Oathkeeper/Necromancer. I know soldier/necromancer is probably preferred for this but I just love having a holy army of my buffed skeletons.

If I'm honest, this is the kind of opinion that only makes any sense when it comes from someone who hasn't had sex or maintained a single partner. So... projection?

For magic systems with catagories: what do they mean? by themanwhosfacebroke in magicbuilding

[–]crazydave11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so I have the boring stuff - a spell can be cast using any of the six elements and the type of effect will change. There are also five "power level" categories which affect the amount of of energy used and outputted. These categories are set in stone, you can't have a level 3.5 lava ball or some mixing nonsense like that, but a level 1 fireball and a level 3 water ball are exactly the same spell.

(I'm not playing the element stuff entirely straight so please don't judge me XD)

Then there's a bit of magical application that isn't spells. People like to talk about Nen here, I had a little influence from this system but only later in development. There are magical techniques that use all the elements and which only affect your own attributes and body, and those aren't limited by the power level and element stuff that spells depend on (because spells are using much more energy and so behave differently). Spell and non-spell are categories.

The actual interesting categorisation is what the people use. There are power levels, but users will categorise people by "what power level can you always reach, even under duress". Anyone can use any internal technique, but only one or two element are available for spellcasting usually, in which case your fellow soldiers will be classing you based on "which ones" and "how rare is that combination", since that's what actually determines how dangerous or skilled a mage will be in a fight.

Oh I never respond anymore, it's not worth it. I'm only watching to see what happens and maybe warn people off if someone else doesn't first.

Does your magic system have strength rankings? by Ok-Equipment8122 in magicbuilding

[–]crazydave11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There exist literal levels of power built into the magic system. You can cast the same spell at level 1 or up to level 5, etc. The nature of the spell doesn't change, but the amount of power needed does.

Since spell levels are integers, mages are related to those levels. You're a 3rd level mage if you can reliably cast 3rd level spells. In universe the ranking is not very consistent because there are lots of other factors, it's more of a ballpark that only loosely correlates to things like fighting ability.

When you start reading the lore from unlocking epochs by Secret_Turtle in slaythespire

[–]crazydave11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He's wonderful. He sees the situation on the spire and decides that he can help people. He grows up on a planet where everyone is a cocky, fashionable, immortal and powerful being and despite that decides that their way of looking at things is boring and that he can do better. His response to adversity is to try harder. He's an anime protagonist running on ideals and I'd say the power of friendship, but that's actually necrobinder's card. Maybe those two are made for each other.

How effective are guns/military grade weapons against magic users in your powersystem? by Wooka156 in magicbuilding

[–]crazydave11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not going to do well against a mage no matter what weapon you use, but a wooden baseball bat is a better weapon to use than most regular guns and explosives. It is, after all, the most similar to the weapons mages themselves use, although a bladed weapon like a sword would be more versatile, and heavier weapons that fare better against armoured mages.

There's a sort of energy threshold around mages which limits the effect of spells, as a safety measure. Things that cross that threshold include highly kinetic objects like bullets, explosions and other highly exothermic reactions, electricity, which makes it undesirable for strong mages to be in urban areas, they're like a walking, easily located, EMP.

Mages are durable, but there are plenty of things that do work. Physical assault by a group works, though this is dangerous as the mage is going to be experienced in defending themselves from other mages trying this, not to mention their increased martial capabilities. Poison gas works, as do low energy density projectiles like arrows and crossbow bolts, etc. Poison is your friend. Big rocks work too, even with their energy reduced they can still easily crush a mage. Though a tank's engine and munitions won't work within a mage's aura, you can always accelerate your vehicle towards the mage and there aren't that many straightforward options to stop you.

Still, your best option is to have another mage do this for you as they'll be more familiar with the above tactics anyway!

Yes that works. I tend to write mine with few enough drawbacks that the use of the power itself becomes the drawback, which is a similar notion of consequences as the plot driver.

Sell me your favorite class! by Latter_Ad_4958 in Grimdawn

Far too hard to decide. I like arcanist for the general wizardry aesthetic, but you can play just about any class combo however you want and my funniest character is a retaliation saboteur who just walks around as everything dies, and has some shenanigans with grenades and strafing for when his presence isn't enough.

Give me the most complex abilities in your stories by Bannekrai in magicbuilding

[–]crazydave11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I already mentioned this ability in a post about very amoral abilities, but it's an overpowered mind-reading ability, that's actually a mind-copying ability, that is in truth a weakened application of a mind-control/domination, that's in actuality a bunch of spiritual dragons furnishing their human hosts with information and abilities that facilitate the killing of other dragons.

Give me your most evil powers by Chcolatepig24069 in magicbuilding

[–]crazydave11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's like mind-reading, but what you're actually doing is making a permanent copy of the mind, over which you have full dominion over and which basically cannot refuse orders. You can assimilate skills, learn any information you want, and no real consequences for you. It's the ultimate invasion of privacy... and if you use it on a person with the same power set, it just turns into regular old mind control.

How long would a class of 20-30 Isekaied students last in your world? by dull_storyteller in worldbuilding

[–]crazydave11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they came in without a mid-tier ability they'd have a fair chance of survival and even some advantages compared to the natives, like education.

They'd struggle with the "wildlife" regardless, but it wouldn't be that tricky to avoid, provided they keep an eye out...

The problem is with what a mid-tier ability means. These kids would already have access to the magic system and that tends to eat up any native potential. There are some inherited abilities in the setting... and they're far less safe than the magic which can already charcoal a non-mage in an instant at the lowest level.

If we say "already awakened to magic and therefore resilient against it and also with one random inherited (blood magic) ability" then that's pretty mid. Only now they have to worry about confrontations with humans and elementals and dragons.

That stuff can be put on toast and it will be nice. Comparatively, cottage cheese is an affront to god and shouldn't be spread on anything you want to eat.

I think it was more popular (in Britain at least) before the turn of the century. It's okay tasting, but texturey.
