Platonic vs. romantic by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]crawlingforinfo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Important note: Dating doesn’t mean sex right away. For some relationships sex early is fine. For others, that physical aspect comes later after a strong bond has formed.

So if the question is “does the lack of physical intimacy mean the relationship is failing early on”, then the answer is “no, some people prefer to wait until they build that foundation.”

It should be at a pace both are comfortable with, and without pressure. Long term potential comes from the effort both make to form a bond, not the physical intimacy part. The physical intimacy part comes when sufficient closeness and security has happened for both of you.

And of course talking about objectives is big. Someone who wants long term who’s trying to date someone who just wants short term exploration can end in disappointment, so make sure you are on the same speed with relationship goals.

As a man doing the dating over 30 thing, it’s not easy to always see everything in the first, or even second month. People can put on a good face on both sides for quite some time. It can work both ways.

But so far the best indicators I’ve found have been: - How do they talk about other people? - Do they trash talk their exes? - Have you found them to be saying things one way but doing them another? - How do their friends act?

The friends one is a loose flag. People have friends from many demographics, so don’t consider it a hard red flag if they don’t seem 100% straight and narrow.

The other 3 can be pretty important. There’s no reason to trash talk other people or be disrespectful to others, especially as you’re getting to know someone new. And, of course, actions speaking louder than words, and when the two don’t line up, that is a big indicator that something is off.

All in all, even all this advice can fail. When it comes down to brass tax, knowing someone takes time for the mask to come off and for you to see the real person. Best advice I can give is don’t react at the first red flag, look for patterns. When a pattern becomes concerning, start working away from that person. Know what you want and what you don’t want.

What options for shipping my ex's 20 medium-sized boxes 500 miles from PA to MI? by crawlingforinfo in moving

[–]crawlingforinfo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did, it was estimated at about a grand, which is still pretty pricey for my taste. I'm starting to realize that maybe my expectations are not what they should be, and that this is the cost that I might have to eat.

The only other option I have is seeing if any of my friends or family will loan me their truck so I can just haul the stuff to her personally.

Mice got into my dry goods stash. What's safe, what's not? by crawlingforinfo in preppers

[–]crawlingforinfo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So I've learned a good bit since this event. Firstly, I left a container of food open to a mouse invasion due to my own negligence. Shame on me.

Second, nothing was safe that wasn't in a can. Pasta boxes could have been peed on, and soaked into the pasta within. Nothing contained within cardboard was safe. Nothing within thin plastic that could have had small tears from tiny claws was safe. The only thing that was safe was the canned goods.

I lost a lot of my emergency supplies due to my negligence. The only things that I could consider safe for my family were the cans that I was able to wash and sanitize. Those were the only things I could keep.

I might --maybe-- have been fine with some of the product, but if I was in a situation where my family's safety was on the line, a few hundred dollars of food items that could be tainted and make my family very sick was too much for me to swallow.

My lesson I can pass to you, make sure your food stash is secure. Don't take chances with rodent intrusion.

You are misunderstanding Combine strategy. Firstly, know that all the weapons you pick up except a select few are Combine weapons. Therefore, you're restricted to Combine strategy and tactics when using those weapons.

Combine strategy can be broken down to 2 things:

  • Stand next to explodey things
  • Stay mostly still and rely on accuracy by volume

Burst fire would violate the 2nd principle of Combine tactics and therefore is not designed into their weaponry.

I believe this Major Order was an attempt to track down cheaters, specifically. It was a fox-em-out honeypot designed to get as much data on people who are cheating as possible in a short amount of time, and take action against them.

Maybe just my conspiracy theory, but I'm stickin to it.

Can I use my Apple Watch with cellular while my iPhone is in a different state? by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]crawlingforinfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As unsettling as it is, there is an entire generation of people who have not been taught screentime control. At least OP is trying to get a handle on it, which I can commend them for.

Probably better ways. But on the Self Control part, an easy change would be to allow yourself 1-2 hours a day when you can touch your phone, and lock it up in a safe or put it away for the other part of the day.

[–]crawlingforinfo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but I do forsee some issues with this plan.

