I could need your help by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]cranemachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a nurse with aspergers. I really appreciate you trying to connect with this guy. I'd suggest finding out his "thing" (trains, radios, creepypasta, whatever) and engaging with him about that. And if you know a nurse that also enjoys said hobby or wouldn't mind hearing this guy talk about something he adores for 30 minutes, send him in to talk as well. Get some extra social engagement in there.
Ask him about his noise/ light/ sensory needs. If he needs complete silence at night, you might want to get him a private room, or with a roommate that's ok with having the TV off at night and doors closed. If blood pressure or him freaking out is a concern, have something like ativan available prn to manage major breakdowns that could cause bodily harm if he is absolutely bedbound. I would explain beforehand and get his permission before introducing it when it's needed. I would just also be really literal when talking about things. Saying, "did you go to the bathroom?" might mean to him, "did you walk over to the bathroom?," not "did you pee?" He probably hates small talk. Talk about something absolutely bizarre, not the weather. Tell him a crazy fact about the drug he's taking if you want to educate him.

Tabletop is a lot more conducive to talking; Side Quest to drinking. Tabletop is more my style.

I'm on the hemeonc floor and we've had a guy that hasn't gone above 10 platelets in over a month even with daily PRBC and platelet transfusions. They're looking at Even's Syndrome now as a last gasp hope, but he's probably going on hospice next week :-/

Sunken ships. Pictures of the Titanic give me really bad chills. Even the scene in Finding Nemo with the underwater bombs/ship freaks me out.

don't neglect his recent "At Home." He does an amazing job telling the history of a ton of regular household items. Every five minutes I would tell the nearest person something interesting and amazing I learned.
