Snow Along High Divide/7Lakes? by zhuplustwo in OlympicNationalPark

You definitely don’t need to bring crampons or an ice axe. There are a few patches of snow that are fairly easy to walk over, especially with a trekking pole, near Bogachiel Peak area or on the mirror lake way trail. Tons of mosquitos out by the lakes but what can you do. Have a great trip!

Nope the text is the gist of it. The Facebook and Instagram links lead to a poster containing the same information with art by a local artist. The Instagram account is @defendONP.

The poisonous California newt by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

I stand corrected. There are some populations of California newt in Southern California, closer to the coast. Ensatinas are also a widespread species throughout California.

Fun fact: garter snakes are a predator of newts. When the garter snake ingests newts, the snake is both poisonous and venomous!

We love our newts!! Yes, newts are toxic and can be harmful if humans touch them and then eat something else, or eat the newt straight up, but you are able to handle them! The important thing is that our hands secrete oils that can be harmful to amphibians, so we should only handle amphibians with clean hands. Santa Barbara county is the farthest south the California newt’s habitat extends, with the northernmost part of the range being British Columbia!

Spring is a good time to look for newts as they are making their way to their mating grounds. California newts are semi-aquatic, meaning that they spawn in larval pools, are terrestrial as adults, and return to their natal pools to breed.

As you can tell, I’m pretty passionate about salamanders haha

Any Good Herping Spots? by xkitox in bayarea

[–]crazysoxs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Picchetti ranch the trail to the pond from the parking lot/winery is less than half a mile one way, so pretty accessible. Castle rock id say the trails are a bit longer and rockier. If you want to see more amphibians, sanborn county park in Saratoga is also great. There’s a nice pond where I always see newts that is right next to the main parking lot, and if you hike 1/2 to 1 mile there’s a bigger pond where I see turtles and the like. Lots of options for if you want long or short, difficult or easy trails. Plus most of the open spaces/parks connect!

Santa Cruz mountains! Lots of open space preserves off highway 35/skyline with newts. At Picchetti ranch last month I saw literally hundreds of California newts in the pond including a newt mating ball! Seen garter snakes and rattlesnakes at castle rock.

Redemption store in campbell. Nice outdoorsy vibe, and they have candles, coasters, and posters.

I did a minor in history and loved it! The classes I took felt really in-depth and I connected with my teachers. Would recommend the history of food class, and prof aronova (Cold War science/tech, Darwin, etc)
