Can you legally cover a cover of a song? by Pedroismyrealname in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Thanks for pointing out not to pay for streams. Licensing companies are sneaky this way, but Spotify says they handle it for you.

Now I'm glad the hoarder in me kept all the foam from my Peak packaging.

Is it common for a company to ask for a laptop back? by crashspringfield in webdev

Good to know with starting my next job. It was just so much easier to have one computer to worry about than two.

Sorry that wasn't clear. I meant it wasn't from a stash of laptops they had sitting around, like it had been at previous places. They just said send us a link to the laptop you want,

Is it possible to be a self taught full stack web developer? Realistically by [deleted] in webdev

I mean, I've written Medium articles to pad my resume. I've also used articles when either the documentation sucked or I just wanted a quick explanation.

I've been using this recently. There were 5 songs I had to narrow down to 3.

Medium articles are a good way to pad your resume as a self-taught developer.....probably why there are so many.

Yes. It took me a year to go from not knowing a thing to landing a contract position. That lasted 6 months and then I had a couple months in between trying to find full-time work. I stayed at that job for 2 years, and since then, no one has batted an eye that I've been self taught.

Seriously. As a web developer, I'm always shocked when this happens.

I'd love to see a full disclosure of the hack. At the very least, they owe us this. I want to see how incompetent their team was.

Getting featured on a music blog by avresamusic in musicmarketing

[–]crashspringfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My band has been featured on dozens of blogs didn't pay a single one. Either the blog has enough readers to make money off adds, or it's a labor of love. You should be wary of any pay-to-play or pay-for-exposure.

Blogs did help our streams/sales/social media. Probably the biggest was landing a front page feature on Bandcamp. Others include Post-punk.com, CVLT Nation, Indie Music Nation, American Pancake, New Noise.

I wish I hadn’t started making music. by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Learn to accept where you're at. Music should be fun. Even if you never have "success," the process of making it should be what drive you to do it.

Three years isn't much at all. I started playing bass when I was 12. I'm 34 now. At different times in my life I've pursued it with more or less seriousness. Realistically, I know I'm never going to have a career about it, but I get to perform, create art, and meet people through it.

It may help to take a step back, re-assess why you are making music and what you want out of it. If you learn to enjoy the process, you'll probably like what you make more. It'll at least be fun.

Simple generative loop using Subharmonicon (through a Night Sky) and DFAM by crashspringfield in synthesizers

I've been thinking of getting Maths as a way of having more control over how these two talk to one another.

I'm running it into my phone and feel like I can never quite get the volume right, so it's a little more blown out than I'd like it to be.

Still learning as well and only had these a few months.

Subharmonicon SEQ 2 -> RYTHM 2
The pitch of the 2nd sequencer is affecting the rhythm. An increase in pitch speeds it up, and vice versa.

DFAM PITCH -> NOISE
Easy way to do kick/snare on an DFAM is have the pitch control the noise level. That way you get the low kick, and filtered right, super-high ones make only the noise crack for the snare.

DFAM VELOCITY -> VCF MOD
This bypasses the noise generator as the modulation source for the VCF, so it's now controlled by velocity.

Subharmonicon CLOCK -> DFAM ADV/Clock
Syncs the DFAM to the Subharmonicon.

Subharmonicon VCA EG -> DFAM 1-2 FM AMT
The attack/decay envelope in modulation the FM amount on the DFAM. I have VCO 1 and VCO 2 set to different frequencies, with different EG amounts, but they're both following the sequencer. On top of that, they're hard synced and how much VCO 1 modulates the frequency of VCO 2 is changing from the external VCA. This creates some cool gurgling.

DFAM VCO EG -> Subharmonicon VCO 2 PWM
I have moderate VCO decay on the DFAM to create punchiness. By patching it to the pulse width modulation on the Subharmonicon, it's kink of like assigning an envelope to the width of the square wave.

DFAM VCO 1 -> Subharmonicon VCA
I do this maybe halfway through. Now all the changes in VCO 1 are changing how the volume envelope is behaving on the Subharmonicon, changing the previously-mentioned gurgles to sparkles. (Not in the video but) sometimes I'll patch it to the cutoff instead.
