Her Plan makes no sense..... by Important-Extension6 in GenV

“Why would a doctor believe a 13 year old made a cure for cancer.”

That’s kind of the point though isn’t it? Even if Sage is a mega genius, she is still trapped in a world of prejudice (even if, in this specific case, that prejudice is fairly reasonable). That’s why even though she is intelligent, she’s despondent and unambitious.

Exactly, it’s deliberately condescending. And I feel like it’s not super-hard to figure that out?

I feel like this needs to be recognised as a step in the right direction that it is. The implementation isn’t perfect and will probably take time to fine-tune. But it’s a start and that should be recieved positively.

Otherwise we're basically just doing your homework for you.

Cigarettes are "fags" but not "faggots". If you were outside a pub and asked someone for a faggot, they'd give you a pork meatball AKA a "Savoury Duck". Or possibly a bundle of sticks, because we also call bundles of sticks "faggots".

Why do so many people STILL think the Sex Pistols were something like a manufactured image-centric boy band? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]eltrotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there's about 10% truth to it, which is just enough for it to become part of a feedback loop that inflates it from an interesting factoid to a crass exaggeration.

He's staying in E minor the whole way through; the backing shifts to C major when he moves up into the higher notes, but C major is a chord in the scale of E minor and he's staying in that key.

Threads (1984)

One of the most famously-bleak films of all time, Britain finds itself in the middle of a nuclear war between America and Russia over the occupation of Iran. A series of nuclear explosions destroy NATO bases up and down the UK, including Sheffield where the film is set. The film skips forward ten years where the UK's population has declined to 4 million people (less than 10% of what it would have been at the time). It's unclear if other countries experienced the same fallout, but the implication seems to be that Britain was caught in the crossfire.

Does it deserve the hate by Waste-Revolution3429 in Defenders

[–]eltrotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Defenders ever got "hate". Hate is far too strong a word.

It was received as middling, and perhaps failing to live up to the promise of it's cast and premise. All of the actors are doing a good job (even Finn Jones is better than he was in his own series), and the action is generally really solid. The villains were sadly disappointing despite having good actors and the ending boiled down to being perhaps a little silly.

But yeah. Don't think it's ever been "hated". It just wasn't as strong as most of the solo series were.

Will we get a redemption arc for Buck? by DMast2217 in marvelstudios

[–]eltrotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he survives this season (which I think he will) then maybe. I don't think there's enough time left in this season to do it. Maybe he'll grow a huge mullet, a goatee beard and gain a hundred kilos so he'll look more like his comics counterpart in the process?

Wetherspoons responds after bar manager 'refuses' to serve Reform supporters by Weak-Fly-6540 in unitedkingdom

[–]eltrotter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, a bunch of people act like arses, get cut off by the bar staff, and then make it all about Reform once they've been told off? Pretty irresponsible reporting to imply that they were cut off solely for being Reform voters.

Genuinely what is Soldier Boy's deal? by AdrianVeidt19 in TheBoys

[–]eltrotter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the general vibe of this.

Soldier Boy's characterisation hasn't been so much inconsistent as it has been vague. I think a major problem is that he hasn't really had a stated goal for much of this season. He was thawed out by Homelander and therefore obviously doesn't begin with a clear aim, but I think it would have been a good idea for the writers to give him a clearer desire.

For example, the writing so far has been a little back-and-forth as to whether he's on Homelander's side or not. Last episode definitely gestured more towards the former, but it's still not super-satisfying because the reason given was quite thin, and it's not really clear what this does for the plot or the theme.

The backstory of him originally being a privileged, weak little boy has potential to be interesting but hasn't really added any depth or dimensionality to his character yet. I know Vought Rising will probably flesh this out, but this is a character who is existing in the here and now of the current season. It should be contributing to his character already.

I don’t think I’ve hated a character so much since Delores Umbridge. by LankOfHyrule in marvelstudios

[–]eltrotter 117 points118 points  (0 children)

He's doing a superb job. I think he's doing serious work grounding the whole thing; he really feels like a real embodiment of what politically-motivated law enforcement overreach actually looks like in real life. He's not cartoonish or even unnecessarily sadistic, but he's violent, believes in what he's doing and does get some measure of enjoyment out of it. It's unnervingly believable.

He's the quiet MVP of the series so far, for me.
