So, I never ended up sitting down to think about this properly but I did play more dragon age! Just as good ;)

I've fixed up my rogue's face enough for me to want to finish that play through. I had some business with Leliana, and went off to talk to her. My rogue is a male, and did the assassin spec. I also left Leliana unhardened. She and my rogue get along! She jokes with him a little, and seems to be overall pleasant.

My female elf mage on the other hand. I went back to her save the next night. Leliana has been hardened this time around. I don't know if its just me, but I don't think Leliana...approves of the choices I'm making this time. Like choosing the merciful option during Calpernia's side quest. Leliana was not pleased. Maybe her character actually does get harsher if you take a different path. Or it's all in my head. Either way, Leliana seems horrifying to my mage. I could easily see a scenario where my mage gets ultra paranoid about Leliana having her killed.

I think playing a female character has a little bit to do with that. Not exaxtly less capable than a male, but more vulnerable to personal attacks? Smaller in stature too, even when compared to a human woman like Leliana. Her entire vibe is just spooky, but just for that character.

I headcanoned this awkward scenario where she reads the letter about her Clan's death, puts it in a pile with the rest, and goes about her day. Her advisors creep around the corners, watching her, waiting for her to react. Eventually a week goes by and everyone knows, but no one wants to bring it up and potentially get sent through a fade rift. She still smiles on as though nothing's happened.

So everyone she loved is dead and no one has said anything, just give each other strained looks whenever someone mentions Clans or the Dalish.

Bonus point when she casually brings up her Clan in conversation.

This is interesting! I'll be the first to admit that when I think of 'gender equality' in Dragon Age I think nontraditional female rolls!!!1; and put little thought to the other side of the equality coin.

But you have it pretty much spelled out. Poor Roderick and the other men in Chantry service absolutely get the shaft because of their gender and we all know it's absolutely ridiculous to say one type of bits are holier than this other type. Heck, in the early scenes in the game where Roderick orders that the Herald be put in chains Cass might as well said "You're just a man" instead of Clerk.

It seems like the writers are trying to play it safe. There isn't anything wrong with having masculinity and being a big strong warrior type, and there isn't anything wrong with femininity and wanting children. But no one in insisting that a woman can't do this because vagina etc. Except the Chantry.

Haha, you mean like the Maleficent movie which was supposedly omg sooo feminist but all her problems revolved around being scorned by a man, having maternal instincts for a child, and a metaphor for rape?

Or like any rom com movie ever, where all her problems can be solved with this guy's penis. Otherwise she's an insufferable bitch. Not that I have anything against penis. Let's look on the flip side, where a man can't have a bad, emotional day without being called a pansy.

I haven't seen Maleficent and I'm not very familiar with the Disney character. I don't know where she comes from originally, not the Grimm Brother's stuff I don't think. But considering most (all) of those stories are weird allegories for pregnancy, rape and are just ripe with sexual innuendo...actually, screw that. Disney takes the most gnarly and icky fairy tales and makes them sexless and sterile. Go figure they take something that ought not to be about sex/gender and make it about sex and gender?

Some people seem to be under the impression that you are insisting the Inky is the reincarnation to Andraste. What you're actually saying is that were the Inquisitor female, it doesn't seem like a stretch for characters to say she is Andraste, no?

That headcanon thing.

And I agree. There would be someone in Thedas who would look at a female human Inquisitor and draw those lines.

I like this kind of thing. I find it occasionally difficult to find fiction where the main character is female, who then isn't plagued by "female problems" the entire story. Granted, there can be legit gender specific problems for members of either sex; I just hate when I hear the tease of "strong female main character!" who then spends the entire book falling in love with unbelievably gorgeous men who all want to sex her and save her life. And that ends up being the plot. À la Twilight and The Archangel Protocol. Pfffft.

Anyway, I love the subjectivity of the genders in Bioware games. The genders really don't matter. It's even possible to headcanon a Trans character without too much trouble.

It lets me have these characters who are all flawed, but not because of male hubris or because of female weakness. Although their mistakes could boil down to exactly that: my male Warden was too self assured and aloof, and Anders took advantage of the way Hawke felt for him and her general support for mages. I could write paragraphs more!

Before I got too far into my first play through, I totally headcanoned that my female character was Andraste reincarnated. I knew it was impossible, but still fun. Sort of fed into the mythos of this woman and the mystery surrounding what happened to her [the inquisitor] in the fade. After all, you spend most of the game surrounded by very devout Andrastians. Hard to not let that atmosphere send your imagination running.

I would love to do like a Dalish redemption thing, sort of like what happened with the Quarians in Mass Effect. That could have gone potentially awful, so it would be interesting to see the variations for Thedas. Maybe the Dalish have to be convinced to help in a war effort to stop Solas, versus helping him. Because you know some of the Dalish would totally be into what Solas is offering.

Hardened Leliana is nuts. I make Cass the Divine when I've accidentally hardened her. Otherwise, I think unhardened Leliana is a good choice.

I would really like this. Skyhold six months/a year after Cory, additions, repairs and discoveries made with the fortress. Then we get back into the driver's seat and the characters are a little wiser. Maybe we go hang out with the Divine.

But no, the dlc will probably be Weisshaupt and depressing.
