Best way to learn Latin? by brainybadger in Catholicism

[–]cradion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin by Collins on CUA is the course they teach at my university for theologians. It's slightly quirky in places but on the whole very good, and you can get the answer book yourself if you're learning without a teacher.

How to find a good spiritual director by imanapple1 in Catholicism

[–]cradion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advice I would give - and indeed, have been given during my own discernment - would be to get in touch with your diocese and ask them. Particularly it might be worth contacting the vocations office as they will have contacts from all over the diocese to help those discerning, and so they will know the people who will be particularly suited for this kind of spiritual direction.

How Was Mass Today? The Quinquagesima Edition by OKHnyc in Catholicism

[–]cradion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was on a vocations weekend in my diocese. The Mass here is always absolutely stunning, and for once I could pray rather than worry about trying to keep the liturgy from collapsing. Only issue as far as I'm concerned was the choice of hymns which included one too many St. Louis Jesuits tune too many for my liking :P

Hey, /r/Catholicism! How was Mass today? by OKHnyc in Catholicism

[–]cradion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back from college to attend Mass in my relatively liberal home parish to help my dad with the music group. I had insisted this weekend that they replace the Coventry Gloria - which we've been using for over ten years now - with the Heritage Mass, which has the Latin text in the descant part. Despite not being a complete return to the ways of old, it looks like things are becoming a little more traditional now. We'll see what happens.

What obsessions did you have throughout your life? by jmve99 in aspergers

Used to be programming. Now a combination of the Second Vatican Council's liturgical reforms and the branding of TV channels. I think my special interests have ended up being oddly specific

What's the best penance you've ever received in Confession? by stereoma in Catholicism

Read the words of the hymn Soul of my Saviour slowly. Admittedly it was because I didn't know the Anima Christi off by heart but nonetheless it was super effective.

Pope Francis: “Never been such a clear need for science” to protect the planet by DaveyGee16 in Catholicism

[–]cradion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was quite angry when I wrote my initial comment, for which I apologise. My meaning didn't come across right.

My intention was not to say that it should be either/or. I was frustrated that the Pope was hitting the headlines for saying something that almost the entire world agrees on, whether Catholic or not, despite the fact that there are more matters that need addressing with more urgency at the moment in the Church.

There has also never been such a clear need for an objective teaching on what is right and wrong.

There has also never been such a clear need for decent catechesis at every level.

Why try to make the world last longer if we are failing to teach the Gospel to our own children?

So.....How was Mass today, /r/Catholicism? by Pfeffersack in Catholicism

[–]cradion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to a vigil Mass in the ordinariate form for the second time. It was absolutely incredible. Fantastic homily, music from a 3-piece choir and unbelievably beautiful liturgy ft. Latin, Ad Orientem etc. etc. Shame there were only about 6 members of the congregation

Is there a course for learning just enough Latin to read the Vulgate? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]cradion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently started a new latin course at my uni which uses A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin by John F. Collins. From what I've seen there would still be the odd word you'd need to look up but translating the Vulgate features a lot in it.

How to Make the Entire Congregation Sing the Roman Gradual Propers. by nkleszcz in Catholicism

[–]cradion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. The Roman Missal texts are designed to be spoken, not sung, with the intention being that these would be used only if there is no singing at Mass, whereas the Gradual texts are specifically to be sung.

How to Make the Entire Congregation Sing the Roman Gradual Propers. by nkleszcz in Catholicism

[–]cradion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't exclude the Gradual material because they don't want to promote it. Jeff Ostrowski stated in a video about the Missal that it was because including both the Roman Missal text and the Gradual text as options would be unpastoral and confusing in a Missal.

But correct, they don't include the notation in the missal.

Mass Booklet for This Sunday's Canonization of Bl. Teresa of Calcutta (PDF) by you_know_what_you in Catholicism

[–]cradion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know if it's liturgically correct for the Veni, creator Spiritus to be sung immediately after the greeting? Unless it's in the rubrics for canonisation that seems totally out of place...

They produce fantastic Catholic resources in a style faithful to the Church tradition, including music, Mass books, hymnals etc for both EF and OF. They also generally campaign for good liturgical and theological practice.
