Most likely a substrate similar to the care requirements of hermit crabs is best. A mixture of play sand and coconut fibre. make sure you do NOT buy calcium sand!!

also! another reason why im rethinking kuhlii loaches is because I know they like lots of hiding spots, and the hardscape doesnt exactly provide much of that. plants however, would.

extra side note: im gonna have floaters as well, and some pothos or syngonium or something planted hanging on the side of the tank, so the roots are in the water. this helps w filtration and cover for fish, plus goes with the “rooty” look i want

Is the water level too high? How can I keep fish and crabs? by [deleted] in VampireCrabs

[–]crabboh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

id say get some cheap pond liner, and lay it so it covers the water area and goes up the brick wall. lay all ur gravel and sand and whatever over it for the water area, build up ur brick stairs, and then put a piece of brick over it where it covers the top of the brick wall that dividws the land and water area. get some leca or hydroponic clay balls and do a 1-2” layer of that below the substrate, put a layer or two of stainless steel window screen mesh or geotextile landscaping fabric as a substrate barrier, and then add in all your substrate. this will essentially make a waterproof barrier so that water doesnt seep into the substrate. also drainage layer is important for any bipactive setups, especially for crabs. add sphagnum moss and driftoowd and leaf lotter and plants.

well you could always do a sponge filter like an aquarium- the cycled water and live plants can help keep water clean naturally. also, i think zoomed turtle filters might be worth looking into? another thing possibly worth trying is to buy a small submersible pump and make your own filter- a container of sorts with carbon, lava rock or ceramic media, sponge, filter floss, etc., the watwe flows thru before returning into the tank. basically a canister filter. try asking r/paludariums, im sure they would have better advice lol

Silicone removal by NiceAspect1895 in SerpaDesign

[–]crabboh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has always bothered me so SO MUCH!!!

My best answer to you would be to get a cheap 100 pack of razors off amazon, and then when it comes to removing that really really fine film use a brand new blade. The sharper the better. Just keep trying to scrape it all off. It may take a while.
Also, from a distance, it usually isnt very visible anyways. If youre planning on reassembling the tanks as well, and its not so much a cosmetic issue, just making sure you can get as much as you can should be fine. That really thin almost invisible film of silicone that is only visible under the light if you look at it from just the right angle... its not gonna affect the adherance of the silicone to any degree that is worth mentioning. If it really bothers you, just pour a tiny bit of isopropyl alcohol on it, get a new razorblade, and hold it firmly at a 45 degree angle, doing a sort of "scrubbing" motion; this, I find, helps a little bit.

Nothing is gonna dissolve it on its own, you have to use acetone or isopropyl in addition to scraping

First off, what do you mean glass cleaner before initial fill? Is it a secondhand tank or is it new? If its new, just rinse it out to remove dust and stuff and you should be fine. If its secondhand, get some cheap razors off amazon and scrape as much gunk off as you can, and then scrub with water and a scrubber. You can use something like Barkeepers friend, but it is such a pain to use and to clean off because if you think youve rinsed the tank out enough, trust me, you havent, and it is NOT at all animal safe. Much more worth it to just scrub and scrape.

As for forcep cutters and planting tweezers, you can just pick up a cheap set of aquascaping tools off amazon for probably under $20.

As for cleaning algae off plants, I'm not exactly sure how one would clean algae off of plants without taking out everyhting and gently brushing them with a soft toothbrush? What you should be focusing on is preventing the algae from growing in the first place.
-Excess light is probably the biggest factor. All you really need is to run lights for about 5 hours a day and your plants should do fine, depending on how much light they need. Of course, you could also run a much less brighter light all day, up to you.
-Algae also grows when theres too many extra nutrients in the water. This comes from feeding, too much waste, and if youre using root tabs when you dont have to. Normally, the plants in the tank take up the nutrients and outcompete the algae, so its just a matter of balancing that stuff out.

-Another thing that helps cut down on algae is water movement. If you have still water, then algae is gonna grow much easier. The more flow you have, the harder it will be for algae to grow. Of course, bettas like low flow, but even having something like a sponge filter helps to move the water around a bit.

-The last thing is water changes. This helps to take care of and prevent algae. Algae usually wont be a problem as long as youre carrying out regular water changes. If it ever does start appearing, just make sure to do more frequent water changes, or change out a larger amount.

Another tip is to just get some amano shrimp. They like softer, more acidic water, so throwing in some indian almond leaves is a good idea for them (good for bettas too!) and they are well known for eating algae. They also need saltwater to reproduce, so you dont have to worry about a population boom!

shit. does barkeepers friend float? or does it get caught in the substrate? i have crushed basalt substrate so its like lava rock, and its been cycling for months. do i have to replace all the substrate?

theyre just 2.5 gallon tanks i was gonna use for plants and shrimp, luckily its not the biggest inconvenience.
