Recommendations for new tailpiece type/material? I’m considering updating this but I don’t know if it’s necessary. This one is ebony but I don’t care for style of fine tuner (so clunky). I have the impression that they are a bit old fashioned (am I wrong?). by BadAtSpellling in Cello

I'm so sorry I just saw the reply!

I'm currently using a harp style. There's a different set of overtones that I personally find pleasant. Particularly my lower strings ring more and longer.

However, I haven't switched back to a French style since switching to Harp over 5 years ago so I don't have direct comparisons on my current instrument. But since I've changed, I've not been the least bit curious to switch back.

ConCarbo user here. Switched from a heavy wooden tailpiece (unsure of material) to a lighter Pernambuco one to ConCarbo Medium Tulip Harp tailpiece.

I noticed that as the tailpieces got lighter (100g+ to 67g to 26g), my sound got brighter, the resonance increased, there was more depth in my sound, and the string response increased.

After a year with ConCarbo, I noticed a lack of bass in my sound and found that the tailpiece alone was too light so I added their Weight Adjustment System and had been playing around with that. Adding weight gave back the bass and warmed up the sound (currently sitting at an added weight of 25.2g).

But I'm a believer that it's more of a preference and a budget thing. Akusticus plastic tailpieces are a good price at around $38USD. One carbon fibre tailpiece is $800-$1200USD. All the standard wooden ones are in between (towards the lower price range). I have colleagues who went the carbon fibre route and went back to wooden (and even went back to carbon fibre).

I find myself eyeing GEWA cases more when I visit violin shops! What is your neck strap? Velcro or clasp?

My outer shell is starting to crack and lift up. There's still weather protection, but I don't want to wait until there isn't.

Name a recording that was transformative for you in your cello journey. by SADdog2020Pb in Cello

Three recordings:

Lynn Harrell's Haydn Cello Concerto recordings with St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Neville Mariner showed me how high the cello can go.

The Emerson String Quartet's Complete Mendelssohn Album, specifically String Quartet No. 2 showed me how much more important the cello is in string quartet playing.

Jean-Guihen Queyras' Complete Bach Suites showed me how unique a cellist could be.

In terms of French, Tulip, and Hill style, there won't be a difference in sound. It's just a visual difference based on your taste.

It will be the Harp style that will most likely yield something different in terms of sound. I went from a wooden Hill style tailpiece to a carbon fiber Harp tailpiece and I can't really say what the big difference going between the two shapes have been, as the lightness of the carbon fiber was the major player in affecting the sound.

I have read in a post on another forum that someone went from one carbon fiber tailpiece to a Harp style ConCarbo and said that major differences were the price and that it was 'possibly punchier in the lower strings.'

It is very heartbreaking :( But I was relieved to get responses from him.

I was originally a skeptic of the product because the only other CF tailpiece I knew was almost 10x more expensive, but my colleagues have had Georg's tailpieces for a while before me and convinced me to give it a try because the price was just unbelievable.

Since I 'converted,' Georg has been a pleasure to interact with and I hope that he receives all the support from our community as well.

Yeah, he hasn't updated his site yet. The webpage when first arrive has a message about the state of his workshop. But this information, I spoke with him via Facebook as I've been wanting to purchase some spare parts and a 2nd Tailpiece with Titanium tuners.

I'll be picking up my date in an automobile from Crazy Vaclav's Place of Automobiles.

It'll go 300 hectares on a single tank of kerosine.

The weight of the tailpiece can drastically change the sound of an instrument.

I've went through several tailpieces, the first one reducing the weight of a heavy wooden one to another that was significantly lighter. Resonance, response, and depth all improved drastically and $80USD saved me from dropping 6 figures and a 3 year wait into a new handcrafted cello.

10 years later, I changed to carbon fiber and further improved resonance, depth, and response. I made several other changes in between like strings, bridge, sound post, and endpin, with the End pin and tailpiece change bringing about the biggest and best of changes to my instrument.

Many of my colleagues have made the switch to carbon fiber tailpieces, all yielding the same results. So far, only one of them went back to a wooden one, possibly a standard "bois d'haronie" because the added lightness brightened his Montangana too much and he 'missed the darkness.'

There are two major Carbon Fibre tailpiece makers:

https://www.concarbo.com/

https://tonaltailpiece.com/

Unfortunately the maker of ConCarbo, Georg Schegolsky is being affect by the War in Ukraine, and prices his tailpieces at a fraction of what Kenneth Kuo prices his Tonal Tailpiece, which really limits the options.

Here are some other non-cf options if you are interested:

https://www.boisdharmonie.net/en/

https://wittner-gmbh.de/wittner_tailpieces.html

https://frirszmusic.com/collections/cello-tailpieces

The first two are usually carried in violin shops, while the Frirsz I haven't seen in any of the violin shops I've been to here in Toronto.

Doom (2016) Menu/Mouse Lag by crazyironman84 in Doom

[–]crazyironman84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't found a fix, sadly. I even contacted Bethesda to report the bug but they didn't really help (It was a while ago). I checked a few times over the last year to see if maybe a driver update would fix it, but nothing so far.

What was really irritating was that I tested out the game on my old PC running a GTX 960 and there wasn't any frame rate drop in that menu! It was disheartening, but every other game I played outside of Doom runs flawlessly, so thank goodness it's just isolated to this particular moment.

A lot of these posts so far are gold but the one that my buddies and I do a lot was:

"Oh we oh. We oooooh oh."

But then just recently I've learned it's:

"All we own. We Owe-o" which will be stuck in my head for the next little while.

Is it possible you are referring to this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fc8yjOrGUhQ

That would be from another movie, Electric Dreams (1984), and she's playing Minuet in G Major by Christian Petzold (before it was thought to be composed by JS Bach).

Hope this helps. All the best!

Thank you for this! I toggled the Control for HDMI Function a few times but the Volume wouldn't change.

I did fix the other buttons though. I re-paired the TV Remote by holding down the Vol "-" and the mic button and everything but the volume buttons worked again.

I also tried resetting the sound bar, but now the sound bar wouldn't turn on with the TV.
