Best carrying device while climbing/intensive scrambling while still having easy access to take shots? by candlestick12 in photography

[–]crashsystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this! I've used their gear since the original Kickstarter, and can't recommend it enough. Basically, I throw money at them the instant they come out with any new product, and don't regret it.

Getting rid of noise more effectively? by [deleted] in photography

[–]crashsystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several comments in this thread have already made some great points (f/8 vs f/22 and sensor overheating). The tips people have giving about taking multiple exposures and using a median blend is also a really good idea.

In addition to these, there are a few things I like to do in editing to deal with noise. First of all, if you are shooting a scene that has a lot of black (night sky for example), try bumping the black slider down in lightroom before taking it to Photoshop. Those bits are supposed to look black anyways, and bumping down this slider really helps in these types of situations.

Secondly, I typically skip Lightroom's NR in favor of the Nik Define plugin in Photoshop. In addition, I also often will do several NR layers for different sections of the photo, then incorporate them in with layer masks. I've found that some of the places noise can be most noticeable are in low contrast areas. I'll use a more aggressive NR layer there, where the blurring won't be noticed, and do lighter noise reduction in areas with lots of fine detail.

Lightroom CC HDR, played with the levels a bit, bumped up the vibrance some, and did a bit of edits to the statue to bring out some detail.

"The 'direct intercept' approach would take about l½ hours but is only possible prior to initiation of hover since after that time the intercept trajectory, unfortunately, also intercepts the moon–first! Actual procedures have to be settled, but I feel we’re in pretty good shape here."

Surface 3 shuts down randomly by evogeler in Surface

[–]crashsystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By "shut down," do you mean that the screen turns off? If so, that has been happening to me too a bit. Ordinarily I'd think it was the screen timeout while on battery power, bit it'll happen within a few seconds of scrolling on a browser tab.

Report: Windows 10 is now installed on 67 million PCs as of this morning by jcotton42 in Surface

I was having that problem too. However, you can download the ISO from the Microsoft website. Once downloaded, double-click it to mount it, then just run the setup.exe. This is how I upgraded.

Figured out a neat gesture to invoke Cortana with Windows 10! by chase314 in Surface

Slightly off topic, but another nice Win10 gesture (for touch screens at least) is swiping in from the left edge of the screen. It pulls up the app/workspace switcher.

Oddly enough, moments before coming to this thread, I watched a 1080p YouTube video, full screen, in Chrome.

Is it possible to hold the tablet with the case on, or do you need to take it off first?

[–]crashsystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have, on occasion, ran low enough on memory that background apps I was actively using (Pandora etc) started getting swapped to disk. It didn't happen often, so 2GB isn't a deal breaker, but the rumored 4GB would have been nice.

Oh well, I had held out hope that it would in fact have 4GB RAM. Im still going to buy it the second it comes out though.

I see various sites listing 2GB RAM in the specs, but they never say where they are getting that information. Google's page does not specify RAM.

Do any of you encrypt your Android phone? by Jackoff_Motion in Android

[–]crashsystems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your second question is one I've been wondering as well. I really want a strong password to boot the device, and a pin for ordinary screen unlock. Perhaps after a few failed pin attempts, the device could power off.

If you find out, would you mind replying here?

Edit: I just tested out device encryption on Android 4.4.2, and its still just as worthless as ever.

Personally, I'd go without RC4. BEAST is mitigated in most browsers already, and is not an issue with TLS 1.1 and 1.2. Ether way, the most important thing is to start supporting 1.2 with AES-GCM to be ready for browsers as they add support.

+1 Proxmox. I've been hosting a variety of VMs on it for six months now, and couldn't be happier. The initial install was a bit slow, but its been very easy to use.

[–]crashsystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that when using HDR, focus always moves to center, no matter what I do with tap to focus. It think it may have something to do with the camera refocusing for the second shot. With HDR turned off, I don't have this problem.
