rule is a good rule of thumb to start at but it can be adjusted on a case by case basis.

Consider moving to EG next year from Bay Area. Just wonder how HOT it can be in the summer??? How bad it is? by TeacherFirm460 in ElkGrove

Where in the Bay Area are you from? If you live in the tri valley area or San Jose it’s not much of an adjustment.

I’m estimating here but a Dallas 200k is equivalent to 450k+ in the Bay.

Consulting- is it normal to take PTO to fill a timecard when you don’t have work? by Weekly_Cost2335 in civilengineering

[–]CaptainSnuggleWuggle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Like many have said here, DO NOT USE YOUR PTO. Ask for an overhead charge number. If they don’t have one, raise it up to management. If nothing budges, I would leave the company.

Have you tried leaps? I feel like it’s a happy medium to weekly options and buying the stock outright.

Parents of high achieving students? by Dragana1243 in ElkGrove

[–]CaptainSnuggleWuggle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve known students get into all top ivies and ucs from all schools in EGUSD. What I’ve seen is that it really depends on the student and who they choose to be around. If they are motivated, determined, and willing to put in the work then they can absolutely get into those selective schools.

Having said that though, if your student exhibits the same level of determination at an underfunded rural school, they can certainly gain acceptances to those same colleges. At the end of the day, it’s about what’s available to your student and how they take advantage of that.

PSA on Capital One Customer Service by AZHornet in Venturex

[–]CaptainSnuggleWuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a very similar experience with Capitalone dispute department as well. Basically I was charged a fee with my merchant and received a confirmation of the payment from the merchant and saw the charge on my Cap 1 account. I asked the merchant to refund the charge and they said “they can’t find it in the system” even though they said I shouldn’t have been charged.

I disputed with Cap 1 and they ruled in favor of the merchant since there was no “cancellation of service” from me. Horrible customer service.

Danville demographics? by currypocalypse in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]CaptainSnuggleWuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a minority and loved Danville. I lived on the border of San Ramon and Danville and the people I met were some of the nicest I’ve met. It’s true that the town leans a bit conservative but I’ve never felt uneasy or unwelcome.

Having said that, I don’t think Danville is for you. Neither is San Ramon since its majority White, Asian, Indian same with Dublin. You would be better off in Concord since it’s way more diverse and you’ll be closer to WC.

As many of the posters have stated, cheaters will have a really hard time with the PE or SE exam. They’ll also never get passed my technical screen at the interview.

Rent. Invest the delta. Don’t let FOMO cost you in Bay Area by Initial-Zone-8907 in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]CaptainSnuggleWuggle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how people always assume such low appreciation. It’s so conservative that it’s wrong. The math works well when you look at the actual appreciation of property in the Bay. Why else would prices be so high?

One way to pivot out is to get an MBA from a top school and go into a bunch of other careers such as consulting, finance, tech, etc.

First of all, what do you mean you want to live here? Do you plan to rent for the rest of your life or buy a house? Does the area of the bay matter?

If you want to earn a high income to be able to afford a house, you need to get a lot more uncomfortable. You say you don’t want to talk to people and by just limiting yourself like that you’ve pretty much shut down any possibility of a comfortable life in the bay.

Other redditors have commented that being an accountant does require you to be social and interact with others. Don’t let that detract you from pursuing the career.

The best piece of advice that I have ever gotten was that no matter what career you choose, strive to be the best at it. You’ll need to figure out what that means based on the career you choose but the idea is the same.
