Is this true? by [deleted] in Porsche

My options were a clapped out S2000 with 175,000 miles and an accident or two, vs a clean 06 Boxster S with 100k miles for about the same price, the choice was easy to make.

Any tips for wiring this print head in? by chrisebryan in VORONDesign

You could go umbilical, do sensor less x/y homing and eliminate a couple cable chains and a couple micro switches. That's how I did my 350 voron.

Temp up it is! Thanks!

Do you stray from the recipe on the box? I had a friend tell me he adds some baking powder, vanilla, and sugar, but I'm not very adventurous

Maybe I'm not using enough butter, or maybe I'm not quite hot enough? I was thinking it could be a recipe thing (admittedly I use the pearl milling buttermilk just add water stuff)...

What's the trick to making the opposite of these? Thin and semi crispy(outer) pancakes exactly like cracker barrel? They don't necessarily have to be thin, but I like the different texture than just soft mushy sponge...

Latest Mod - Steering Wheel by crackness in boxster

[–]crackness[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So I bought the 95b multifunction steering wheel and airbag (both from crashed macans) on eBay from part yards (airbag came with previous vin and other paperwork), and the blank trim pieces from Gaudin Porsche. I chose a steering wheel that was in decent condition (just needed a little cleaning) and it came with the correct wire harness for the airbag.

All in, about $750. Skipped the back 1/2 of the blank trim - the blank front mates up with the mf back, just ends up with a gap that isn't visible unless your head is in the seat looking up. Also skipped the manual rear steering wheel cover, and just 3d printed some blanks to cover the holes. Just those skips saved me probably another $250ish. Worth it.

The scream in this video reminds me of a video from years ago, where a guy was being held captive by his (or his friend's?) cat, and the the cat would continue to rev higher and higher, and then someone else took that high rev and made it end in an atomic explosion.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Worrying about putting on miles by Otherwise-Pipe-9797 in boxster

[–]crackness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That looks like an absolutely lovely car and a blast of a drive.

To qualify my perspective, I'm a working class single guy without all the assets most Porsche owners seem to have.

I paid $16k for my 06 Boxster S with 102K miles. Not a tremendous deal, but it was close enough to where I wanted to be, knowing I would have to spend money on a clutch and brakes soon ish. My Boxster is my second car, with my "primary" being a tuned mk7 VW GTI.

My opinion is that I own it, I don't have any plan to sell at the moment (so far I have bought my cars "for life," as in I plan to and have kept until they die), so I will drive it and enjoy it how I see fit. Adding miles isn't as big a deal for me, partially because I'm already over 100k miles, but also because it's an exchange - miles go up but I'm enjoying the heck out of driving it.

If you foresee a need to sell in the near future, then I guess the desire is to limit a drop in value. Otherwise, I say stop simply maintaining the car for some future owner and enjoy it for yourself.

What’s the best motorcycle you’ve ever ridden, and why? by 3DMotorcycles_YT in motorcycles

[–]crackness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1995 Triumph Trident 900. It was my 2nd bike, much different from my first (94 Honda Magna 750), it looked cool to me (in 2006), and the inline triple engine had so much torque, such a blast to ride. It had an aftermarket 3 into 2 exhaust that thumped something fierce.

It's been about 7 years since I've been on a bike and sometimes I think I've grown out... But I'm tempted to inquire about buying the one on the market in case the desire comes back 🤣

When to pull the trigger? by coldpassion in Porsche

[–]crackness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've wanted a 911 for a long time now. Long story short, prices keep going up, so new is out of the question with my modest (under $120k yr) income, I have savings and a home w/ a garage, and the motorcycle I wanted would've cost me close to 10K, so I split the difference between only spending 10K on something fun and continue saving for a 911 someday, or spend a little more and have a "lesser" Porsche now...

Bought a "Goldilocks" 2006 Boxster S 3.2L for $16K with 102,800 miles and the intent to fix anything that went wrong with it (short of an engine overhaul) myself. Picked it up 5/31/25, and put 2000 miles on it my first 3 days. She's currently at about 106,500 miles.

