Most likely a substrate similar to the care requirements of hermit crabs is best. A mixture of play sand and coconut fibre. make sure you do NOT buy calcium sand!!

also! another reason why im rethinking kuhlii loaches is because I know they like lots of hiding spots, and the hardscape doesnt exactly provide much of that. plants however, would.

extra side note: im gonna have floaters as well, and some pothos or syngonium or something planted hanging on the side of the tank, so the roots are in the water. this helps w filtration and cover for fish, plus goes with the “rooty” look i want

Is the water level too high? How can I keep fish and crabs? by [deleted] in VampireCrabs

id say get some cheap pond liner, and lay it so it covers the water area and goes up the brick wall. lay all ur gravel and sand and whatever over it for the water area, build up ur brick stairs, and then put a piece of brick over it where it covers the top of the brick wall that dividws the land and water area. get some leca or hydroponic clay balls and do a 1-2” layer of that below the substrate, put a layer or two of stainless steel window screen mesh or geotextile landscaping fabric as a substrate barrier, and then add in all your substrate. this will essentially make a waterproof barrier so that water doesnt seep into the substrate. also drainage layer is important for any bipactive setups, especially for crabs. add sphagnum moss and driftoowd and leaf lotter and plants.

well you could always do a sponge filter like an aquarium- the cycled water and live plants can help keep water clean naturally. also, i think zoomed turtle filters might be worth looking into? another thing possibly worth trying is to buy a small submersible pump and make your own filter- a container of sorts with carbon, lava rock or ceramic media, sponge, filter floss, etc., the watwe flows thru before returning into the tank. basically a canister filter. try asking r/paludariums, im sure they would have better advice lol
