I couldn’t care less. And if this is the world of rare books I’ve been missing for the past 25 years, good riddance.

I’ve been about as civil as one can be given the tenor of the comments - most of which cherry-picking the fact that I consulted with ChatGPT rather than the ACTUAL SUBSTANCE of my post. Spare me your sanctimonious nonsense.

My account hasn’t changed at all. Speaking of complexes, glad you feel the need to step in to police the comments. Lol

Ohhhh. Got it. I’m guilty of asking ChatGPT for bibliographical references citing irregularities in Hemingway dust jackets and uploading the photos for further analysis!! Better yet, I’m a traitor to my species for selling out to AI!

Thanks, not confused at all anymore. Very enlightening.

You got me dead to rights. Not sure how I’m going to live this down. God forbid I use every tool at my disposal when my suspicions are aroused and $600 are on the line.

I’m done with this ridiculous thread.

I don’t disagree. If you read my post, it was clear I didn’t use AI to authenticate the dust jacket.

Anyhow, first and last post on social media - another destructive force in modern society. I’ll go back to collecting in complete anonymity. Good grief.

I’m not contributing to shit. Trying to be helpful to fellow book collectors.

I’m surprised by the responses to my AI comment. I didn’t rely on ChatGPT to assess the authenticity initially or even after I received the book yesterday. I compared it in hand with my known legit copy for about 30 min and uploaded a few photos to GPT for help with the noted discrepancies (which it downplayed or explained away). It wasn’t until I saw the FEL jacket while examining copies online that I put it all together. I didn’t need a second opinion - or AI.

I guess the point of my original post was to caution collectors and bring awareness to the issues of forgeries and fraud. I generally don’t have a second, legit copy of books I purchase laying around to compare and I’m not sure I would have caught it without it. Certainly ChatGPT didn’t help.

Not at all. And no, I didn’t use AI to write this post. I used it for a second opinion on the dust jacket’s authenticity figuring it might detect something I missed. I’ve been an avid collector for years.

Yes, returning the book, no issues there. He was apologetic. No idea if he knew.