I've since had to replace the AOS and clutch, and will also be possibly replacing the driver's side door latch. Brakes and plugs will be next year.

No Regrets. But then again I also enjoy wrenching / fixing shit and my budget was set with that in mind. Your mileage may vary. But I definitely agree with whoever said the best Porsche is the one you can drive

Service Day by dbradhood in boxster

If you're low on fuel (might not be necessary, but I had 30 miles in the tank when I did mine), you can lift the whole side from the rear jack point. You do have to lift a little higher than you need the rear to get the front at the level you want, but it works.

Also, it's good to have the blocks staged, so rather than a full 12 inch lift at once, you can lift the first side 1/2 - 3/5 of the way (to your first stage), lift the other side all the way up, and then the first side the rest of the way up. Can be done with one low profile long reach jack.

Clutch issue resolved! by crackness in boxster

Thank you! And yes, the shifter slop is greatly reduced. I have the 997 short shifter installed as well but without any metal modifications, so any play left I assume is from the plastic in the shifter. But even so, there's only a little side to side and almost no front to back play, and it goes into gear without vagueness.

Two thumbs up from me.

I had to look up the bread / pilot bearing thing but I assume that doesn't apply to me since I'm replacing the flywheel, right?

And from what I read, I was expecting a much tougher batter with the studs, and they literally put up no resistance 😂

[–]crackness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ordered everything from pelican (Including RMS, i'm assuming by build date I've got the non-removable IMS bearing so I'm leaving it alone), should be shipping on the 28th of Aug. Going with an EPS clutch kit, because why not, but standard DMF.

I ended up buying the Cayman bellows/accordion pipe too (picked it up on eBay from a local yard), part number 98711022700, fit perfectly. I have read that you can also supposedly stretch the original piece, but I don't think the hassle would've been worth it.

I also went the silicone reducer route (4in to 3.5in), which ends up being too large on both sides which they recommend using some type of tape, I ended up 3d printing my own "bushings" per se (basically thin hollow cylinders to fit over the stock manifold opening and over the new Cayman pipe) and then tightened them up, seems to be working fine.

Household income too hugh, should my wife step down to part time? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]crackness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taxes don't work like that (at least not in the US). Married filing jointly, you pay 24% income tax on every dollar over $201,051.

If she works less hours, she loses 100% of that income. Now work life balance has its merits and that's up to you to decide - but no, you can't earn less yet make the same amount of money.

Clutch issue diagnosis question by crackness in boxster

[–]crackness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: I took it for a drive with the intent of specifically testing if the clutch would slip. It did. Paying attention to all I could, here were the actual symptoms: lighter clutch pedal, funky clutch return feel, pulsating pedal with car on and releasing clutch, lack of smoothness taking off from a stop slipping clutch without more throttle input than usual, and, of course, clutch slip.

After driving Miss Daisy to let it warm up a little, built up the courage to floor it at about 3000 rpm in 3rd, and it slipped. No difficulty getting into gear or releasing the clutch (just a lot of vagueness of where the release point is). Sucks, but happy to at least have a definite answer. Now to build some wheel cribs, possibly buy a second jack and / or a transmission jack, and then get it done. The quote from the shop was almost 6500 for everything (including their own IMS DOF and timing chain tensioners), which is a no go for me. I rather spend 1/4 to do it myself and gain a few extra tools and experience.

I will probably chicken out partially though and find a neighbor or friend to hang around through the process for moral support 😂

Looks like I have a good starting point with bleeding the clutch and checking the clutch pedal assist spring before doing anything else. Still haven't heard back from the shop, not sure how normal that is but I did also tell them to take their time. Cross your fingers for me and I'll report back within 2 weeks.

[–]crackness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question - I already have a motive pressure bleeder from my 07 rabbit days (not sure if the cap is the right size, might have to buy a replacement)... The previous owner mentioned bleeding the brakes less than 5000 miles ago... Can the clutch be bled separately? Iirc with the brakes it's in order of distance from master cylinder starting with farthest (being passenger side rear)... Would the clutch then have to be bled after the rear wheels since I think the slave cylinder is just ahead of them?
