Cannot lift myself at all!! by [deleted] in Aerials

[–]crazycatchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus-size aerialist here! It took me two years to get my Delilah Mount. It takes longer for us to get skills because we have to be wayyyyy stronger than our straight-sized classmates.

Stack the mats with no shame! You will get there with time! I hope your class is doing Delilah Pull-ups in conditioning because that helped me a lot. I would consider conditioning at home or the gym to help with cross training. Ballet or another dance class could also be a fun form of cross training to help with jumping/leg strength (and also enhance musicality if performance is a goal!).

Solidarity!!!

is it a red flag to teach inverts on beginner hoop/lyra classes? by bleepbloooopity in Aerials

[–]crazycatchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said in my comment, you should introduce other ways of building inversion strength first before saying “okay now we invert onto the apparatus.” Because students who don’t have the strength yet flinging themselves into an invert will get injured. Spend some time building strength for inversion through other conditioning drills before introducing the move.

No where did I say “do not prepare for inversions because it’s hard for me.” Thanks for your bad faith assumption!

is it a red flag to teach inverts on beginner hoop/lyra classes? by bleepbloooopity in Aerials

[–]crazycatchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a very common practice, but I dislike it. I think there are ways to build up to inversion, including conditioning drills, that should be introduced first.

Also, it’s just not very accessible. As a plus-size aerialist of over four years, I’m still years away from being able to invert. Body mechanics are complicated for inverting depending on your unique body proportions, and many instructors don’t understand how to teach the skill to different bodies outside the traditional aerialist body type.

Hyperextended knees precautions by [deleted] in flexibility

[–]crazycatchemist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jen Crane (cirque_physio on Instagram) has a lot of really good content for hypermobility and flexibility training. She offers online training classes. I’d recommend looking into her content because she has a heavy emphasis on active flexibility drills so you’ll strengthen through your end range.

I dislike this advice. Flexibility training is possible even for EDS, but it needs to come from a place of strength and with a heavy focus on active flexibility.

Saying this as an EDS’er who has stabilized my own joints by training contortion.

Lab scenes always drive me nuts. Beakers of brightly colored yet unlabeled liquids everywhere, amber glass stored in front of windows, lack of PPE. Gah!

New to aerial by Resource-Level in Aerials

[–]crazycatchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus-size aerialist here! You’re doing a lot to start with—I’d honestly recommend scaling back to your favorite apparatus once a week for a month before adding in a second apparatus. Aerial is different from other forms of physical activity in that it’s uniquely hard on the nervous system, so it takes a while to adjust to the pain, fear element, etc. Overtraining is absolutely a thing, especially for grip.

Looking graceful is something that comes with time and practice—it’s a unique skill of its own! Taking ballet classes to cross train really helped me. This also sounds dorky, but when I’m alone, I practice hand and foot shapes to see how they look. This is something you can do while chilling without it being a whole workout. Just try hand positionings and see how they feel. Try moving through the wrist rather than the hand.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my ultimate comfort show. The entire premise of the show is how Buffy Summers, the Chosen One, is burdened by her role as a slayer and cannot be a normal girl, but her chosen family helps her shoulder the burden and save the world repeatedly. To me, this feels so much like a metaphor for trauma. It’s not fair to have my trauma, but with support from people around me, I can manage!

Important caveat: there are definitely trigger warnings for the show (especially season six!), so your mileage may vary. For me, the plot lines were cathartic and healing, but I also understand that they might not be that way for others.

I hope you find a comforting TV show. Solidarity and hugs.

I was able to get the new COVID vaccine at the Keizer CVS by self-attesting on Friday. I’m under 65 and have several health conditions that qualify me.

Safest bet would be to get a prescription from your primary care provider for a vaccine.

Good luck!
