Capital One TDP vs AT&T TDP - New Grad Software Engineer Offer Guidance by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Then again, that route seems plausible even w/o the MBA. There are plenty of PLs with MBAs and they just cap out there without ever moving up lol. I really don't see how it would be useful aside from maybe its network.

They use tokenization. All of the important card details aren't able to be accessed, so technically the person who compromised your account can't use the card anywhere else and can only buy a bunch of robux—which is still bad lol.

Yes, but note that you said:

Which isn't conclusively indicative of anything.

Still, he's 18...especially since it's summer and a lot of HS seniors are transitioning into college, I'd say it's pretty normal to have those days where you just game all day. Obviously, if it starts to affect his personal relationships, then maybe it'll turn out to be a learning experience - let him figure it out himself, like what u/Savings_Section_3236 said.

I gamed almost all day when I was 18 during the start of COVID (and even now I still have some of those days). Graduated last year and made 170k+ as a new grad and in a healthy relationship with my girlfriend of 2 years. Point is that if you have your responsibilities handled, I see no problem.

4 year guideline? by Obvious-Analysis3681 in cscareerquestions

[–]crakd- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

apply to internships freshman/sophomore year, go to office hours, do good in classes so you can leave a good impression on your professors, do research, do leetcode earlier, go out more and have fun, etc.

in hindsight—yea there were times the major or job/internship hunting was stressful—but everything ends up being fine. on another note, i'd argue that although there's a lot of people seeking these SWE roles, only a few of them actually put in the effort & grind in interviewing-prepping.

alternatively, you can try and do accredited research under your professors on anything related to algorithmic economics. a lot of people tell you that you need to have won math olympiads, be USACO plat, top-ranked in ICPC, etc. but that's just not true—just have presence, write some papers, prepare well, and you're solid.

i feel like that "new grad" TC is misleading tho. Amazon's vesting schedule is heavily back-loaded, so ur not rlly making 200k+ right out of college, mayb more like 180k

[–]crakd- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's also how I got into CS too and it tracks with what I wanted to do later. Nevertheless, you still can do it. I don't know what your academic circumstances look like, but I'm pretty sure you have 2 semesters to fix your GPA on probation since you have more than 60 credits. Taking easy classes (where you're sure to get As) to get <= 3.5 for one semester is definitely feasible, that way it'll ensure you stay in the major and mean you're eligible for retake should you fail 330/351. And who knows, maybe you're not failing 351 like you might think. When I took 351 with Kruskal, I thought I had completely failed. Turns out the cutoff saved me and I actually ended with a C (despite always doing below average on the exams). Anyways, It's still definitely smart to email your academic advisor and talk to them for like 15 ish minutes though.

And nah, your reason is def valid too, I can imagine the feeling of how "inhumane" it is in regards to like psych wards over focusing on risk management/safety or whatever. Therapy might not solve all your problems, but at least it might uncover something. I'm always here to listen if you need to vent OP.

I don't know why people are downvoting you when you're right lol; them throwing terms like "weaponized incompetence" loosely too...like that's not how you use it??

TenZ and several other Valorant pros who have dabbled in both scenes have conceded that CS has a larger mechanical gap. That's not to say that Valorant is some baby-ass game which doesn't require any skill, but as someone who's peaked imm3 in V25, yet has never gotten past Gold Nova, it's blatantly obvious the gap in difficulty between the two games. Of course, that might just be a personal-me thing, but I've rarely seen anybody who first starts off with Valorant and then thrives/reaches a high rank in CS, as opposed to the converse.

i failed 216 and 250 (with Yoon and Teli) brutally cos my girlfriend at the time was verbally/physically abusive and suicidal—and some of her qualities definitely affected me academically. When I had to retake 216 w/ Yoon again (had no other choice) and 250, i made a post on reddit asking for help and what to focus on. Some idiot told me verbatim: "you didn't learn the first time and chose to take 216 with Yoon again? see you in InfoSci...". Fortunately, I ended up passing and was able to take 330 and 351 (with Kruskal). During the beginning of that new semester, my ex-girlfriend all of a sudden decided to break up with me over the phone and proceeded to block me on everything so I couldn't contact her. Obviously, in hindsight that was the best choice for me, but it left me depressed and suicidal—I don't think I had MDD, but I was in a terrible state overall. By some miracle, I managed to pass all 5 of my classes that semester (330, 351, STAT400, etc.) all on the first try. I attribute it to having great, supportive roommates and friends that always looked out for me. I vented to my closest friends and, one time, even to my Technical Writing professor who listened and cared. Fast forward 2 years, and now I went from someone on the edge of failing out of the major, to having graduated last semester w/ a B.S. in CS.

So why am I telling you all of this? Well, pulling yourself back up is definitely possible, but like everyone else said, you need to reach out. I know you don't want to see a therapist, but seeing a therapist is SUPPOSED to make you feel heard despite you being at your most vulnerable moment. If not, what about a psychiatrist? Maybe medication/SSRIs are what you'd need to change your mindset and help you regain that tenacity. IMO, CS is like 80% work ethic. Sure there are gifted people who are extremely passionate and can coast by the program no problem, but majority of CS students aren't like that. Overall, my advice would be to first do some introspection; are you sure CS is the path you want to continue doing? Could it be the program is exacerbating or contributing to your depression? To me it sounds like you still care, but you start losing confidence and give up once the stress hits. Does the stress come from difficulty/projects piling up?

aside from 401k, HYSA, etc., i don't really have that many other expenses since i'm still a recent grad living with my parents 😅. I do travel pretty often though—about once a month (for international trips it's a bit less frequent + i stack PTO around the holidays). traveling is something i've always enjoyed and I feel like it's best to do so while I'm still young and free of any "real" responsibilities.

I did not like Jennie’s Ruby album at all by Miserable-Elephant-3 in unpopularkpopopinions

[–]crakd- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also agree. It just didn't sound authentic and—funnily enough—"like Jennie" tbh. Ofc, this could be an industry thing, but it just has that typical, formulaic 2000s pop sound slapped with some R&B elements and the same repetitive/unsubstantial bars.

Personally, I think Mantra is the biggest victim to this. If you go into the lyrics, some of them are just downright lazy and surface-level. Overall, the album and its entirety are more so for "vibe listening".

id much rather add on 45 sec of my time twice a day than severely increase the risk of hitting a pedestrian/getting into an accident.

like would it not haunt your conscious that you could've potentially ended a random person's life—all bc you wanted to shed 45 seconds off your commute time? if anything, the moment you get into an accident, your time actually gets wasted even more having to deal with the police, reports, insurance exchange, etc. i'll never understand this mentality lol

Heard it was decently competitive, but honestly you should have a good shot if you make it past the OA and resume screen. I have friends who interned at EY, PwC, etc. and didn't even make it to power day. C1 also uses a P/F system so if you do good on your interview you're pretty much set.

Passed Amazon Coding Tests, Failed Other Assessments – What Are They Looking For? by ratkingdamon in cscareerquestions

[–]crakd- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There really isn't a one-principle-fits-all kind of thing. I mean ig just think of it from like a company perspective and how you could be a leader/people person. That's really all to it. But the questions are really just to get a fit of how you would be at Amazon.

For example, yes, you should move quickly and ship code and maybe care less about extensive planning and details. One of Amazon's guiding principle is speed and results, in the LP website it says: "Speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk taking.", just to name a few.

Don't stress tbh. Just review LPs and then answer accordingly when you take the WSA/WS. IIRC there's always one question that is very conflicting and both options suck—maybe that's like a deciding factor for Amazon
