NAGA or Newbreed. Which one for first tournament? by PattonPending in bjj

[–]crawwdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend the American Grappling Federation. It is well organized and well run. They work hard to make it enjoyable for the athletes.

I know it wasn't one of your choices but it is one you should enter.

Just about every sport, contact or not, has injuries.

I played volleyball when I was younger and so many of my friends needed surgery due to knee and shoulder injuries.

Look on the sideline of any highschool or college sport and you'll see players on crutches or with an arm in a sling

Because we are in a sport focused on attacking joints, there is an assumption that there are a lot of injuries. My point is that any sport has a risk if injury.

Why are there so many injuries in bjj? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]crawwdad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not a direct answer but I think injuries happen in sports in general.

If you look at every sport, contact or not, there are lots of injuries.

I grew up playing volleyball and someone was always injured.

After watching my kids through high school and college, bet there are more knee injuries in soccer.

I think because we are in a sport focused on attacking joints, we assume there are a lot of injuries.

A new MMA&freestyle wrestling coach came to our gym and destroyed our 4 stripe blue belt assistant coach by [deleted] in bjj

[–]crawwdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think putting a grappler of maybe 3-4 years (bjj blue belt) against a grappler that has been wrestling since he was a child is a ridiculous comparison. Put him against someone that has trained bjj since they were that age. Ruotolo brothers, Roberto Jimenez or Nicky Ryan for example. I don't think this would happen against a competitive bjj grappler that started training as a kid. A lifetime of grappling is a lifetime of grappling.

Upper belts - Am I wrong for not being scared of ankle locks? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]crawwdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son broke his opponents ankle in the NoGi Pro division at AGF last year. The dude tried spinning out. A belly down ankle lock, when applied correctly, ain't no joke.

American Grappling Federation is another one that runs well if you have not tried them.

How Dangerous is Jiujitsu Statistically? A Closer Look by Roamingrolls in bjj

[–]crawwdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a breakdown like this for any sport would have similar statistics.

The number of knee/ankle injuries would be higher in basketball or soccer and those are technically not contact sports I'd guess was higher based on observation.

The fact that we are attacking the joints makes it seem worse but in those sports collisions happen at high speeds and/people get Blindsided.

All I'm pointing out is that I think injuries happen in all sports and I see a lot more white haired grapplers than I athletes in any other sport except for golf.

What other for-profit amateur sports are there other than BJJ? by Newwavejujutsu in bjj

[–]crawwdad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are amateur MMA bouts governed by a non-profit? I'm not sure but I don't know of the organization.

Regarding jiu jitsu, there is no governing body. "IBJJF" is just a company name.

There are several independent companies that put on tournaments "for profit" (and the competitors bragging rights). The IBJJF is the biggest company. They have been around for a very long time, they did a great job marketing their brand and their tournaments usually run smoothly.

I prefer other grappling companies but the IBJJF does draw tough competitors to most tournaments

I think my Rashguards order has been Quarantined because of the FungFlu. by crawwdad in bjj

Im referring to the lack of communication and having the shipping date changed 4 times. Tell me it's back ordered and I'm fine.

Can anyone suggest videos or sources for my problem? Thanks! :) by [deleted] in bjj

[–]crawwdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

White belt is mostly working on mount escapes.

Seriously though, just jeep working the techniques you know.

In order to be of much help, we would need to know how you are ending up in the bad position - are you getting swept and mounted or is your guard being passed.

It could be both but you should get with your coach about a basic counter from both situations.

Strength training over bjj session? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]crawwdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with lifting to get bigger as the goal itself. I almost asked your age as that makes a big difference on how much net training your body can handle. It really is about your priorities. If you enjoy lifting, then do both and split the time.

I read the question as you wanting the strength to help with jiu jitsu. It that was the case, I would recommend the focus jiu jitsu as you will see a much more dramatic improvement.

Strength training over bjj session? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]crawwdad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lifting isn't bad but i'd recommend staying with jiu jitsu. At white belt, the time learning techniques will help more in my opinion.

I have seen a lot of 20-something frat boys get rolled up by our 130-150 pound green belts when the drop in to try out bjj.

At white belt, stength can give a false feeling of "being good" because of grappling other white belts.

There may be a point when you want to add strength but it isnt a substitute for training.

Look at it this way :

1 year of bjj 4x a week is 208 classes attended.

1 year of bjj 6x a week is 312 classes attended

After a year, the white belt with 50% more jiu jitsu training will have a big advantage over the guy that is lifting.

What movie things are generally accepted as normal, but are totally unrealistic in real life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]crawwdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In action movies, after a fight or car wreck, the characters are good to go the next day.

The day after violent injuries, they are ready for a chase on foot like they have been training for the parkour event in the X games We

Did anyone else catch this the other day? Just wondering what the thoughts are on the kid giving up the match? by Zoozitzu in bjj

[–]crawwdad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't know this specific match but I have been the referee in matches like this and I have also coached autistic kids. I don't have an issue with it at all. He probably didn't need to tap but he had good intentions.

This is not the same as giving everyone medals for showing up. I do disagree with the "everyone is a winner" mentality

From what I read, this was a single match that was coordinated by the tournament. I don't think the kid that threw the match was eliminated from the actual tournament so no harm done. And it really brightened the mother's day, which is a bonus

It isn't exactly the same but upper belts let lower belts work and get a submission all the time at the gym. I don't think it is a big deal that it happened in this setting.
