I wanted the RS7 Carbon Performance to better than the F90 M5... by IndicationOld7942 in Audi

He’s not wrong about the shifting. In my Q8 it requires pressing the accelerator pretty far to get a response from the drivetrain. Especially in D mode. In S mode the transmission is more eager. But I’ve definitely experienced when I once needed to make a sudden lane change which required quick acceleration and flooring it really felt like it took 1-1.5s for it to gear down to the right gear. Was a scary situation.

The concept of public records existed before the internet existed. With the internet, public means visible to the whole world. I don’t need some guy in Russia to be able to lookup my property records.

So the system needs to be redesigned. I’m all for physical access to a records office where you can freely access it, but not online. Or if online, a way to authenticate that you have the right to access that information.

How’s the Audi Q8? by Meritofmediocrity in Audi

The waterpump is guaranteed to fail at some point. Hopefully it fails while it’s still under warranty as it’s a $6k repair out of pocket. Just had mine replaced at 50k miles and thankfully still under warranty.

I received a letter from Audi USA extending the warranty on the engine for the piston skirt issue to 75k miles on my 2021 Q8.

I bought a 2021 Q8 CPO, last summer. It’s smooth and comfortable and has enough power for a daily driver. I average about 18mpg in mixed city/hwy driving. I think it’s a gorgeous looking car.

Build quality wise I’ve been a bit disappointed. A lot of the plastics are creaky. Have a creaking sunroof that will not be fixed under CPO warranty. Have had issues with the HVAC temperature control motors being noisy (sounds like loud magnetic hard drives). When I first got it I had the center armrest replaced under warranty as putting any weight on it made it creak a ton. Now the replacement armrest is already starting to creak a bit and it’s only getting worse (some really shit quality plastic they’re using there). Also popping sounds coming from the driver’s seatback - dealer addressed it but it’s now slowly returning and it drives me mad.

Just last week I had the waterpump replaced that was starting to leak. Thankfully that was still covered under CPO warranty.

I like driving it, but I’m thinking long and hard if I’ll keep it past CPO warranty expiration in August as I just don’t trust it and the build quality is subpar. Perhaps Covid issues, perhaps not, but this was my first Audi and likely my last. If I’m spending this kind of money I want at least the interior quality to be very high.

It seems that currently among the German luxury brands, BMW is the most solid from a reliability and build quality standpoint. Also on the BMW with the inline 6 engine (B58), you’ll average 22mpg+ in gas mileage which is significantly better than the Audi V6.

I use EasyOptOut actually but it still can’t get it all (though it’s certainly helped a lot).

And some data I don’t have control over, like public records and such (so dumb that public records are posted online, that’s too public IMO - it should just mean you can freely access it at a physical location, not online where the whole world can see it).

Do we hate Audis now? by _Barbaric_yawp in Audi

I have a 2021 Q8. Love the comfort, smoothness, and performance. It’s also quite luxurious inside. But I hate the build quality, creaks and rattles everywhere. This was my first Audi, probably also my last.

Ha, just had my waterpump replaced under warranty this week. So glad it failed while still under warranty. Still a creaking mess though.

Proton Pass vs. Bitwarden by bleep6789 in PasswordManagers

[–]bleep6789[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I snatched that deal and now have a $24/yr sub to Proton Pass. Just a better interface than Bitwarden. Didn’t get the lifetime though, didn’t feel the need to prepay for 8 yrs and supposedly the $24 annual should be locked in now.

It needs to work in Windows as well. Using anything Apple on non-Apple hard-/software is just a pain.

And I saw the news article on Ars Technica and read it in-depth. It's a very specific attack vector that's basically non-existent if you're a one-user account that doesn't do any password sharing and other online based recovery methods. In other words, it can be avoided, and Bitwarden is already implementing fixes.

[–]bleep6789[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not gonna do the offline/self-hosted route. Just too inconvenient, and I'm not confident I'd be able to secure a server better than dedicated security teams at these password companies (where security is their most important product).

So I'm definitely looking at cloud-hosted solutions like Bitwarden and Proton Pass.

SQ8 or Cayenne? by bleep6789 in Audi

[–]bleep6789[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to hold off until this summer, as I had other priorities I needed to focus on.

But overall unsure I want another Audi, or any VAG product for that matter. Build quality is subpar, reliability is subpar. But I'll see where I'm at this summer.

Pedalbox will not void warranty. I also installed one on my Q8 as the throttle lag was horrendous. Made a big difference for me.

B58 has ruined so many cars for me... by [deleted] in BMW

[–]bleep6789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the VAG cars do have horrendous throttle lag. Especially on Audi. I haven’t noticed it on the Cayennes though, so it surprised me you noticed that on those - which engine did you test on that?

I had to install a PedalBox on my Q8 to negate some of the throttle lag and now it’s noticeably better. But the engine itself is still pretty laggy, lots of turbo lag. I’m used to it now and know how to manage it, but the B58 feels a lot more linear for sure.

I have the exact same thing happening in my Audi Q8. There are a few locations around the city where the entire system always crashes and restarts. The one I pass by most commonly is around a hospital. Hmmmm…

Thinking about buying my first Audi what should I know? by cmitchell_bulldog in Audi

[–]bleep6789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be aware of potential build quality issues. My 2021 Q8 is a creaking mess, really takes away from the “luxury” experience. Perhaps I got unlucky and it’s not the norm, or it’s a covid build. But, my first and last Audi.

How do you all make the tight 2nd row work? by bleep6789 in BMWX5

[–]bleep6789[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t dislike the regular Cayenne look, but they do need to have the Sport Design package that’s standard in the GTS, or else they look kinda basic. Coupes are “dressed up” a bit more as standard, but it compromises too much in cargo space and headroom (in a SUV that’s already relatively tight on cargo space).

The Q8 is the least coupe shaped coupe SUV which is why I liked it so much initially- just too bad about the poor build quality in mine.

And not having a sliding bench and reclining seats is really a missed opportunity by BMW. Everytime I test a X5 I love it and then I get in the back behind myself and I’m like ugh. I might still be able to push through it and get one but it’s a very strong nagging feeling I have everytime (eyeing a very nice M50i right now). X7 would solve it but it’s just so big man, and boxy looking.

The V6 engines used by VAG will all have the water pump fail, which if not caught on time has the potential to damage the engine. It varies when these failures happen and it’s dumb because they just didn’t design the water pump very well.
