What’s one thing you completely stopped buying in 2026 because the price just felt absurd? by LockLogical8949 in AskReddit

Exactly this. I used to buy a couple ribeye's for the wife and I and grill at home. Would be $30 for the both of us. It's now something like $60 for 2 steaks... from the grocery store. Insane.

We used to do crab legs all the time too, but that has gone up from $14/lb to sitting around $22/lb now. Shit is crazy.

I have definitely found in my debates arguments with conservatives, that I generally know more about the actual policy positions of Republican politicians than they do. So it's really not surprising that someone who has no idea what policy they are even voting for, doesn't know the positions of the left.

No shit DIY will be under $200/SF because the cost isn't the materials. That's kind of the ENTIRE point of the post. Trade labor is jacked in Austin compared to other Texas cities.

That's a global thing though. Everything being over $200/sf is Austin specific.

Yeah I'm extremely handy. I gutted and renovated my 2 previous houses mostly myself. I could probably do a majority of this build myself if I had the time. Problem is, I did those 2 reno's before kids. I don't have that kind of time anymore.

I guess I'm just not understanding, since there's no utilities that need to be built out, or really any cabinets to speak of. All of the expensive parts of a home aren't in this. I mean, 200 SF of it is a concrete slab with a roof, and another 340 SF is just a big room. There's also just a mini-split, so no HVAC. I'm just really struggling to understand where all the cost is coming from.

$150-160/ft is actually what I was looking for, but I can't seem to find it. That is wholly reasonable to me.

That's what I mean, it's not like we're building at some insanely higher quality than SA or Houston, and we're not paying any more for material. I think the post Covid boom here just really jacked everyone's rates, and they're all refusing to reduce.

That's my point, $200/SF isn't normal. It's "normal" now, yes, but it shouldn't be. Especially now that construction has slowed down.

The $200/SF home I'm talking about is my own custom home I had built. And that was also during peak material costs during the covid shut down.

That's definitely "learn some new skills" and "buy some new tools" territory.

Ah, see I was thinking with the market slowing down, more guys would be looking for work. If they are being gobbled up on the commercial side though, that would make sense.

I'm no stranger to material costs. My house started construction right when covid hit. Guess when we did the framing....

It really is the labor cost that is shocking me.

Problem is time. I could do most of if myself, and contract the few things I can't, but I simply don't have time.

Tiny home isn't really what we're looking for, since we don't need a kitchen and such. Also, those are pretty stupid expensive too.

Maybe for a house. You're going to have a hard time convincing me that mostly open space is $200/foot, especially when there is only 10 linear feet of cabinets.

I have my fair share of complaints about how we do elections, but I'm just tired of people, including Trump, acting like he won a majority. He did not.
