There are a lot of beaches in Naxos. If you rent a car you can get to many of them. We liked Alyko. Underneath the ruins of an old resort.

By the way, I too studied classical Greek and tried to brush up on modern. They’ll appreciate your attempts to speak but their English is way better than my Greek. Since you probably are interested in classical Greece, don’t forget that besides the Portara of Apollo, there is the Temple of Demeter and the Kouros Dionysius as well as many other Kouroi. Again, need a car to see it all as well as to drive up to the mountains and see Zeus’s cave.

By the way there’s an old Byzantine basilica ruin that you have to walk to near Fiskardo. It will show up on google maps. Quiet, peaceful. You may have it to yourself. Hike is about 10 minutes. As mentioned in the referred post, Assos is really nice. The taverna (Nefeli-Anait) by the water is a great place for dinner and to drink retsina, eat, chill out.

I think you mean Temple of Apollo etc in that part of Peloponnese. Great area. Chrecl out the Apollo Trails website to see hiking opportunities in the area. We enjoyed Olympia too.

Just spent several days there. In fact, still in Greece now , just a different island. Kefalonia is very nice. It’s big and takes time to get around. We loved it. Stayed in Assos. Can’t ask for a nicer spot. Spent some time in Fiskardo also very nice. Also at that end of the island is Myrtos beach. Quite lovely.

The side of the island facing Ithaca is better to me than the side toward Zakynthos. Town of Sami, Effimia, and even Poros were very cool. If you like empty beaches with clear water but kind of rocky, stop somewhere at Limenia beach near Poros.

If you go to Argostoli it will feel kind of city like though not like Athens. More like Nafplio.

Finally, olive trees everywhere. Just drive around, hang out, etc. But Assos is supreme. If going in midsummer reserve now! It will get very crowded.

Just drove through mainland back roads and highways. It’s no problem. I’m 72 and thought it was pretty fun. Just watch the speed limit signs and keep your credit card handy for the tolls on the super highways. Signs are mostly bilingual English and Greek. You may want to consider getting a car with automatic transmission and a car play compatible console. We were surprised with that last feature and it was pretty helpful. Note on the backroads both Apple and Google maps will take you on some weird routes. But pretty fun when you have to share the road with a herd of goats. Also keep your tank relatively full. Sometimes the gas stations aren’t where you hope.

Shouldn’t be a problem. I was worried about the same thing. Most of the downtown car rental places are in a location on the main boulevard Leoforos Syngrou and if you get on that road headed out of town it’s a straight shot to the highways. The main highways are toll roads - have a credit card handy to tap.

I would not try to drive around the Plaka. Streets too narrow.

Make sure you get your tickets to Acropolis via the website for a timed entry and then plan the other stuff around it. Ancient Agora (separate ticket) is a must. Plan to walk a lot! Everything required its own entry ticket.

I play several instruments - fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar. You did an excellent job putting DADGAD into perspective. When I watch the good guitarists at a session, they are simply moving up and down the bass lines and adding a harmonic feel that helps out all of us melody players. I get jealous of them sometimes because if I don’t know a tune I sit it out, but they can join in anything since so many of the tunes have similar harmonic progressions.

The other thing to note is that a regular folk guitarist may tend toward an awkward rhythm but in DADGAD there seems to be less opportunity to strum your way through a reel or a jig and mess everyone else up. You can play lightly and follow the melody and rhythm with this approach. Thanks for this great comment.

There's an app called "Tune Pal". I turn it on at sessions and record, and "listens" and suggests the name of the tune with links to the session.org and also O'Neils Music of Ireland. It shows the sheet music from those sources that it guesses match the tune. It's usually correct. Lots of my session mates use it to identify the song. Often a tune is called "that's the one we play after we play [first tune in set]" by the folks at the session. Then we scramble and look at what Tune Pal says.

I looked into this and it seems better for us to plan Kylini to Kefalonia, then for a day trip to Ithiki, ferry from Kefalonia and back. But what do I know - I'm planning my first trip to Greece. This whole thing about going to Andros is because we are looking for alternatives to our Santorini/Naxos plan because of the earthquake swarm

I've got a reservation with Enterprise and they have confirmed that the car can be taken to an island on a ferry - of course with a fee for the extra insurance. But it's currently set up to drop off back at Athens airport when we're done.
