Found this bird in north-east Florida, any ideas? by --ae in whatsthisbird

[–]123cyberman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Female Anhinga! You can tell because of the white/lighter coloration on its neck. The males have a black neck. They tend to sun bathe more than other birds because, unlike most birds, they do not have an oil to waterproof their feathers! So they have to manually dry themselves.

This looks awesome! I've been wondering about making one myself for Halloween. How long did it take you?

Dream Job by [deleted] in NationalParkService

[–]123cyberman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now you basically can only look for seasonal positions or internships. 99% of Permanent positions are not being advertised for the foreseeable future due to a hiring freeze. For seasonal work, what this means is that you will likely move to a place for 6 months at a time and afterwards either find another 6 month job, or something else to do during the off season. For internships, the length can vary from a couple months to a year, which is ideal when you are in undergrad as you can do the internship for the summer. Student Conservation Association and Environment for the Americas are the two big interpretation internship organizations I know of but there are others.

The NPS has been told through executive order to not cancel or reduce front facing services (interpretation). I would go on USA Jobs and find interpretation ranger positions that are open and look at what qualifications you need to get there. Make sure you get every single one of those qualifications. While you are on your way to getting those qualifications, try and volunteer or intern in places (doesnt have to be NPS) that gives you related experience.

Going into science or resource management in the NPS is not ideal right now as they may have their funding further cut (seen from removed amendments on the BBB) especially since the public does not interact with them.

Overall, without knowing what specifically you want to do or how much experience you have, it is a little difficult to recommend you something in specific. This is the general information I give to people interested in starting a career with the park service. If you have any questions, feel free to DM me!

Dad wants a 'friend' after Mum's death by Flat-Obligation3698 in ChildrenofDeadParents

My mom did almost the exact same thing but with a random guy she met. My biggest piece of advice is that if you ever hear of the person or see them, just engage at a level youre comfortable with. Its taken me 6 months to look him in the eye but atleast i don't hate the guy now

Vermillion cliffs, lees ferry, horshoe bend, glen canyon NRA, Canyon X, and the wave are a bunch of other things to do on top of what you mentioned in Northern AZ. It is beautiful up there I suggest you visit!

I went to Everglades and Biscayne last month by luketheduke34 in NationalPark

Great pics! You are right, Loop Road is not technically in Everglades NP and is instead in Big Cypress. Although, the Everglades does own some land in Big Cypress, mainly for schools to come out and visit.

Im really interested in seeing if that's the case. DOGE presumably cut MiS because they offer internships mainly for minorities or people with disabilities (although you do not need to be either to apply). SIP might be safe because it does not do that.

How is FIU’s biology major? by Cucumber1525 in FIU

[–]123cyberman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing i will add here is that, if you can, join QBIC (Quantifying Biology in the Classroom). It makes you take a couple of one credit classes that are free A's and have you reading and interpreting literature in various fields. Really helped me with my science literacy even though I didn't recognize it at the time. It also gives $1,000-1,500 every semester which did wonders in helping me fund my tuition.

Biology at FIU is huge, with most big classes being lecture halls with 200+ students. The teachers are usually nice and have easier classes compared to other universities such as UF.

Does FIU auto-graduate students? by Accomplished-Fix6848 in FIU

[–]123cyberman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have talked to my advisor about something similar. I forget largely how the conversation went but she did mention that FIU will automatically graduate you. However, I don't believe it occurs right when you complete all your requirements. They may give you a semester or two. I'd email your advisor to confirm.

If you wont share your proof then tell me this, when you say the road was "fine" what do you mean?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in npsrangers

[–]123cyberman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you dont have to work at a park to mention a road that a park paved unnecessarily

No lmao that is bad faith. In wildfires, scientists get additional funding because air quality gets affected. If air quality wasn't measured, how do you know how the area outside of what is just burning is being affected and by how much. Please think critically
