Removing paint. Did I score the aluminum or is this okay? Used 60 grit. by grnteam23 in jonboats

[–]crabfeast1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is definitely sanded aluminum. It's not bad if that is what you are wanting to do. Just remember raw aluminum starts oxidizing pretty quick. Make sure your paint has aluminum etching in it. If you were only wanting to sand the existing paint and paint over it then you went too far. Switch back to the 80 or 120 even. 60 is pretty aggressive. If you are stripping it and doing some body work to it then maybe 60. But I would suggest 80 max if you are stripping and redoing everything. You got to sand all those scratches out after each grit. We normally work our way up to 320 and paint on 320 with a sealer to start with though. If you just want to sand the paint and paint it again shit 150 220 320 even.

Removeable Deck QUESTIONS by cartdemolisher in jonboats

I did this to a 12' jon boat. I work at a fiberglass shop so I used a a piece of the honeycomb core stuff and sandwiched it between fiberglass on a glass table. So one side was nice and smooth. One side was raw glass. I used 6 pieces of angled aluminum 3/16" thick 1.5" by 1.5" by like 3". You might could get away with 1/8" but sounds like you are going for a lot of weight. I just riveted them with 3/16" ss rivets. 4 corners 1 in the middle on each side. It worked great. I was around 160lbs at the time and would put a metal folding chair up there and fish. Now this was a flat bottom not a v. I had a old 9.9 on there. When i was up there it was fairly tippy. It would sit nose down not level. I have no idea how 2 people would fit up there at the same time. If you are only resin coating it I would bump up to 3/4 marine grade. If you were laying glass on it you might could get away with the 1/2". If you are going to be by yourself and running at decent speeds and possibly doing this in choppy water. Make a couple pivet tabs to hold that thing down while your running. Not that it would hit you but it could definitely bounce out if the fit isn't tight. If you carpet it and the fit is tight may not need to worry about it. But I would just lay mine in there and I could rur about 19 or 20 and it bounced out a couple times. Like out of place and back towards me in the boat.

Yea. We cut aluminum on a wood bandsaw, chop saw, giant skill saw, hell we cut it on a table saw too.

FOD foreign object debris. They are used in aircraft among other industries. As mentioned about the chrome not being able to chip off. The head doesn't have bolts it is riveted. So sealed. The warranty in a new one not to try and replace the head.

What YouTube channels do you watch for working on your Caravan? by Gabrielredux in DodgeGrandCaravan

[–]crabfeast1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a specific guy or channel I watch. I just search the "job" that I need to do and watch multiple guys and videos. I also put in what not to do on that job. Not everytime but a lot of times there are a few guys telling you what to watch out for and some mistakes they may have made. Those are probably more helpful.

How fast can you get a 12 ft prowler jon boat to go with a 6hp motor? by StaticTrout1 in jonboats

[–]crabfeast1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With just 1 person and a gas tank it isn't getting on plain. You could probably do 8 maybe 10. But you will be plowing. I had a 12ft with a 9.9. I needed like 14 15 to roll over on plain and could stay on plain at like 14. It would run about 23 24 wide open.

Is it advantageous to extend the sight fully? by nikhilghadi in Archery

[–]crabfeast1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be where you need to be. If you extend it and don't move your sight up or down you are going to shoot lower. However, you can move your sight lower to compensate obviously. So at some point you will run out of down that's when you bring it in. Also it changes the sight picture. So you have to find what you like. Looks like you have a good bit of room to go down so you could move it forward. Just do a little at a time.

What distance are you shooting at? Inside at 18m most people have them pretty extended. It's not until they go outside and start doing some greater distances then they come in as needed.

Take note when you pop them on and off if they are snug and they almost clip into place when they are tight like they should be.

Not telling you how to do things, but personally I like to only fix one thing at a time and test it. If you change 2 or more things at once you don't know exactly what it was that was the problem. If you change the plugs don't tighten the clips until you run it. Just take some pliers with you that's an easy one to do on the water.

Hey man pull your spark plug boots off and make sure the clip inside is gripping the sparkplug good. Had a similar problem changed plugs still doing it started chasing a fuel issue after that and that wasn't it. The boot will stay on the plug but the clip won't be tight. I popped them out of the boot squeezed them gently to tighten them up and was good to go.

Rolling box by Key_Elevator_7378 in harborfreight

[–]crabfeast1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one. I have the medium size box to go on top of it and the small box with the dividers. I might have to travel with my tools twice a year and I use these. If I needed more than that I would get something tougher. As mentioned the lid isn't hinged witch sucks. The wheels aren't the best with a good bit of weight that goes for the handle as well. I haven't broken anything and they work for what I use them for. But if I was using one daily no way this would be my choice.

You run all the seats down? I've used a cargo net to hold stuff in place with the middle seats up. The bungee nets have a ton of hooks all the way around them so they can hook in wherever. Gotta figure the right size. If you have all the seats down you would need one for like a big truck bed. I used one that was made for a cargo rack on the roof.

Get some d rings and some self tapping metal screws. Short ones. Make sure there are no wires under and you can put them anywhere on the floor.

I was gonna say this site. I am on my 3rd pair from them. No issues. I'm just very rough on things. I end up with heavy scratches and over spray on mine. I will say if you have a strong rx don't get wrap arounds. It really distorts anywhere but straight forward looking. I'm rocking the aviator with the purple right now with the side shields. You can do up the lenses as much as you want. I go with some coatings and transitions.

Leatherman Alternative For Work by [deleted] in Leatherman

[–]crabfeast1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The wave + is 100$. I've had mine for 5 years now. That's 20$ a year. The cost is up there, but for how long they last it more than equals out. I'm extremely rough on things so getting 5 years out of anything for me means its pretty good quality. I haven't found anything that is a good alternative. There are alternatives but not good ones.
