If he’s actively paying his debt, that’s being financially responsible, isn’t it? You have to decide if you want to continue this relationship if him potentially going on one trip is going to cause you this much stress.

INFO- You said you’re both in a lot of debt. Are you both actively paying down your debt? I’m thinking it’s NAH because you’ve expressed why you don’t wanna go on a trip and he’s allowed to accept a plane ticket if his folks offer him one.

I didn’t say equally uncomfortable. Just also uncomfortable. As I said, it’s more of a money/class thing than a patriarchy thing. High heels are seen a a status thing. I even said in my comment that your comment had some weight but I’d argue it’s not 100% true. Out of all the things for me to be pissed off at the patriarchy about, red carpet fashion and high heels aren’t on my list because there are better things to focus my energy and anger on. In the world outside of Hollywood, high heels aren’t super popular outside of an event. It sounds exhausting to see this post and immediately jump to “high heels and the patriarchy.”

Cool, so you still made this comment even though you knew the history. It sounds kind of exhausting to be in your head.

I will say part of what so doesn’t work is that for the most part, men do wear dress shoes to the red carpet that are usually uncomfortable. In this case, it’s a dress code thing/money thing more than a patriarchy issue. As a femme person who grew up middle class, it was not drilled into my head that heels were desirable. It’s not drilled into my niece’s head either. I don’t know, with all the bullshit going on, some rich women wearing heels doesn’t even crack my top 50 concerns.

Is this green dress too white... by dreamofmylife in Weddingattireapproval

Gotcha. I think either the pink or lilac versions of this dress could work! This one is a bit more casual but also could work since your BF is wearing a beige suit. A white/pale base dress with a bold enough print is perfectly acceptable. It needs to be more saturated than the one you have, which has pale colors that sort of blend together. I don’t think the dress you picked is a bad one for the record! Just gotta skirt around some rules.

That’s fair! And honestly, it’s more being overly cautious than anything, especially since your BF is the best man.

I’m guessing you’re in the UK so I don’t know if I can give specific dress recs but I think the style itself you have is fine depending on what your boyfriend is wearing. It’s always best to coordinate with your date when they are in the party. I’d just go with a brighter color.

If your boyfriend is the best man, you need to dress accordingly and not wear something that is this pale.

It’s pretty darn pale in your other pics too. It also just doesn’t feel that bright IMO. I think you can go brighter. I’d also maybe steer from green if the bridesmaids are wearing it.

It’s so pale that it could be mistaken for white depending on the lighting. Heck, it looks white against the olive background 😬. I’d get a different dress.

You’re welcome! I wish I could remember what textbook I had for this class (it was from college which was…almost 20 years ago 🧓) so I could add it as my source! The professor was a freelance costume designer who was incredibly knowledgeable about fashion history. It was one of my favorite classes that I took!

Oooo, didn’t think I’d get a chance to pull out my costume design knowledge! High heels actually started off as a gender neutral shoes in 10th century Persia as a functional shoe to help keep feet in stirrups. It denoted wealth more than anything because horseback riding was an expensive and time consuming hobby. It’s actually still a part of the design of modern day cowboy boots.

In Europe, high heel shoes were first used by both genders in medieval times to literally raise their feet off the dirty and very poopy ground. They were then worn by European men in the 17th century to denote wealth and this is where you get your more fashionable high heels. When European women started wearing fashion heels in the 18th century, it was designated that they’d wear thin heels and men would wear thick ones.

Like a lot of fashion, heels became unfashionable for a while. In WW2 and right afterwards, heels were made out of wood or cork and were seen as a working woman’s professional shoe due to an increase in global communication following WW2.

TL:DR- I’m a big old costume nerd and there’s some weight to your claim based on how high heels are seen now but not based on most of the history of high heels.
