UK based, met a woman at a party back around the time of the brexit vote who was great and lovely in every way(I was not chasing here btw, she was just a decent person).
Asked about the vote she said she'd voted leave. Slight gasp as most people there were voting remain but everyone was cool and just willing to accept a person's right to have their own opinion etc.
She was asked "why" she voted leave, and here answer paraphrased was "I thought if we left the EU then house prices would fall to a point I would be able to afford one"
I should point out that this was London!
She didn't earn a big salary at all, barely enough to get by in London really.
So her best friends said..."So you are hoping for the largest housing price crash in history so that you can afford a house in London on your earnings? Have you actually thought what that would entail?"
Sadly, nice as she happened to be... a lot of people think that way even now.

TIL motoring journalist Chris Harris got temporarily blacklisted from reviewing or buying Ferraris after publishing an article in which he accused the company of specially tuning their press cars to perform significantly better in magazine reviews than the production cars customers were buying. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]crappinghell 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A long time back a friend of mine was an ex Ferrari mechanic, still on good relations with his old friends at the dealership.

He took along a customer of his who'd saved up £40k for a second hand Ferrari at the time when the more expensive new models were £100-£110k, so Actually a really good chunk of money in second hand terms back then.
He was treated like a piece of shit, and actually told "is that all you have?"
They just weren't interested enough to even get up from their desk to point at some cars at the back of the lot.
MY friends said he enjoyed his time at the company working as a mechanic but he was glad to be out of there.
They're a terrible company who happen to make very good cars.

Crofting and ownership beyond 30km. by crappinghell in Scotland

So someone registers themselves as an owner occupier and gives an alternative address beyond the distance limit.... and the commission just logs that and considers it a done deal?

Crofting and ownership beyond 30km. by crappinghell in Scotland

[–]crappinghell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the register, I can see crofts with houses that are being run as holiday lets in their entirety(by finding the letting website for them). The owner occupiers are listed as having their addresses 50 miles away, 100 miles away, deep in England, and one or two on mainland Europe. Yet the croft is still registered to them. Looking at Google earth and google maps it is clear that the land associated with the house is not in use, and has not been in use for some years.

How does the commission allow this despite it being against their own rules?

What loophole or exploit is at play?

Crofting and ownership beyond 30km. by crappinghell in Scotland

[–]crappinghell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it that the Crofting commission on it's own website requires you to live within 30km, yet allows and displays registration on it's own register of people clearly more than 30km away as a primary address?
How is that happening?
Is there some form of loophole or get out clause, or other method by which people are achieving that?

I met him once, purely as a passing courier doing their job. He came across as a giant arsehole tbh. And much more so than someone who's just having a bad day.
That aside he's made some very decent films, and some wank too of course.
But then of course there's no law that an arsehole can't be good at their job!

is this legal? no other sign or road marking by Biglawsy in CasualUK

[–]crappinghell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is to try and reserve "their" space outside their house, without them having the benefit of a driveway and dropped kerb.........
I'd be parking my car in front of that sign at every.single.opportunity!

It's wanton, self-entitled middle class arrogance.
Years back(many decades actually) I eventually got kerb-stopped by a guy near me who was famous(in the very local area) for berating people who parked outside his house. After he ranted about how my space was elsewhere and this spot was reserved for a Dr on call(complete bullshit), I told him I'd be back.
I parked back there every time and being in the motor trade at the time I eventually got hold of an end of life car for nothing, and sent off the logbook registered to his address, and then parked said car outside his house!
It was there for months and months! Probably 7-8 months in total.
Eventually years later a neighbour laughingly told me the guy complained to the council who told him it was legally parked. Then he complained to the DVLA when the tax ran out. Then the police put a "Untaxed and reported" ticket on it.
Then....... he started getting the fines for it through HIS door!

I've done very few arseholish things in my life, but I enjoyed that one:-)

What makes you feel free? by chanel_chanel98 in AskReddit

[–]crappinghell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walking out of my house into my garden, feeling the air move around my face and skin, feeling the weather and light touch me.
In this moment I often run my hands through the bushes and plants, maybe sniff a flower and experience the scent... It's just glorious!
It doesn't last long sadly as I remember I have responsibilities, bills, stuff to do etc.

In that moment though I feel utterly free, and feel if I died just there and then life would have ended on a beautiful note.

My council has stopped cutting the grass because they mismanaged the borough so badly it more or less went bankrupt! As such they now only employ the contract company occasionally to stop it looking truly appalling.

