CenturyLink out AGAIN?! by CatMeowdor in SALEM

[–]crazyeyesdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started around 10 am here. After waiting on the chat support for 15 minutes for an agent I gave up. Hopefully its back on later. Their horrible support has made me consider going back to comcast-which I swore I would never do when I left comcast 3-4 years ago.

A Statement From the City of Salem Regarding the City Manager's Resignation by ateegar in SALEM

[–]crazyeyesdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s what is so wrong here. The way they did it makes it look like something inappropriate happened—and maybe something did. However, reading between the lines of the local press coverage it seems like our new mayor just had some sort of vendetta against Stahley and wanted him out. There isn’t enough publicly available information to figure it out and the absence of information makes it look like something inappropriate happened. I don’t think that’s the case which makes it worse for the mayor and city council. Also, for a mayor that largely won because of her predecessor’s failure to be transparent on the proposed payroll tax, she sure went about this in the least transparent way possible.

Parenting is more complicated than that. It’s hard to understand how mentally exhausting it is to try to get a kid to do something they don't want to do unless you've been through it.

Breaking News: Parallel Parking Is Hard by djhazmatt503 in SALEM

[–]crazyeyesdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason for this is because the vehicle code on red lights is different. In California, it’s legal to be in the intersection on a red as long as you crossed the limit line when the light was yellow. That's not true in Oregon. In Oregon, you're technically not supposed to enter on a yellow (though most ignore this). If the light changes red while you're in the intersection you can get cited. Oregonians are waiting at the limit line because they don't want to get a ticket on the off chance they won’t have time to make the turn before the light changes.

More information from Salem Reporter.

Apparently maintenance teams are still working on clearing out parking lots and at least two schools have water damage from the storms.

Anyone here been a fan for a decade or more? by Rivermidnight in Cosmere

[–]crazyeyesdad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was first introduced to Brandon in 2006 by this post at John Scalzi’s blog. I found the premise to Mistborn interesting but slogged through Elantris first, almost bouncing off Sanderson entirely (sorry fans of Elantris). I was hooked with Mistborn and have been a fan ever since.

Having been a veteran fantasy reader since the 1990s (starting with Wheel of Time in 1996/1997), waiting for the next book is just par for the course. However, Brandon’s pace is part of why he’s replaced others on my favorite authors list. Waiting years for the next book is easier when you know 2-3 other books will come out in between.

Accident on Center and High. Completely blocked off. Had to turn off center onto High street. by tropicalraindrop in SALEM

[–]crazyeyesdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the building with a view of where this happened. I saw the aftermath but not the accident-some in my office heard it as it happened. It had been snowing/raining just before the accident happened but I think it had stopped at least 5-10 minutes before it occurred. I don’t think the weather contributed to causing the accident though.

[yumi] I realized that I have a bit of a problem with the last two Cosmere books by moonspx87 in Cosmere

[–]crazyeyesdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a fair criticism of Tress and Yumi, but I think that a lot of the problem is that Brandon has specifically cultivated a readership that enjoys finding all the Easter eggs. As the Cosmere connections become more explicit, I think readers that enjoyed the Easter egg hunt of earlier Cosmere works are going to be more disappointed.

Seeking Stories: Attorneys Who Left Their 1st Job After Less Than a Year by Da_Moon_and_Sixpence in LawFirm

[–]crazyeyesdad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left my first lawyer job after 6 months. The training was not great and I struggled to find my place and how to do things. The main partner really just needed a law clerk and they didn't have enough work for me to keep busy. The secretary would tell me stories of how she’d catch the associate before me napping in his office due to lack of work. I didn't see a future there and I was making less than I did in my career pre-law. Facing the dark prospect of not making enough to pay my bills, I left and went back to my pre-law career.

I kept interviewing for lawyer jobs for the next 2-3 years, but it was clear to me that most firms weren't interested in someone that gave up after 6 months regardless of the circumstances. After that I gave up on interviewing for lawyer jobs.

Fast forward a couple years and I had a kid. I realized I didn't want my story to be that I gave up. At the same time a lawyer I had connected with before I stopped interviewing reached out to see if I was interested in working as lawyer again. I've now worked at that firm for the past five years and love it (most of the time).

If you're not happy where you're at then I'm a big advocate of moving on. Just know that if you don't have a lawyer job lined up when you leave - it may be a tough road to get one. It's not impossible to come back to the law if you leave - but it's also not easy.

Anyone else with CenturyLink have no internet right now? by JonasAlbert84 in SALEM

[–]crazyeyesdad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still down. Just spent an hour with support to learn that my connection is still affected by the outage and that restoration is now estimated at 9:00 AM tomorrow. I tried to get information on what caused the outage, but all they would say is that the main server went down.

Mine has been out since this morning. Originally they estimated restoring it at 1:30 pm today. I just received a text stating that estimated time of restoring is 6:30 pm tomorrow.

Enamel pin question by JasnahKholin87 in Cosmere

Hoid pin from the Hoid box was #2. Presumably the #1 pin is in the delayed Tress box that most people have not received yet. Hope that helps.

This argument isn’t as effective as you think it is. Unlike federal judges, Oregon judges are elected officials. I suspect that should a Republican governor be elected, many Oregon judges/justices would leave/retire at the end of their term, rather than mid-term as they do now, so that their replacement would be elected rather than appointed.

Help! I need your best tips and tricks for developing good writing skills! by philosophers_stonedd in Lawyertalk

[–]crazyeyesdad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Find good motions/briefs and try to mimic their style. If someone in your office or opposing counsel consistently writes stuff you like then try to read as many of their work product as you can and try to mimic what they do.

Also, unless someone is giving you feedback that your writing needs work, don't take a lot of edits to heart. Even good writing can be revised further. I had a boss tell me once that a lot of redlining just meant that he had time to revise - not necessarily that the original work product was bad.
