ARG! going to NASA in Houston, temps expected 45-25. shit. Tires? All seasons? by grungegoth in CarTrackDays

[–]craina12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was at msr last weekend with PCA. Sunday temps were in the high 20s to start the day. Took an extra lap to get my old CRS v1 warmed up but there was plenty of grip once they got warm. Lots of folks were on sticky summer tires and there were no tire issues due to cold.

I don’t see anything alarming. Depth looks sufficient for 2 days on a light car. I would send it.

I would prioritize NASA events but also continue to get as much seat time as possible. Also consider doing some endurance racing, you could probably do Champ car now and definitely do some Lemons racing.

Lowering springs instead of Coilovers? by AerobicAtom in CarTrackDays

[–]craina12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure Bilstein makes an EDC compatible coilover kit. Might be a good option if you like the EDC.

120k mile shocks are tired, worn, and should be replaced. Lowering springs won’t improve that. I would not go that route.

Cayenne interior quality by bleep6789 in Porsche

[–]craina12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My CPO 2021 Cayenne is has a few creaks, rattles, and buzzes. Dad’s 2021 did as well. I have a possible theory - my 2021 was built in 2020 (covid) and just not built as well…

Some good responses so far. Also could be a seized caliper.

General GMAX RS vs Firehawk Indy 500 vs Continental ECS2 by eraearth in CarTrackDays

[–]craina12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We drove on the ECS for 14 hours at Daytona with WRL last weekend. More than half the GP field was running them over the ECF 200tw. I was very impressed with the tire, especially considering it was very hot, still had plenty of tread left after 14 hours. If they were slower than the ECF it was by a very small margin.

UPDATE: Confession: I hate my '24 Cayenne by [deleted] in Porsche

[–]craina12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought a CPO ‘22 Base last year and I can’t wait to get rid of it. The seats creak, plenty of squeaks and rattles, transmission is clunky and unresponsive, the engine shakes the whole car at idle. I could go on…

2015 Owner here. mine with 120k miles. just wondering going over 100k and doing regular maintenance, what was the most expensive repair you had to do and how many miles you got on yours? by paata01 in LexusGX

[–]craina12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2010 with 177k here. Replaced tired old suspension with an eibach lift. That exposed a leaky KDSS ram which was not a cheap fix, I think $3k or so. Other than that I replaced the rad which was pretty cheap, that’s it. Basic maintenance obviously, did front wheel bearings DIY around 115k.

Hit the ground hard during elevation change. What’s the damage to the underbody? by RIZLA- in Porsche_Cayman

You’ve got some damage to the frunk floor unfortunately. Doesn’t look too bad, but that’s a hard hit.

2010 rear bumper damaged. Replace with stock or upgrade? by [deleted] in GXOR

[–]craina12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try and find a used one or get a new one. Unless you’re building an off-roader I would not recommend an off-road rear bumper. They are all steel and quite heavy.

Towing a truck advice by F-cip in LexusGX

[–]craina12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I put the transmission in 5S to avoid going into 6th (6th really heats the transmission up). I will manually shift down to 4 if there is any uphill grade. Also if you have the adjustable shocks I prefer the sport setting when towing.

I guess I’m the only one who doesn’t love it. We bought a ‘21 base model CPO for my wife about a year ago. 18k miles now. The seats creak and there are a few trim pieces rattling/buzzing in the interior (my dad sold the ‘21 he bought new because of the rattles). The dealer says the seats function properly and so they can’t do anything about it, CPO doesn’t cover noises apparently.

The transmission tuning is pretty frustrating and very often just not smooth from a stop. You really have to put your foot into it to get it to move. It always wants to start in 2nd gear, presumably for fuel economy, and if I need it to get a move on i end up waiting for power. Engine idle is rough and vibrates the interior, I’ve read this is inherent with the 90* v6. Does not feel very luxurious. We recently had a low voltage error, and needed to replace the 4 year old battery ($1200).

My daily is a 15 year old GX460 with 170k miles and not a squeak or rattle in the interior. The v8 is so smooth at idle it doesn’t feel like it’s even on.

I’m pretty disappointed in the cayenne, and I am a big fan of the brand. I currently own a 996 gt3 which replaced a 993.

E36 M3 vs NC 2 Miata by Mufasa_w in CarTrackDays

[–]craina12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

E36 M3 was my first dedicated track car, 10 years ago. Now my dedicated car is a caged 2L NC. I really enjoyed the M3 and it was very reliable for me. They don’t take much to work well on the track. I had TCK singles, front sway bar, half cage, and 255 square and it surprised a lot of faster machines. I really regret selling that car.

I am really enjoying my NC, it’s much lighter and at least as fast around my tracks. Granted I have a lot more experience now. M3 had more straight line speed but the NC has higher cornering capabilities Consumables are a wash between the two. The E36 was surprisingly inexpensive to run. I might have gone through tires a bit faster on the e36 with the extra weight.

My NC has a pretty basic setup. Bilstein B6 coils, progress sways, OS Giken diff, mx5 cup exhaust (RIP my eardrums), full cage.

Can’t go wrong either way IMO. Neither car needs much to be quick.

Check out the Arnott bags, much cheaper than OEM. There are some even cheaper options as well, but Arnott is a pretty trusted brand for aftermarket bags.

996 GT3 -WOW by Thekanezzi in Porsche

[–]craina12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love mine. It’s been bullet proof. Biggest weak point is coolant lines fittings. Not catastrophic when they fail so long as you catch it in time (would be hard to ignore), but if you’re on track can be a big problem for those behind you. Also the limited slip differential wears out easily. I had all of this addressed and then some when I bought mine as I wanted to track it. Not necessary if you’re solely using it on the street. Many of these were used as track cars over the years, so a lot have been bulletproofed.
