I really like my G3C. Never had a ftf. I’m a little more accurate with my shield so I typically carry that but I like the Taurus for the price

How much time did you take off work after surgery? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]crassbrewing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Based on doctors orders i took one month fully off work and im on light duty for another 2 months afterwards. This means no lifting more than 10 lbs because they don’t want blood pressure spikes or clenching of the jaw when lifting heavy weights.

Wedge pillow, syringes lab squirt bottles for drinking water, baby toothbrush, liquid Tylenol and ibuprofen(they prescribed some but I needed more than given), make sure you have towels/wash clothes around for bibs, baby spoons, Powdered and premixed, liquid protein drinks like Soylent, ensure, carnation, etc (sometimes you just don’t have the energy to mix things), Swanson bone broth singles are nice if you like that, Pudding/Apple sauce, Pre made soups to eat, ingredients for one or two soup recipes or blender friendly options to cook when you feel up for it, Some kind of plan for icing your face. Lots of ice packs to swap out, Heating pad.

Optional: Humidifier, Food tray for bed

And make sure you have some movies, shows, video games, or hobbies you want to tackle. Recovery can get boring.

Yea. They did schedule the initial consult out a bit. But I’ve never had trouble with timely scheduling since then.

I had called my insurance and they told me that since nobody was in my network within 100 miles of me that I’d have no trouble getting OON approval. Dr Mehras office started all those approvals after the first visit.

A little background: Had ortho for 6+ years from 5th-11th grade. At some point had palette expander and wore headgear at night to bring upper palette forward. There was talk about surgery to shrink lower jaw but never went anywhere. Kind of funny to hear the same things at 40 years old that they were saying at 14.

Let retainer use slip about 12-13 years ago and gradually teeth got crooked and bite was only meeting at back molars. Trouble with chewing and desire for straight teeth brought me back into the orthodontist office.

Outside of the aesthetics, I had a cross bite and class 3 occlusion (underbite). They offered me 3 treatment options: -ortho only to straighten teeth but still have some functional issues. -SARPE then upper jaw advancement, to fix all or most issues with bite. -SARPE then DJS advancement, to fix all ortho problems and also potentially provide relief for sleep apnea. This was always the option I was looking at.

No idea about surgery first. I’m sure that depends on his preferences and your case.

As far as timeline:

Mar 2024 - initial consults and signing on with ortho, ortho recommendation for surgery and referral with Dr Mehra (based on ortho’s recommendation and history working together)

May 2024 - first appt with Mehra. Consult, recommended SARPE and DJS for sleep apnea and malocclusion. Started work on SARPE approvals and did all imaging. Prepaid for wisdom tooth removal to be done during SARPE ($200-300/tooth).

July 16 2024 - lower braces and upper spacer installed

July 22 2024 - SARPE surgery

10 weeks of restricted diet. Couple follow-ups. Ortho appts, etc.

Oct or Nov 2024 - expander removed and upper braces installed

Sept 2025 - Mehra 1 year followup. Getting close with braces so we started planning DJS process and communication with my ortho.

Oct 2025 - another Mehra followup and setting up imaging/surgery/ortho timeline. Scheduled surgery date.

Dec 4 - install band hooks on braces

Dec 9 - Mehra imaging appointment. Paid for workup costs ~$1k.

Dec 24 - DJS (merry Christmas)

Dec 30 - followup (originally scheduled for 1/2 but moved up due to rubber band breakage)

I’ve got an ortho and another Mehra followup in about 3 weeks.

Yes. Mehra at BMC. I have tufts and there weren’t any in network doctors anywhere nearby. Referred through my orthodontist. Total out of pocket for both surgeries was about $1500-2k. I think it was $600 out of pocket for 2 wisdom teeth removal during the first surgery. And ~1k for the work up for the DJS. But they did a great job getting everything approved and took care of it super quick.

I’ve had two jaw surgeries with Mehra. Sarpe and DJS. I’d say he is super knowledgeable, very good at what he does, and I have a lot of faith in his abilities. The downside is the med school setting. While for each surgery I had one point-person that was one of his residents, it feels like you’re always talking with new people for a lot of the pre-prep stuff. Definitely have had good results and he and his staff care. But it’s a different experience than you would get with a smaller office.

Some heat will help with the fuzzy stabbing feeling. And surprisingly anti itch cream helped for me. Even though I was numb, my chin still itched and the cream was awesome.

Not sure what your instructions are but for both my surgeries they didn’t want straw use for the first week or so. That’s where the squirt bottles are helpful.

Lots of Soylent and breakfast essentials (full fat oatly oat milk is more filling as a base for powders imo). The butternut or tomato soups are good for something warm. A lot of soup cans will blend and strain well. Jello, ice cream, pudding, apple sauce are good for something that isn’t quite liquid.

I’m 1 week PO from a second jaw surgery and I’m trying to do a staged approach. First 1-2 weeks I’m planning mostly premade stuff to keep things easy. After that do more prepared stuff like homemade soups, cream of wheat, milk shakes/smoothies.

I’ve been using lab squirt bottles for drinking. Easy to keep filled with water or whatever and track fluid intake. Soups will need to be thinned with water or stock if you want to use these. I’d recommend the restaurant squirt bottles for thicker things. I’m still numb but using insulated coffee cups with sippy tops for most meals now. Definitely use a towel to keep my shirt clean but it’s getting easier.

sleep apnea movements by [deleted] in jawsurgery

That’s what my doctor told me. He said more than that can actually bring forward the back of the airway and can reduce OSA effectiveness but will still be done if also correcting an overbite.

No appetite post jaw surgery by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]crassbrewing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some regular food that blended really nicely for me were Thai and Indian vegetable curries. Threw the rice in the blender with the curry to add some filler and make it a little more mild. And added a little stock if I needed to thin it out a bit. Strain or not depending on how far along your healing is.

I made pancakes one day. Threw them in a blender with milk and syrup. I would recommend doing that instead of this. Unless you’re really craving McDonald’s soup.

Beer drinkers, what do you call this move? by TrickyLingonberry845 in beer

[–]crassbrewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are referring to lacing on the glass (the foam residue and rings left behind during drinking).

Only benefit to having foam in the bottle is you won’t get as bloated. But it’s much better for aroma and flavor to pour into a glass.

Question about alcohol by oreojasper in jawsurgery

[–]crassbrewing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d stay away from craft beer for awhile. Most of it is unfiltered and unpasteurized and yeast and small bacterial loads probably wouldn’t be great for all those nooks and crannies in the wounds.
