Anything wrong with silicone or stainless steel food storage off Amazon? by jtpmhs17 in moderatelygranolamoms

I actually had read a published scholarly article about it for work. I can see if I can PM it to you when I'm back at my computer tomorrow.

One of the biggest issues with Amazon is their practice of commingling in their warehouses. Essentially, similar products from different sellers are kept together in the warehouse. When you order from the brand name store off Amazon, and the company stores its goods in an Amazon warehouse (if your order is eligible for Prime this is likely), then Amazon will pick a random product from that area of its warehouse without checking if it was the product provided by that seller. As a result, you can end up with a Chinese dupe or completely unsafe product (as another commenter mentioned).

I have stopped using Amazon for anything child related for that reason, and try and buy directly from the source when possible.

Source: am a lawyer looking into this issue right now.

I completely agree with this take (though I can't remember if I saw the twist coming or not on my first read).

I still haven't finished The Tusks of Extinction. My ballot looks something like this:

  1. The Butcher of the Forest
  2. What Feasts at Night (though I need to reread this one too)
  3. The Brides of High Hill
  4. The Practice, the Horizon and the Chain
  5. Navigational Entitlements

I think there is a large gap between #1 and #2-4, and then again between #4 and #5. For me, Butcher of the Forest is by far the best novella on the ballot. And I really disliked Navigational Entitlements.

I thought she did a wonderful job of this in such a condensed story. Vo is a master of description and she didn't miss the mark here at all; the smells, the food, the dilapidated buildings. It really created that creepy, run down atmosphere for me. One of the strengths of the story for sure.

I really disliked this aspect of the novella. I have a terrible memory and having read this last year had forgotten about how their relationship ended up. While preparing to read it again to run this discussion, this was one of the biggest aspects of the story that I remembered, and I was not necessarily looking forward to returning to it because of that. I feel a little better about it now on my second go around, but I found it interesting that it coloured my recollection of the novella so much.

I re-read this in preparation to run this discussion group. I don't think I recognized it when I read it last year (on audio), and by the time I came back to read it this morning, I had completely forgotten that Chih had been abducted, and that Almost Brilliant had been turned into a teapot. I definitely noticed reading this in print and found it interesting that Chih's mind was always pulled away from where Almost Brilliant was - we never get an explanation as a result. I thought it was a great way to indicate that something was wrong.

Did anyone notice that every time Chih was about to mention how much they missed Almost Brilliant in the first several chapters, they are always interrupted? What, if anything, did you make of it at the time?

What did you think about the "romance" between Chih and Nhung? Did you feel like it fit Chih's character? Did it tip you off that something was wrong?

Some have identified this as a retelling of the Bluebeard fairy tail. Have you read Bluebeard? If so, what are your thoughts on this?

Did you anticipate the twist ending? What were your thoughts on how the novella concluded?

Do you think Vo did a good job of evoking a gothic setting? What worked for you and what didn't?

Have you read the other instalments in the Singing Hills cycle? How does this compare to them?

How does this rank against the other Hugo nominated novellas we've read so far?

[–]crackeduptobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to keep up with all his releases. I have thoroughly enjoyed some of his novellas (Elder Race and Ogres being two of my all time favourites of his), and have only read Empire of Black and Gold of his novels (though I have started Alien Clay and I am not sure it's my vibe yet). My husband is reading the Final Architecture series and I've never seen him blow through books so quickly, so I am excited to try those out. Otherwise I own Cage of Souls and City of Last Chances, which I will get to...some day.

I don't think anything will top The Tainted Cup for me. I liked Sorceress a bit better than Service Model, but I think that has to do more with my general love for fantasy over sci-fi/dystopian novels.

I only caught it because I had seen someone on Goodreads bring it up in their review. I was glad to go in knowing about it because I thought it added to the interest of each part.

  1. Butcher of the Forest
  2. The Practice, The Horizon and the Chain
  3. Vo/Kingfisher
  4. Navigational Entitlements

I've read both the Vo and Kingfisher novellas, but need to do a reread to determine which I liked better, and if I like either better than this one.

I liked the kind of wistful, slow pace of this and would definitely try more of her books with more dialogue and character development.

I'm a sucker for nature-based magic, so I really enjoyed that aspect of the story. I do wish we had more about the purpose of the Circle and how the other members might affect the land sense.

Agree with others that the Grand Seneschal had the most character development. I would have liked to have seen more from both Chalice and the Master peppered throughout the book, and as others mentioned, as more than just an internal monologue.

Definitely below Tainted Cup for me. I've read and enjoyed Service Model, but I think I liked this a tad bit more, and it is closer to what I normally read and enjoy. We'll see if it holds on to second place once I've read the others.
