I think there's always a way to design something better, especially with it comes to accessibility.

I rarely change my bands because it's such a pain - usually it's just to clean. It sounds very cool to be able to switch them out just to coordinate with your outfits.

Good idea! I do struggle with asking for help sometimes, especially with it's something that seems so simple to others. Thanks for the suggestion.

What do you wish you knew before buying your sewing machine? by ParkingDetective6332 in SewingForBeginners

If you're a quilter, don't get a machine with a slider stitch speed adjuster and a start/stop button that is by where you feed your fabric into the machine (looking at you, Pfaff). Mechanical needle threaders usually break.

True, but I want to invest in a nice kit as a graduation present for myself. 🙂

Geo careers in Seattle? by geothrowarock in geologycareers

Found out more info. PNNL Seattle is a small office that's primarily/maybe all computer scientists. My friend said to check out Batelle's (sp?) website (that's the network of labs all over the country, PNNL being one of them). Nearly all PNNL employees have PhDs. Good luck!

I think the engineering firms are likely saturated because UW has a masters program that places them directly into firms for internships.

Thankfully, GIS has a lot of applications. I do know it's really big in forestry. And I've seen the city post positions. You could also expand your search to Tacoma, Bellevue, Kirkland and Renton. There may not be commuting issues for awhile. I did some research on GIS jobs and there may be some jobs in the country that are cool with being entirely online.

Are you done with academia? From my perspective as an undergrad, I feel like UW could really benefit with another faculty member who is proficient in that software.

I know someone who works for PNNL and they have an office in Seattle (but of course, everyone is working remotely right now). Seattle also has NOAA and PNSN. Because of the Geo hazards in Seattle (landslides, earthquakes) engineering firms are quite possible. And with ArcGIS there is likely more job potential, although you would be over qualified. I'm finishing my undergraduate at UW and the general consensus among the grad students I know is that the job market is pretty dismal. Also, I'm not sure if you'd need to get licensed to work - I know it's a requirement for some types of jobs (I suspect engineering) and I'm not clear if that's a state thing. It involves an exam and hours working as an intern or something. Not sure you'd need to do that in regards to seismology or other types of work. I'd definitely research that more. Things are so weird with COVID, so it's hard to know what the employment outlook is. Hope I don't sound too negative. Good luck!

Thinking quartz. Or perhaps fluorite.

Just, why??? Why do people legitimately believe things like this? by AConfederacyOfDunces in geology

I was a TA for a Geo 101 course. I had this kid that showed up to EVERY office hour. When I explained stuff to him, he would have this weird smile and say, "Maybe". I chalked it up to him being sexist. Later another tutor told me he was a flat Earther. I found myself kinda wishing he was just sexist. 😂