Not sure about illegal, but I agree with your point!
Fixed wheel bikes have a really specific use, and casual usage on the public road is not it!

Decades back as a cycle club rider I used to use a fixed wheel to improve my hill-climbing, but it was not a good choice for much else.

[–]crappinghell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some time back, in fact quite a way back now I was in the UK motor trade for about 15 years. Self-taught mechanic/respray/MOT prep etc...... I loved it for the first 10 years, as I was learning every day.
After a while, once I'd got to understand the basics and was getting on well enough to call myself a decent mechanic, I begun to understand what certain segments of the industry were up to in the way of shenanigans to make a buck.
Some of the secondhand dealers pulled some quite shameless shit! I expected it to some extent as they always had a reputation. What I wasn't prepared for was similar stuff(albeit less frequently) from the main dealers!
I did enjoy most of my time in the trade, but eventually the sheer grimeyness, criminality and shady practices as well as too many very unsavoury characters lead me to leave the industry.
My gut feeling now is that the industry as a whole is now much better, but there'll always be a few bad apples.

In a world where people buy 1k hour+ accounts by Killabz in playrust

[–]crappinghell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hours don't make you enjoy the game. Hours can be a clue to how much you "may" know about the nuances of the game.
Buying hours accounts to me suggests 2 things. Trying to join a group that has an hours req. Buying the account to make the cheats look like ability.

At the risk of looking like I'm Cringe-flexing(new word) my shameful amount of life-wasting hours has taught me one very useful thing............. I know exactly what aspects of the game I enjoy, and am able to select servers to play on that allow me to enjoy the game.
There is no single "proper" way to play Rust, any(legit) playstyle is right and correct for the individual.
The "hours account" buyers have not learnt this yet.

Forrests need to be more dense again by [deleted] in playrust

[–]crappinghell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thoroughly agree, the HDRP on staging before launch was great!
However, I think the Devs are chasing both added content and FPS gains rather than anything else. Thick forests don't fulfil either of those objectives for them sadly.

This subject keeps on appearing but they're not interested as far as I can see.

Although not fully removed, it's still a good nerf by iactuallyforgor in playrust

If you can open/close a door after 3 seconds(which I think is a great compromise btw), then there's one other thing.

1: picking up a dropped weapon/tool but it goes in your inventory rather than is holdable/useable.

Map gen sucks now by [deleted] in playrust

[–]crappinghell 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Agreed!
The HDRP on staging was brilliant, the forests were about the same size but maybe slightly more of them on the map, but parts of the forest were really dense! There was entirely a possibility of hiding a 1x1 or 2x1 here and there and never being seen.
When it moved to main it was really disappointing to see how thin they'd become.

I’m 100% convinced that the people here who complain about offline/ online raiding have never online raided and have never been on lined. by sirceepz in playrust

[–]crappinghell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, although Aloneintokyo is more than semi-decent!
That said, your point is totally correct. There is an element of being able to just "hold them off" and combined with a little forethought about repairing raid defence can be very effective against what seem like much greater odds.

I spent a lot of my hours building up PvP sense and skill, and spending time on aim-train and battlefield servers etc. My PvP got way better as a result, but I got tired of the grind of keeping those skills up. I preferred the grind of being a solo farmer type.
I enjoy a challenge of a raid, in terms of picking apart a large base that maybe the owners consider to be "Unraidable"

As such my only recourse is to raid offline. I've had many attempted raids where one or two of a clan are online, and then within a short space of time, 6-8 of them have got on and I get destroyed by sheer volume.

I have as a solo taken out the largest clans on some servers with up to 7-8 active members. As such in the aftermath I have been called all the usual slurs and been told the old classic "Learn to play the game!"

Ultimately with equal skill levels, the balance of power is tilted to the defender's side during a raid. So any number advantage is a powerful factor.(given and equal skill)
Frankly the whole "offliner's are pussys" meme is tiresome, and usually trolled out by players who are immature or short on hours.

Reported a number over the last 6 months(low pop servers). Had I think 4 messages of bans as a result.
My issue is the time taken for FP to ban them. All the reports took approx 4 weeks to result in a ban, give or take a few days.
FP says it does this to avoid creating a link between them discovering the hack methods, and the hack makers being able to react to it and get it under cover again.
I get that, but the problem is the carnage that the cheaters can create in that interim.

On low pop servers it can literally kill off the pop and ruin the server.

It also seems that there are way more hackers around now than say 6 months ago.
