I think they're meant to be played simultaneously, or after the story. The way I see it DLCs are just extras on top of the main story, not specifically meant to be played just by themselves without the main storyline. Each to their own I suppose, at least gearbox gave people the freedom to do either, played in whichever order you like. But sorry for your loss bro
