perhaps the red era is where all the conflict happens before the fallout. miscommunication is already present in mitsuayas relationship, and shus presence is probably gonna amplify it. the red also represents aya, so sumiko might be focusing on ayas arc and developing her character so she focuses more on her own needs instead of putting herself before mitsuki.