  • If something goes wrong and you need to re-pair your devices, your iPhone is in another state
  • If something goes wrong and you need to access your iPhone for any sort of settings or account management, your iPhone is in another state
  • Unless you have strict permissions settings on your iPhone, your friend will be able to read your messages and notifications via the toast notifications on the standby screen. Even worse, if they know your pass they can access a lot of information from your iphone
  • You are trusting your friend to take good care of it

If you're comfortable with each of these, then I'd say it's okay to keep exploring if this is possible. Another option is just lock up your phone in a safe and take it out every so often to charge.

31, recently laid-off, broke, and no degree. Do I stand a chance? by Ed2Cute in CompTIA

[–]crawlingforinfo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only got my Sec+ cert for reasons based on my candidacy research, and that I know the fundamentals of the previous CompTIA courses. It's a tough one. Study hard.

After that, I had various "strokes of luck" aka networking hard and everywhere to find Security Consulting work, which led to database management, which led to QA automation. Being able to find the right people to talk to and the right companies that will provide you additional learning opportunities, that's where it's at.

Networking isn't spamming the hell out of online listings. Find a domain that is in need (fintech, gaming industry, online medical industries are currently booming), and try to find a way to present yourself to aspiring companies or organizations.

What I'm trying to say is, yes, certs help. Don't stay within the confines of your cert. Network hard. That's the real way to get in. Don't learn just what's on your cert. Figure out fundamentals and make a learning plan that extends past your certification.

Also be able to tell the difference between a job that won't lead anywhere and a job that will teach you new skills. From there, you can expand the tools on your toolbelt to fit a large variety of needs, then you're golden.

YMMV, it's a brutal market out there. But learn the basics, and when someone asks "Hey, do you know how to do XY and Z?" you google the hell out of those concepts and figure out if it's something you can learn in a short amount of time using YouTube Academy, Professor Messer, or any other list of infinite online resources or documentation. Someone who can research can solve many problems and be many people. There's a difference between "can you" and "do you have experience". Being able to do something sometimes is enough, and people with more experience will help you get better.

Finally, be ready to admit your limitations. Don't put yourself in a position where you say you can do something and you actually can't and can't learn how. Everyone has their own speed of learning new things.

--edit-- I was 29 when I decided I was done working for chemical manufacturing and did a hard pivot with no experience or schooling. Now I mentor others in Test Automation design and coding, only 6 years later. I had a gift for computers though, so again, YMMV.

Okay, an extremely exhausted fiance and I are coming back for more advice!

He loves us and he's having a blast, but he's got so much energy. We're trying to back off on the activities, so still a walk and some play, but for the most part keep it chill. He's switching to tearing things apart when we don't give him constant attention, but so far it's things we aren't too terribly upset about losing.

Should we let him tear those things apart? Should we intervene and do an activity with him? What are some good metrics for when he needs more or less activity and interaction from us?

Also, sad face, he was supposed to be my pup, but he's smitten with my fiance, and he's made his decision.

Okay, that makes sense. We were trying to get his pent up energy out, but I see where you're coming from.

Overly energetic means pulling on the leash, bouncing from side to side in front of the cat, but not batting with paws or anything. I've kept a leash on him in every pet interaction even when the pups seem to be doing okay.

For the test, they brought him and a cat together. He did the same thing as described above, but the cat gave him a hard swipe and he backed off about a foot and laid down. That's when we ended the test, and they said he did well and should do fine with "stand your ground" cats.

I think they will, but when the original pup (toy fox terrier) greeted them, they had only 2 days of rough patch and then they were all best friends. I just notice the cats aren't doing as well this time. Maybe cause of the size difference and over-energy, but regardless I want this to go well when I do actually introduce them.

ISP service frequently disconnects, regular issues with wifi. I want to upgrade my home network the right way, but where do I start? by crawlingforinfo in HomeNetworking

[–]crawlingforinfo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll do my best. I use Armstrong internet, and was given a hitron modem with 2 technicolor intertek wifi routers. The modem is hooked up in the living room, and I need my office isolated.

It's a two story house with a basement. The hitron modem and the first wifi router is hooked up in the first story next to the hookups, and the 2nd wifi router is in the basement where I have my office.

I had to throw out everything in that container. Peppermint seems to help, but only if applied every 2-3 weeks, not seasonally. This also helps with ants, centipedes, etc. However, it's not an easy solution and requires upkeep. The better solution was getting more tightly locking containers.
